Description

Sept. 9, 1958 s. TRUAX MINE ROOF CABLE SUPPORT Filed Sept. 28. 1956 INVENTOR. erEoRa-s 6-- TEuAx United States Patent MINE ROOF CABLE SUPPORT George G. Truax, Renton, Pa.
Application September 28, 1956, Serial No. 612,712
3 Claims. (Cl. 248-339) This invention relates to support devices, and more particularly to a support device adapted to be engaged with the head portion of a mine roof bolt and to serve as a hanger for supporting a cable, water pipe, or other object from the mine roof.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved support device for use in conjunction with the head of a mine roof bolt, said support device being simple in construction, being easy to install, and providing a secure support for any object to be engaged thereon, such as a cable, a water pipe, or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved support device for use on the head of a mine roof bolt, said support device being inexpensive to manufacture, being compact in size, and requiring no special tools for the installation thereof.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a bottom perspective view of an improved support device according to the present invention, shown engaged on the head portion of a mine roof bolt in operative position.
Figure 2 is a bottom view of the structure of-Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, 11 generally designates a conventional mine roof bolt of the type having a head flange 12 and a square central stud portion 13 projecting centrally from the flange 12, defining a means adapted to be engaged by a wrench, or similar tool for inserting the roof bolt. Designated generally at 14 is a support or hanger according to the present invention, said support or hanger comprising a generally bowed strap member 15 of substantial length, having an arcuately curved end portion 16 and being formed at its opposite end with a flat lug portion 17. The front lug portion 17 is formed with a square aperture 18 adapted to receive the square stud portion 13 of the head of a roof bolt 11, as shown in Figures 1, 2. and 3, being identical in shape with the stud 13 and being slightly larger than said stud.
The strap member 15 is formed adjacent the aperture lug 17 with an outwardly struck finger 19 which is somewhat arcuately curved, as shown in Figure 3, and which extends adjacent the inner edge of the aperture 18, as is clearly shown in Figure 3. Thus, the end of the projection 19 is adapted to engage against the flat side of the stud member 13 and to be supported thereby against outward flexure.
Designated at 20 is a flat wedge member which is engaged between the projection 19 and the side of the stud member 13, in the manner shown in Figures 2 and 3, the wedge member serving to wedgingly fasten the support device 14 to the stud member 13. Thus, the wedge member 20 may be driven inwardly into wedging position by means of a hammer or any other simple implement to firmly lock the hanger member 14 to the head of the mine roof bolt in the position shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, whereby the hanger device 14 may be employed to support a cable, such as the cable 21, or any other object, such as a water pipe, orv the like.
While a specific embodiment of an improved support device for use on the head of a mine roof bolt has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, a mine roof bolt having a head, a generally bowed strap member, a flat lug portion on one end of said strap member, said lug portion being formed with an aperture receiving the roof bolt head, an outwardly extending projection on said strap member adjacent to and extending toward said lug portion, and a wedge member engaged between said projection and the bolt head.
2. In combination, a mine roof bolt of the type having a head flange and a non-circular stud portion projecting centrally from said head flange, a generally bowed strap member, a flat lug on one end of said strap member, said lug portion being formed with a non-circular aperture interfitting with and receiving the non-circular stud portion of the bolt, an outwardly extending projection on said strap member adjacent to and extending toward said lug portion, said projection extending adjacent the edge of said aperture and being engageable with said stud portion when the stud portion is received in said aperture, and a wedge member engaged between said projection and the stud portion.
3. In combination, a mine roof bolt of the type having a head flange and a square stud portion projecting centrally from said head flange, a generally bowed strap member, a fiat lug portion on one end of said strap member, said lug portion being formed with a square aperture interfitting with and receiving the square stud portion, an outwardly extending projection on said strap member adjacent to and extending toward said lug portion, said projection extending adjacent the inner edge of said aperture and being engageable with said stud portion when the stud portion is received in the aperture, and a flat wedge member engaged between said projection and the stud portion.
