I HOLDER FOR SPITTOONS. NO. 286,113. I Patented 005. "Z, 1883.
INVENTOR,
W29 i m 31mm By h flltarneya k V I l u FETERS. Phmum n m Wnhinglon. 04c,
' UNITED STATES PATENT FFTCEQ \VILLIAM E. BURK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIG'NOR TO THE S. S. VHITE DENTAL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
HOLDER FOR splrroons.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,113,
Application filed April To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM: E. Bonn, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Spit toons, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to holders adapted more particularly for holding the spittoons at taclied to dentists chairs, which require to le frequently removed to emptytheir contents and be replaced.
My object is to provide a holder for a spittoon or other device requiring to be frequently removed and replaced in position, which is easily operated for the removal of the spittoon or other thing, or for its replacement in the holder, and which, while held by the holder, is secure from accidental displacement or re lease. The subjectmatter claimed is particularly pointed out at the close of the specification.
The accompanying drawings show my improvements as embodied in the best way now 2 5 known to me. Some of my improvements may be used without the others, and in holders not, as a whole, identical with that hcrein= after particularly described.
In said drawings, Figurelis a view inelcva- 0 tion of my improved holder, showing the upper end or neck of a spittoon as encompassed by the arms of the holder, and showing the holder also as connected to its support by a pivotal connection, which permits the holder 3 5 to turn horizontally upon said support. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the im proved holder on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3 with the locking-slide drawn out a little more than half-way, as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted 40 plan, showing the locking-slide as drawn out at its fullest extent, as will be the case with a comparatively small-nccked spittoon and Fig. 4 is atransvcrse section through the device on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, the lockingslide in this view being in the position shown in Figs. 1
and 2.
Ashcll or hollow frame, A, is provided with ears or lugs a a, to the under side preferably of which are pivoted the inner ends of curved 5o arms 18 B. The inner sides of the said ends dated October 2, 1883.
12, 1883. (No model.)
of the arms B B are perfera-bly cammed or beveled off,to be acted upon by a locking device, wedge, or slide, 0, while the extreme inner ends of said arms extend beyond their pivotal connections and are bent outwardly, so as to form finger-pieces I) I), by which to operate or move said arms on their pivotal connections to bend the arms when tholocking slide or device offers no obstructions to such movements.
A quadrant or curved lockin g device or slide O in. this examplcis pivoted at one'end to the frame or shell A, which is preferably hollow,as before stated, so as to inclose said looking device. The edges of said device or slide are tapered or wedge-shaped, while the slide terminates at its outer or lower end in an en largement, c, which affords a convenient projection or handle by which to operate said slide. The slide is so fitted to turn about its pivot as to cause its wedge or inclined edges to act upon the inner sides of the inner ends of the pivoted arms, and,by forcing said inner ends outward, rock the outer ends of the arms together or toward each other, so as to securely hold within the embrace of the curved portions 7 5 of the arms any object which theyencireleas, for instance, the contracted neck of a spit toon-as shown in Fig.1. By drawing or moving the free end of the slide or wedge downwardly the curved arms will be locked by the wedging action of the slide, while by moving said slide upwardly, or, in this instance, folding it back within its frame or casing, the inner ends of the arms 13 B will be released, which action will permit the said arms to be 8 5 readily swung orrocked apart to release the obj eet which they hold, or to permit its replacement. The loeking-slideis limited in its downward or looking movement in this instance by the bringing together of the outer ends of the arms 13 B, which occurs when the extreme upper enlarged end of the slide 0 is between the inner ends or short portions of said arms. Of course the movement of the slide is not so great when the article between the arms B B is quite 9 5 large, and prevents the arms coming together at their outer ends. Thisslide or looking device may be a plain slide, and not a curved or quadrant-shaped pivoted one, by a suitable modification of the frame A and of the slide IOO or Wedge, while still preserving its wedging action to secure the arms in their closed position when desired.
My improved holder, as will be readily seen,
i is very simple, and, at the same, secure and capable of ready manipulation, and, furthermore, is adapted to receive and hold objects of different size. WVhen attached to a dentists chair, my improved holder will preferably be connected to the chair by what is tantamount to a universal joint, so as to permit the spittoon to maintain a horizontal position, notwithstanding the various adjustments and angles of inclination which may be given to the chair while the dentist is operating.
In this example the frame A is connected by a horizontal pivotal connection, D, with a vertical pivotal connection, E, which has its seat in a socketed arm or bracket, F, attached to the dentists chair in any of the usual ways, or in any preferred manner.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the frame, the horizontal arms pivoted to said frame, and a vertical endwise-movable Wedge or locking device acting on said arms by passing down between them to lock the arms when closed upon the article to be held, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the pivoted arms, the hollow frame to which said arms are pivoted, and the endwisemovable quadrant lockingslide pivoted within said frame, and working between the inner ends of said arms to lock said armsfwhen closed upon the article to be held, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 9th day of April, A. D. 1883.
