CRYPT FASTENERS FOR KEYING TOGETHER CRYPT FRONT SLABS John B. Sinner and Oscar A. Sinner, San Diego, Calif. Application April 9, 1957, Serial No. 651,701 1 Claim. (Cl. 72-19) means of a single substantially invisible key member ex- A tending through a ledge member on the fastener, the key member being readily accessible and removable out of the ledge member upwardly whereby'to unfasten the slabs, all to the end of simplifying such fasteners and reducing the cost of manufacture thereof.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereiuafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of our improved crypt fastener applied to a crypt;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view in vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged view in horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an exploded view in perspective of the fastener with the key member eliminated; and
Figure 5 is an exploded view in perspective of the ledge member and the key member removed out of the ledge member.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the numerals 1 and 2 designate vertically aligned upper and lower pairs of front cover slabs having contiguous corners adapted to be fastened to the front wall 3 of a crypt to cover casket compartments 4, all as is usual and well understood in the art.
According to our present invention, an elongated fiat key bar member 7 is provided for securing the contiguous corners of the pairs of slabs 1, 2 together and the key member fits in a pair of horizontal elongated slots 9 in the bottom edges and contiguous corners of the upper pair and in a similar pair of slots 11 in the contiguous corners and upper edges of the lower pair 2. The key member 7 is fitted downwardly in and extends through a longitudinal slot 13 in a horizontal ledge member 15 fitted between the contiguous corners of the pairs of slabs 1, 2 and which supports the contiguous corners of the upper pairs of slabs 1 and as in our copending application, supra, extends forwardly from a vertical base flange 16 having longitudinal edge tongues 17 slidably fitting in a longitudinal dovetail slot 19 in a track 21 on the front and lower portion of a hanger plate 23, and whereby the ledge member 15 is horizontally slidable in the track 21 to center said member 15 relative to the contiguous corners of the pairs of slabs 1, 2. V-shaped springs 25 on the track 21 in the rear 2,860,504 iatented Nov. 18, 1958 of the corners of the slabs 1, 2 urge said slabs outwardly against the key member.
The hanger plate 23 is vertically adjustably secured to the crypt front wall 3 as in our U. S. Patent No. 602,299 dated November 13, 1951, by horizontally spaced anchor bushings 27 embedded in said wall and which are cross connected, as at 29, and have embedded front end flanges 31 and are provided with studs 35 extending through vertical slots 37 in said plate 23 and provided with pairs of front and rear plate clamping nuts 39 thereon, the rear nuts fitting in vertical grooves 33 in said plate 23.
The key member 7 is undercut at its ends to provide longitudinal shoulders 41 thereon overlying the ends of the slot 13 and seating on the ledge member 15, whereby the key member is substantially T-shaped and is suspended on the ledge member 15 to project above and below the same into the slots 9, 11 respectively. As best shown in Figure 1 in dotted lines, the bottom slots 9 in the upper pair of slabs 1 are of at least the same depth as the width of the key member 7 and the key member 7 fits endwise in the slots 9, 11.
To unfasten the slabs 1, 2, the key member 7 is lifted into the slots 9 of the upper pair of slabs 1 above and clear of the ledge member 15 as by a tool inserted under said member 7 between the lower pair of slabs 2, thus freeing both pairs of slabs 1, 2 from being keyed to the ledge member so that both pairs of slabs 1, 2 may be removed and the key member 7 may drop out of the slots 9 in the upper pair when the latter are removed. In fastening the slabs, the key member 7 is first inserted through the slot 13 and into the slot 11 in the lower pair of slabs 1 and then the upper pair 3 are positioned on the ledge member with the slots 9 thereof slid over the key member.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
In a crypt including a wall and upper and lower pairs of closure slabs opposed to said wall with lower confronting corners of the upper pair and upper confronting corners of the lower pair contiguous and provided with slots therein, a horizontal elongated ledge fixed to said wall between said lower and upper corners and having a slot therein, and an elongated flat fastener key member extending downwardly through the slot in the ledge and projecting above and below the same into the slots in the lower corners of the upper pair of slabs and into the slots in the upper corners of the lower pair of slabs, said key member having undercut notched ends seating on said ledge at the ends of the slot in said ledge to suspend said key member on said ledge, the slots in the upper pair of slabs being of a depth corresponding to the width of said key member whereby said key member is displaceable out of the slotin said ledge upwardly into the slots in the upper pair of slabs to thereby unfasten said slabs.
