FIRE-KINDLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,103, dated October 2, 1883. Application filed June 30, 1883. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be-it known that we, LORENZO D. 0. Wool), of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, and TrroMAs B. DORRELL, of
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Kindlers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a view in perspective of a firekindling package embodying the invention,
with its wrapper partly broken away; and
2 5 Fig. 2, a perspective view of a piece of perforated cork coated or impregnated with resin or other hydrocarbon or highly-inflammable substance, and forming what we term the lighter of the package.
0 A is a paper bag or boX,which both constitutes the wrapper of the package and is acomponent part of the fire-kindler. It is preferred to make the package of rectangular form to facilitate piling up and storing away, and
with the one end of its wrapper open for insertion of the contents and exposure of the same in part, a cemented strap, 1), or other suitable fastener, serving in such case to prevent the contents from dropping out of the 0 wrapper. This paper bag or boxAis packed or nearly filled with short pieces, BB, of kindling-wood, which may either be of one and the same kind or different kinds, and upon the top of the wood-or it may be otherwise arranged 4 5 in the package, if desired-is placed ahighly-, combustible fire-lighter. This lighter we make of a piece of cork, O, grooved, slotted, or perforated, as at c, to induce draft and facilitate its ignition and to render such lighter more highly combustible we coat or impregnate the same with resin or other hydrocarbon.
The paper wrapper and its contents constitute a cheap, convenient, and efficient firekindler in compact package form, and makes a new article of manufacture, trade, or commerce, each package consisting of 'sufficient material to light a single fire.
To use the article, the paper bag or box A is first torn from the wood and put in the stove or grate. Then the prepared cork or lighter O is put upon the paper, and after this the wood B is inserted on top of the paper and per a fire is very quickly obtained, and nothing of the original package is wasted or left as objectionable refuse. Such package, too, does away with dirt in handling the wood while in its paper wrapper, thus making it a neat and clean article to handle and the whole package a most rapid fire-kindler.
\Ve are aware that cork, both in a solid form and as shavings, impregnated with a resinous or other hydrocarbon substance has before been used as a fire-lighter; also, that kindlingwood having perforations in it to promote draft and dipped in melted resin has also been usedfor the same purpose; but we prefer to use perforated prepared cork as a lighter, substantially as hereinbefore described, although we may use any other inflammablyprepared lighter or igniter in its place.
XVe are also aware that'wood has been used in a combustible wrapper as a kindler; also, that wood and fine coal in a combustible wrapper have been used; but
What we claim as new and of our invention 1s A kindler consisting of a perforated cork block, O, impregnated with hydrocarbon, the wood kindling B, and a combustible boX, A, as shown and described.
