Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE LEACH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PULL-COCK.
Specification of Letters PatentrNo. 28,588, dated June 5, 1860.
To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE LEAGH, of
vthe city and State of New York, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Pull-Cocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specication, wherein- Figure l, is a side elevation of my said cock. Fig. 2 is an end view, and Fig. 3 is a cross section at the barrel of the cock.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
My said invention relates to cocks for use with pull pumps for beer, and ale, and for soda water fountains or for tea or coffee urns, &c., where a horizontal pipe unites with a vertical pipe or bib, and a barrel and ornamental pull form the cock at the union of said pipes. In the cocks of this general character, difficulty has been experie enced in uniting the handle to the plug of the cock so as to be strong and durable, and at the same time allow of the parts being easily detached for grinding in the plug of the cock.
The nature of my said invention consists in attaching the handle or pull to the plug of the cock by means of a follower acting on the spring that draws the conical plug'into place, so that the handle and pull is firmly united with the plug of the cock, and the appearance of the parts is uniform on both sides.
In the drawing a, is the pipe connected to the pump or source of supply for the liquid; b, is the bib or spout, and c, is the handle of the cock, these parts may be shaped and ornamented in any desired manner; Z is the plug of the cock turned and ound in as usual, but instead of boring two holes at right angles and intersecting each other, I make use of a quarter circle cavity l, in the side of said plug to form the water way as seen in Fig. 3. At one end of the plug CZ, I form a square 2, seen by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the ornamental end or screw 3, connects the handle or pull c, at this point. The other end of the handle or pull c, has a circular hole through the same as at 4, which allows the aforesaid end to be placed over the square 2, after the plug is in place in the cock; and through said hole (-4) the spring 5, is entered, and the follower 6, placed within said hole 4, surrounds the square at this end of the plug and takes the screw 7 which acts to compress the spring 5 by pressing on said follower, and a set screw 8, through the handle or pull at the eye or hole 4, enters a groove in this follower 6. It will now be evident that this follower 6, not only prevents the turning of the cock from loosening the screw 7, but it also fills up the hole 4, and through the screw 8, affords a firm and durable connection to the plug at this end so that the handle or pull acts at both ends in turning said plug and thus prevents injury to the handle as often occurs where rigidly connected only at one end of the plug.
The appearance of the cock is uniform and handsome and the action of the spring 5, in keeping the cock tight is not obstructed.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the follower 6, spring 5, and screw 7 in connection with the handle or pull c, and` its screw 8, for the purposes and as set forth,
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this twentieth day of April GEORGE LEACH. Witnesses:
LEMUEL WV. SERRELL, CRAs. H. SMITH.
