KNITTING THREADJH0LDER Filed Aug. 29, 1955 Fig/ IN V EN TOR.
I M a. w
ATTORNEY STEPHEN D. HIRSCHMAN United States Patent 2,855,164 KNITTING THREAD HOLDER Stephen D. Hirschman, Bronx, N. 31., assignor to Royal Crest Yarns, Inc., Woodside, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application August 29, 1955, Serial No. 531,108 1 Claim. (Cl. 242--l5) This invention relates to a holder for knitting, and more particularly, to a holder of the character indicated, in which a plurality of strands may be united during the course of the knitting operation.
It is frequently desirable for a housewife or other individual who engages in manual knitting or crocheting to unite, as by twisting, a plurality of strands during the knitting or crocheting operation to produce an attractive pattern. Thus, the united strands may be of different color, different material, and/or different diameter. It is desirable to have such strands united so that the twist of one strand about another is evenly spaced.
This invention has as an object the provision of an improved holder of the character indicated wherein a plurality of strands may be united during the course of the knitting or crocheting operation, with the twisting of one strand upon the other being substantially uniform.
This invention has as another object the provision of a holder of the character indicated in which uncoiling of the component strands is avoided.
This invention has as a further object the provision of a holder of the character indicated in which the feeding of the component strands prior to uniting may be closely controlled.
This invention has as a still further object the provision of a holder of the character indicated in which the holder is simple and may be readily manipulated and carried about.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention there is shown in the drawings a form which is presently preferred; it being understood, however, that this invention is not limited to the precise arrangements and instrumentalities shown.
Figure l is a perspective view of the holder of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical central section view through the holder of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary length of twisted strands prepared in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the holder of the present invention. Such holder comprises a transparent cylindrical container 12, preferably made of transparent plastic, such as celluloid or the like. The upper end 14 of container 12 is open, permitting access to the spool of strand material designated 16.
Spool 16 includes an open-ended tubular core 18 having an annular flange 20 at its lowermost end. The strand 22 which may be of cloth, metal, or the like and which may comprise a plurality of filaments is wound upon openended tubular core 18.
An attractive product may be obtained when strand 22 comprises a thin metallic strand having an attractive lustrous or high sheen color, which contrasts with the strand 24 of a ball of yarn, which strand 24 may be passed through tubular core 18. A particularly striking contrast is achieved if the strand 22 has a significantly different diameter, such as an appreciably smaller diameter than strand 24, as shown in the accompanying draw- The bottom end of container 12 is turned inwardly to provide a seat 28 on which annular flange 20 is seated.
When spool 16 is operatively disposed within container 12, the clearance between the inner surface of the wall of container 12 and the strand material on spool 16 is relatively small; thus, preventing the uncoiling of such strand material, and permitting the inner wall of container 12 to serve as a guide.
In use and in operation a ball of yarn is retained within a yarn holder and strand 24 is passed upwardly through the bore of open-ended tubular core 18, and the strand 22 which is carried on core 18 is Wrapped about strand 24.
Inasmuch as core 18 is retained in stationary position, the strand 22 will be wrapped helically around the strand 24. Since core 18 is circular in cross-section, and the winding of strand 22 about core 18 is likewise generally circular in cross-section, the helical winding of strand 22 upon strand 24 will be of substantially uniform pit-ch. Moreover, since as above-noted the clearance between the inner wall of container 12 and the wound strand 22 on core 18 is relatively small, such clearance will serve as a guide and permit even and closely controlled winding of strand 22 upon strand 24.
Container 12 is transparent permitting the aforesaid operation to be followed by the user.
The incorporation of strand 22 upon strand 24 pro duces a variety of attractive and desirable effects on the finished fabric, whether the fabric is a knitted, crocheted or a woven one.
The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof and, accordingly, reference should be made to the appended claim, rather than to the foregoing specification as indicating the scope of the invention.
I claim:
A yarn dispenser for use in conjunction with a package of yarn including a cylindrical container of substantially uniform circular cross-section, said container being formed of transparent flexible plastic, inwardly projecting retention means at one end of said container comprising the inwardly looped edge of said one end, the other end of said container being open and having a free edge, the circular cross-section of said other ends free edge conforming to the circular cross-section of the container, a hollow tubular core of circular cross-section entirely disposed within said container, said core having a radially projecting flange at one end thereof, the flange of said core being carried on the containers retention means and disposed within said container intermediate the edge of said retention means and the body of the tubular core and wedged in place by flexible plastic container, a continuous strand of thin metal wound about said tubular core, the radial clearance between said strand and the inner surface of said container being sufficiently small so that when said strand extends into said clearance and projects through the open end of said container said strand is prevented from uncoiling by contact with the inner wall surface of the container, whereby upon passage of a strand from the package of yarn through the core, the strand projecting through the open end of the container may be wrapped thereabout.
