3 Claims. (Cl. 120--44) This invention relates to a color-applying tool which is particularly adapted for use in applying relatively expensive pigment colors such, for example, as gold and silver pigment colors, to any desired surface such, for example, as ceramic surfaces, and the like.
An object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved color applying tool which is particularly adapted for use in applying relatively expensive or precious metal pigment colors such, for example, as gold and silver pigment colors, to ceramic and other surfaces.
A further object of the invention is to provide a new and improved color applying tool which is especially adapted for use in applying precious metal pigment colors to ceramic and other surfaces and which may be readily manually adjusted and set to control the width of the stripe, lettering, artistic design, or other configuration applied thereby to a ceramic or other surface.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a color applying tool which, while being particularly adapted for applying precious meta1 pigment colors such, for eaxmple, as gold and silver pigment colors, to ceramic and like surfaces, may also be employed for forming stripes, lettering, artistic designs, and various other configurations on ceramic and other surfaces with various colors including precious metal pigment colors and other less expensive pigment colors.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.

A typical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, of the drawings, where it is generally indicated at 10, and includes a container or storage receptacle for so-called color or coloring material. The container 11 is shown as having the form of a glass bottle 11 which includes a reduced neck portion 12 which is externally threaded as at 13. The form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, of the invention includes a coupling member 14 which has a central frustoconical-shaped central passage 15 formed therein. The upper portion of this central passage 15 is internally threaded, as shown (Figs. 2 and 3), and is adapted to have the reduced externally threaded neck portion 1213 of the storage container or reservoir 11 detachably threaded thereinto, as shown in Fig. 2. The coupling member 14 may have one or more finger grip portions or bosses 43v formed thereon on its external surface to facilitate gripping and handling of the tool.
The form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, also includes a generally frusto-conical clamping member 16 which has a lower end portion 17 of reduced diameter which provides an internally threaded clamping jaw 18, best shown in Fig. 3. This clamping member 16 is adapted to be arranged in nested relationship in the lower end portion of the central passage 15 in the coupling member 14, as shown in Fig. 3. A gasket 19, which is provided with a central opening 20, is arranged above the clamping member 16 and between the latter and the lower end wall of the reduced neck portion 12 of the storage container or reservoir 11.
The present invention also includes a tubular writing pen instrument 21 which includes a tubular barrel portion 22 having a bifurcated lower end portion 23 providing a pair of externally threaded writing pen jaws 24 which are normally separated under the force of their own innate resiliency so as to provide a central passage or slot 25 therebetween. The lower end portions of these externally threaded writing pen jaws 24 are bent inwardly toward each other to provide a pair of writing point elements 26. The tubular writing pen instrument 21 also has an upper end portion which provides a handle element 27.
The coupling member 14 has a boss 28 formed on the outer wall thereof and a guide member 29 is swingingly mounted in this boss member 28 and has a right-angularly projecting guide arm 30. A set screw 31 is adjustably mounted in the boss 28 and is adapted to grip the guide member 29 so that the arm 30 thereof may be employed to guide the color-applying tool over a fiat form of work, as indicated at 32, in one use of the new color-applying tool, as shown in Fig. l.
In the use of the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, of the drawings the parts may be assembled by inserting the clamping member 16 in nested relationship in the central passage 15 in the coupling member 14, laying the gasket 19 in position on the upper end wall of the clamping member 16, inserting the tubular writing pen instrument 21 through the central opening 20 in the gasket 19 and down through the central passage in the clamping member 16 and with the externally threaded pen jaws 24 thereof threadedly engaged, as at 18, with the clamping jaw 18 of the clamping member 16, whereupon the writing pen instrument 21 may be manipulated until the writing point elements 26 thereof are properly spaced for whatever lettering, striping, or other work it may be desired to do therewith. A suitable quantity of a pigment color may then be poured into the storage container or bottle 11 whereupon the storage container or bottle 11 may be positioned in an upright and generally vertical position and the coupling member 14, clamping member 16, gasket 19 and writing pen instrument 21 assembled therewith by threadedly engaging the externally threaded neck portion 12 13 of the bottle 11 in the upper internally threaded portion of the central passage 15 of the coupling member 14.
When the parts are arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 2 the pigment color will flow by gravity from the storage container or bottle 11 down through the central opening 20 in the gasket 19 into the upper portion of the central passage in the clamping member '16 and then downwardly'through the latter and through the slot 25 between the writing pen jaws 17 and thence by gravity down between the inwardly converging lower end portrons or writing point elements 26 onto the surface of the work 32 which is to be providedwith the lettering striping, a design, or the like.
It will be noted, in this connection, that the central opening 20 in the gasket 19 is sufiiciently large to allow the coloring material to flow by gravity from the storage container 11 down through the central opening 20in the gasket member 19 and thence into the frusto-conically shaped upper-end portion of the clamping member 16 and downwardly through the clamping jaw 18 of the latter into the slot 25 in the tubular writing pen instrument 21, and thence downwardly into the space between the writing point elements 26 of the tubular writing pen instrument 21.
It will also be noted that the tubular writing pen instrument 21, being externally threaded, as at 24, throughout its lower end portion, is adjustably threaded into threaded engagement with the internally threaded clamping jaw 18 of the clamping member 16 so that before the start of the striping, lettering, or like operation, the tubular writing pen instrument 21 may be suitably adjusted in and with reference to the internally threaded clamping jaw 18 of the clamping member 16 to control the width of the slot 25 between the writing pen jaws 24 and the space be tween the converging lower end portions 26 of the same so as to control the width of the lines to be formed by the new tool in lettering, writing, forming designs, or the like, on the work 32.
A modification of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 of the drawings. In this form of the invention the working parts 14, 16, 19 and 21 which are embodied in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, are also employed but the storage container or bottle 11 is replaced by a small storage container or receptacle unit which is especially adapted for use with precious metal pigment colors such, for example, as gold and silver pigment colors. To this end an auxiliary coupling member or adapter 33 is provided and this auxiliary coupling member or adapter 33 is externally threaded, as at 34, and has a centrally arranged passage 35 formed in its lower end portion and which merges into an internally threaded upper central passage 36 formed in the auxiliary coupling member or adapter 33. An annular external fiange or shoulder 37 is provided on the upper end portion of the auxiliary coupling member or adapter 33.
The form of the invention illustrated in Figs. to 7, inclusive, also includes a relatively small storage container or receptacle 38 for precious metal pigment colors, such as gold and silver metal pigment colors, and this storage container 38 has a frusto-conical shaped upper end portion 39 and an externally threaded reduced lower end portion 40 which has a central passage 41 formed therein communicating with the interior 42 of the frusto-conical shaped upper end portion 39.
In the use of the form of the invention illustrated in Figs 5 to 7, inclusive, the auxiliary coupling member or adapter 33 may be threaded into the main coupling member 14 by means of the external threads 34 thereon. The relatively small storage container or receptacle 38 may then be detachably attached to the auxiliary coupling member or adapter 33 by threading the externally threaded lower end portion 40 thereof into threaded engagement with the internally threaded central passage or bore 36 in the auxiliary coupling member or adapter 33 so as to complete the assembly of the parts in the manner shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings.
In the use of the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 to 7, inclusive, of the drawings the tubular writing pen instrument 21, gasket 19, clamping member 16, and coupling member 14 are all assembled in the same manner as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, in the use of the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, and when all of theparts are so arranged a suitable quantity of a precious metal pigment color may be inserted into the frusto-conical shaped upper storage portion 3942 of the storage member or receptable 38. The precious metal pigment color will then flow by gravity down through the central passage 41 of the storage receptacle 38, thence through the central passage 36-35 in the auxiliary coupling member or adapter 33, thence through the central opening 20 in the gasket 19, thence through the central passage 15 in the clamping member 16 and the clamping jaw 18 thereof, thence through the slot 25 in the tubular writing pen instrument 21 and between the externally threaded writing pen jaws 24-24 thereof, and thence down between the inwardly converging lower end portions or writing point elements 260i the writing pen instrument 21 onto the work which may be a ceramic bottle 44 (Fig. 5) or a ceramic dish 45 (Fig. 6) or other ceramic article on which it may be desired to form letters, striping, anartistic design, or the like.
It will be understood, in this connection, that in the use of the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 of the drawings the tubular writing pen instrument 21 may be manually adjusted in the clamping member 16, by grasping its handle portion 27, so as to adjust the space between the writing pen elements or points 26 to any desired width which it may be desired to employ in forming letters, stripes, artistic desigus, or the like, on a ceramic object, such as 44 or 45, or other object, and to facilitate such use the handle portion 27 of the tubular writing pen instrument 21 projects upwardly through and above the storage receptacle or container 38--39, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
It must be seen from the foregoing description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, that the present invention provides a new and improved color-applying tool having the desirable advantages and characteristics, and accomplishing its intended objects, including those hereinbefore pointed out, and others which are inherent in the invention.
1 claim:
1. A color applying tool comprising a hollow clamping member having an internally enlarged upper portion and an internally reduced-size lower portion of tapered internal diameter, a restriction member having an opening therethrough mounted on the end of said upper portion, a storage receptacle for color having an open lower end portion, means detachably mounting said receptacle on said clamping member with said open end portion in communication with the interior of said upper portion above said restriction member and in tight sealing engagement with solid portions of said restriction member, and an elongated pen member having a bifurcated lower end portion affording a pair of spaced pen jaws, said pen member being mounted in said clamping member and extending through said opening in said restriction member, said pen jaws projecting outwardly through said reduced portion in engagement therewith with said pen member threadedly engaged with the tapered internal diameter of said clamping member for moving said jaws inwardly and outwardly through said reduced end portion in engagement therewith to thereby move said jaws toward and away from each other, said internal taper at its widest portion being of greater width than the width of said pen member mounted thereon enabling coloring material to flow down through the resultant space between said pen member and said widest portion and into the space between said pen jaws, and said pen member being imperforate above said bifurcated end portion and above said restriction member.

A color applying tool comprising a one-piece clamping member having a hollow upper portion and a hollow lower portion, the latter portion having an internal area of gradual diminishing internal taper form, said lower portion in its tapered area being internally threaded and terminating in an open lower end which is the most narrow of the tapered area, a generally tubular shaped storage receptacle for fluid coloring material and having an open lower end portion, means detachably joining the lower end portion of said receptacle to the upper portion of said clamping member with the hollow interior of said receptacle in communication with the hollow upper portion of said clamping member, an elongated pen member aligned axially with said clamping member and having an elongated handle member adapted to be grasped to rotate the pen, said pen having a pair of innately resilient spaced jaw members extending through the lower open end of said clamping member, said jaws being threaded externally and being threadedly mounted in the lower portion of said clamping member so that by rotating said pen member the internal taper of said clamping member will force the jaw members closer together or will allow the jaw members to separate more depending upon the direction of rotation, and said lower portion of said clamping member being so tapered as to have an upper section wider than the width of the pen member to thereby provide clearance space between the exterior surface of said pen member and the opposed internal tapered surface of said lower portion of said clamping member enabling coloring material in said receptacle to flow by gravity down through said clearance space and into the space between the jaw members of said pen members.

A tool according to claim 2 wherein the means detachably joining the clamping member to the receptacle is a sleeve-shaped coupler threadedly connected to said receptacle, wherein the interior surface of said coupler and the exterior surface of the clamping member are complementally tapered with the clamping member nested within said coupler, wherein a gasket is interposed between opposed ends of said clamping member and said receptacle, and wherein the handle of said pen projects through a central opening in said gasket.
