SAMUEL COWAN ATTORNEYS United States Patent HANDBAG WITHREMOVABLE SUIT SUPPORT Samuel Cowan, Philadelphia, Pa., assignor to Samuel Cowan & Sons, Philadelphia, Pa., a partnership Application February 27, 1957, Serial No. 642,687
Claims. (Cl. 223-89) This invention relates to a hand bag with a removable mens suit support.
It is the practice today that when a passenger boards a plane he may carry with him only a personal size bag which cannot exceed a predetermined size and weight. The primary object of this invention is to provide such a light-weight, personal size hand bag which will permit one to-carry a mans suit in the hand bag in such a way that the suit is retained in a neatly folded position in the bag and which can be readily removed from the bag and neatly hung as such.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hand bag of the character described employing a novel foldable suit support which approximates the dimensions of one of the bag compartments so that the bag will not exceed the size permitted for personal carriage in a plane.
Another object of the invention is to provide a personal size, light-weight hand bag of the character described in which the suit support combines a foldable platform, a hanger with pivoted hook over which a suit is draped and a means to detachably connect the hanger to the platform so that the platform and suit can be folded as a unit to neatly occupy the space of one of the bag compartments.
These and other objects of the invention will become more apparent as the following description proceeds in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the bag in a closed position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bag in its open position and with a suit foldably supported therein;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing removal of the suit and its support;
Fig. 4 is a group discerpted perspective view of the suit and suit support;
Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary enlarged group perspective view of the means detachably connecting the hanger to the suit support;
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 showing the hanger attached to the suit support;
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the suit attached to its support;
Figs. 9-12 are diagrammatic views illustrating the manner of folding the suit and suit support; and
Fig. 13 is a sectional view taken on the line 13--13 of Fig. 2.
Specific reference is now made to the drawings in which similar reference characters are used for corresponding elements throughout.
The invention comprises a conventional hand bag 10 which is comprised of two hinged sections 12 and 14, one of which carries a handle 16. Each section constitutes a compartment and the bag is provided with the usual hardware 13 for closing the same. The hand bag is of the personal size and by this is meant the size which cannot be exceeded when one desires to carry the bag with him in an airplane.
the shoulder line of a suit. The platform includes an upper panel section 26, an intermediate panel section 28 and a lower panel section 30. The upper and intermediate panel sections are connected by a bendable strip 32, preferably of leather which is sewn to the panel sections as shown; andthe intermediate and lower panel sections are interconnected by a similar bendable strip 34. The arrangement of the bendable strips 32 and 34 is such that the platform is provided with longitudinally spaced pairs of laterally extending fold lines 36 (see Fig. 4).
A wire hanger 38 is provided over which a suit and a pair of trousers are draped in a conventional manner;
Centrally of the hanger and at the top thereof there is pivoted as at 46 a suspension hook 48, the latter being movable in a plane generally parallel to that of the hanger.
Adjacent the apex of the platform 22 there is secured as at St a generally U-shaped keeper 52 having a web portion 54, leg portions 56 and lips 58 which extend generally parallel to the web and which are secured as at 50 to the platform. The upper leg portion 56 of the keeper includes slots 60 which open through the sides thereof.
The intermediate panel section 28 includes short straps 62 with female snaps 64 thereon which are adapted to engage male snaps 66 mounted on the upper panel section 26.
In use, the suit 67 and trousers are suspended on the hanger 38 and the legs 42 of the C-shaped lug 40 are slipped through the slots 60 of the keeper 52. The C-shaped lug 40 is then rotated or pivoted to assume the downward position shown in Fig. 7. In this way the suit is detachably secured to the platform and the hook 48 assumes the downward position. The bottom of the suit is then folded upwardly with the bottom panel section 30, as shown in Fig. 10 and the upper part of .the suit is folded downwardly with the upper panel section 26 as shown in Fig. 11. The snaps 64 on the straps 62 are then made to engage the snaps 66 on the panel section 26 so that the suit is neatly held in a compressed folded position, whereupon the platform, suit and hanger are inserted as a unit in the luggage compartment 12 there to be held in place by conventional long straps 68.
The length and width of the platform 22 is such that it is substantially coextensive with the suit itself and only somewhat narrower than the width of the luggage compartment 12. In this way, the folded suit fits neatly but snugly into the hand bag and the latter can be of a personal size which will permit one to carry the bag with him on an airplane. It will also be seen that the platform, suit and hanger can be readily removed as a unit from the bag and the suit and hanger can be easily removed from the platform support for suspension by the hook'48.
I claim:
1. A foldable mans suit support adapted to be p0- sitioned in a hand bag comprising an elongated relatively stiff platform including two laterally extending, longitudinally spaced fold lines dividing the platform into upper, intermediate and lower panels, the upper edge of said upper panel being tapered to follow the shoulder The lug 40 has spaced extensions 44 thereon between which is 3 line of a suit, and a generally triangular hanger having tapered shoulder support portions and a cross bar, means removably attaching said hanger to said upper panel whereby theshoulder support portions of said hanger are positioned adjacent the tapered portions of said upper panel, the trousers of a mans suit being adapted to be,
draped on the cross bar of said hanger and the suit itself being adapted to be draped over said platform whereby the platform and suit may be folded to provide three closely adjacent compact suit portions each backed by one of said platform panels.
2. The article of claim 1 wherein said intermediate panel includes straps extending laterally from opposite side edges thereof and means removably securing said straps to said upper panel when said platform and suit are in the folded position.
3. The article of claim 2 wherein said lateral fold lines are formed by a bendable material connecting the lower lateral edge of said upper panel to the upper lateral edge of said intermediate panel and a further bendable material connecting the lower lateral edge of said intermediate panel to the upper lateral edge of said lower panel.
4. The article of claim 1 wherein said hanger includes a suspension hook pivoted to the apex thereof, said hook being movable in a plane generally parallel to that of the hanger.
5. A foldable suit support adapted to be positioned in a hand bag comprising an elongated relatively stifi platform including two laterally extending, longitudinally spaced fold lines dividing the platform into upper, intermediate and lower panels, the upper edge of said upper panel being tapered to follow the shoulder line of a suit, whereby the suit is adapted to be draped over said platform and folded therewith to provide three closely adjacent compact suit portions each backed by one of said platform panels, straps extending laterally from opposite side edges of said intermediate panel and means removably securing said straps to said upper panel when the suit and platform are in the folded position.
