3 claims. (Cl. 101-380) This invention relates to rubberstamps or printing devices, wherein a plurality of characterized type members are supported upon a suitable mounting. More particularly, the invention ldeals with a structure of this type and kind, wherein a casing is preferably yieldably supported or includes a cushion support upon the mountting and a rod frame is detachable with the casing, the frame including rods supporting a plurality of type members in predetermined spaced relationship in the frame and said casing with the characters of the type members protruding beyond end limits of the casing.
Still more particularly, the invention deals with a structure of the character described, wherein the type members include air cushioning portions, compensating for llexure of the rubber of the type members when subjected to pressure in the use thereof.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
Fig. l is a plan view of a stamp device made according to my invention, with a diagrammatic arrangement of type members therein.
Fig. 2 is a partial section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l on an enlarged scale; and
Fig. 3 is a partial section on the line 33 of Fig. l on an enlarged scale, with part of the construction broken away.
In Figs. l to 3, inclusive, I have shown a stamp device, wherein 6 represents a block or mounting, to which is secured a rubber or synthetic rubber backing 7 and cernented or otherwise secured to the backing 7 is a casing 8. The casing 8 has similar side walls 9, 10 and outwardly flexing end walls 11 and 12, including longitudinally spaced bearing beads 13.
The walls of the casing 8 define a chamber 14, in which is arranged a rod frame 15 for supporting characterized type members, as later described. The frame 15 has a bottom wall 16 and end walls 17, upper or outer end portions of which are curved in the direction of the walls 11 and 12, as seen at 18, note Fig. 2. The walls 17 include slots or sockets 19 for reception and support of rods 20, the rounded ends 20' of the rods being adapted to seat in the bearing beads 13 of the walls 11 and 12 in retainingthe rods 20, including the frame 15 against displacement from the casing 8.
Supported on the rods 20 and detachable with respect thereto are characterized type members 21. A diagrammatic arrangement of the type members is outlined in Fig. l of the drawing. However, the characterizations of these members are omitted for simplicity in the showing. In the present structure, only three rods are shown. However, with different types and kinds of stamp devices, one or more of the rods can be employed, depending upon the size of the resulting stamp device to be produced.

In Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, the characterized portions of the type members 21 are indicated at 21 and it will be noted that these are disposed beyond end limits of the casing 8. The type members 21 have apertures 22 for reception of the rods 20. However, in forming the apertures 22, they are fashioned to include upwardly and laterally diverging relief portions or spaces 23, which are divided by a central web 24, as clearly noted in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The web 24 directly engages the upper edge of the rod, so that pressure upon the type in the use of the stamp device can be taken up directly by the rod and, at the same time, this pressure is cushioned by the air pockets formed by the diverging portions 23 of the aperture 22.
As diagrammatically seen in Fig. l of the drawing, the members 21 are in a predetermined grouping and spacing on the respective rods in the production of a predetermined stamp device. In assemblage of the members 21 on the respective rods, suitable spacers or spacer sleeves 25 are provided between the members 21 and the members 21 and e'nd walls 17 of the frame 15. Part of one of the members 25 is broken away in Fig. 3 of the drawing in order to more clearly portray one of the slots or sockets 19.
In the use of the device, it will be apparent that either one of the flexible end walls 11 or 12 can be flexed out'l wardly by the use of a knife or blade in order to free the rounded end 20 of one of the rods, which will permit removal of any one rod from the casing. On the other hand, the entire end wall 11, 12 can be flexed outwardly so as to simultaneously remove the rod frame 15 supporting the several rods 20, after which, the rods can be readily detached from the frame and the type members 21 changed to produce a new stamp device. This operation can also be performed whenever it is desired to clean the type or the device as a whole.
It will be noted, from a consideration of Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, that the inner surfaces of the members 21 are arranged in close proximity to the bottom 16 of the frame 15. When the device is in use and pressure is applied to the members 21 in forming an imprint on any desired surface, it will be apparent that the entire casing 8 will yieldably move upon the backing 7 and, by virtue of the relief portions, as at 23, the material of the rubber type is free to flex into the spaces formed by the relief portions to support and maintain the characters 21' in a common alinement, so as to insure a substantially perfect imprint upon the surface being printed. This structure further compensates for slight variances which prevail in the moulding or construction of the type members 21, so that, if any slight irregularities normally prevail between outer exposed surfaces of the characters 21, these variances will automatically be compensated for by virtue of displacement of the rubber of each member in the spaces 23 which are provided for this purpose.
This application constitutes a continuation-impart of my prior application Serial Number 570,885 filed March 12, 1956.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A rubber stamp device of the character described, comprising a mounting, a yieldable backing on said mounting, a casing secured to said backing, the casing have side walls and outwardly yieldable end walls defning, within the casing, a chamber, a rod frame arranged in the chamber of the casing, means retaining said frame against displacement from the casing, the frame including spaced rods, type members mounted on said rods and disposed within the chamber of said casing, said type members including outer type characters arranged beyond end limits of the casing, and means, on saidk rods, for spacing the type members in producing a predetermined characterized stamp Within the chamber of said casing.
2. A rubber stamp deviceof the character described, comprising a mounting,- a yieldable backing on said mounting, a casing securedfto-sa-idbacking, the casing having side walls and outwardly yieldable end walls defining, withinthe casing, a chamber, a rod frame arranged in the chamber of the casi-ng, means retaining said frame against displacement from thecasing, the frame including spaced rods, type members mounted on said rods and disposed Within the chamber of said casing, said type members including outer type' characters arranged beyond end limits ofthe casing, and means, on said rods, for spacing the type members Vin producing a predeten minedl characterized stamp -Within the chamber of said casing, said type members including relief portions adjacent said rods facilitating compression of the type members in the use thereof.
3. In stamp devices` of the character described, employing a casing, a rod frame detachable with respect to said casing, said frame comprising a bottom Wall, upstanding end walls having rod` receiving and supporting sockets, rods mounted in the sockets of said frame and protruding beyond said end walls thereof, means, on the casing, engaging the rod ends for supporting the frame against displacement from said casing, type members having rod receiving apertures for detachably mounting the same on the rods of said frame, and said type members including relief chambers adjacent the rods and extending from said apertures to compensate for compression of the material of the type members in the use thereof.
