SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,739, dated September 11, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON 1?. H001), a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improved Saw-Handle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of sawhandles in which a cylindrical handle and the end of the saw-plate are clamped against an intervening support, adapted to fit the handle on one side and to receive the end of the saw- .plate 011 the opposite side, by means of a bolt hooked into a hole in the saw-plate and passing centrally through the intervening support and the handle, and threaded to receive a nut which is screwed on the bolt and against the handle.
The object of my improvement is to cause the screwing up of the clamping-nut against the handle to operate also to cause the intervening support to clamp strongly against the sides of the saw-plate, as hereinafter fully described.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a plan. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the clamping-jaws and their supportingbase separated. Fig. 3 is a plan showing a modification of my device in which the base and one clamping-jaw are in one piece. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the base shown in Fig. 3.

The operation of my device is as follows: Base-plate j is placed on the handle and jaws c and d erected on the plate, as shown. The clamping-bolt is engaged with the saw-plate and inserted between the jaws and through the base-plate and handle and nut i screwed thereon, a washer, m, preventing the nut from chafing the handle. The end of the saw-plate rests against lugs f f on each of the jaws, and as the nut is screwed up the handle is clamped against the base-plate, and the jaws, each being supported at their back edges at a point outside of theline of draft of the bolt and prevented from spreading by the base-plate, are drawn together at their front edges, thus clamping the saw on both sides and supporting the end at the same time. To change the handle from a position parallel to the sides of the saw to a position at right angles thereto, it is only necessary to loosen the nut sufficiently to raise the clamps out of the recess in the base-plate and turn the handle and baseplate.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have illustrated a inodification of my clamping device, in which only one jaw is movable, the other jaw, 0, being formed integral with the base-plate p, and unprovided with the lugs for the support of the end of the saw. The movable jaw is the same in all respects as those shown in Fig. 1, and the operation is obviously the same. For the purpose of changing the relative position of I has two hollows at right angles to each other to receive the handle, as shown in Fig. 4.
