1 Claim. (Cl. 155-166) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a kneeling stool for attachment to the legs of a chair.

The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a collapsible kneeling stool which is attachable to a chair, and which may be swung between extended and collapsed positions.

According to a novel feature of the invention, the kneeling stool is constructed and arranged for attachment to the rear legs of a foldable chair in such a manner that the stool may be swung from extended position to collapsed position whereby it may be stored or shipped with the chair in its collapsed condition.

It is desired to provide kneeling stools, in connection with chairs, in various places, such as churches and the like, and the stool construction is such as to not interfere with the use of the chair with which it is associated.

The kneeling stool construction is simple in form, and is easily and readily swingable between an extended position for operational use and a collapsed storage position.

Various changes and modifications may be made in the form of the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. The stool is described, in the form at present preferred, in connection with the accompanythe drawings wherein:

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a folding chair having the kneeling stool of the invention associated therewith, and shown in lower extendedposition;

Fig. 2 is a plan view on the line 22 of Fig. l; and

Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view of the rear legs of the chair in Fig. l with the kneeling stool in upper collapsed position at the rear of the chair legs.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the novel features of the invention will be fully described.

For purposes of disclosure, a folding chair C is shown, and is similar to the folding chair shown and described in U. S. Patent No. 2,233,749 of March 4, 1941.

Transversely spaced front legs 2 are connected by an upper part 4. Links 6 are pivotally, connected at opposite ends to the front legs 2 and to rear legs 8, as at 10 and 12 respectively. A seat 14, disposed between the transversely spaced front and rear legs, is pivotally connected thereto, at 16 and 18 respectively. The chair back is represented at 15.

The kneeling stool is represented by 20 and includes inner posts 22 which are secured to the chair rear legs 8 by clamp members 24.

Said clamp members 24 are commonly known as ganging clamps, and consist of half-parts having ends for engaging around the legs and posts. The half-parts are drawn together by screws or bolts 26, so as to clamp and connect the legs 8 and posts 22.

A U-shaped lower link member 30 has side arms 32 with inner ends thereof pivoted at 34 to lower portions of the posts 22, and outer portions pivoted at 36 to lower portions of outer posts 40. A transverse portion 38 of the lower link connects outer ends of the arms 32.

An upper U-shaped link 44 has inner ends of side portions 46 pivoted at 48 to upper portions of the inner posts. Outer ends of said side portions 46 are pivoted at 50 to upper portions of the outer posts 40. An outer end member 52 connects outer ends of the side members 46.

Brackets 54 are secured to opposite side members 46 and extend inwardly therefrom. A kneeling pad 56 is secured to said brackets, and may be formed in various ways and formed from various materials to provide the desired relatively soft pad for the knees.

From the extended position of the kneeling: stool shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the side members 32 and 46 are swung upwardly relative to the inner posts 22 so that the side members 32 and 46 and the posts 22 and 40 are in substantial parallelism with the rear legs 8 of the chair and adjacent thereto, as in Fig. 3.

In this collapsed position of the stool, it occupies very little space, and in either the collapsed or extended position thereof, the use of the chair is not interfered with.

The posts 22 and 40 will preferably be made from metal tubing, and may have cushion plugs 60 in the ends thereof. Likewise the ends of the chair legs may be provided with such plugs 60.

The clamp members 24 are such that they may be swung to various angles for connecting the posts to chair legs of various spacing.

The stool is easily and readily attached to a chair, and

.is readily and easily swung between its extended and collapsed positions. The chair may be used in the normal manner irrespective of the position of the kneeling stool.

Various changes and modifications may be made in the form of the kneeling stool, Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and it is desired to claim and secure the following by Letters Patent of the United States.

I claim:

A kneeling stool construction arranged for connection to the transversely spaced rear legs of a chair and adapted for movement between an upper collapsed position between said legs and a lower self supporting extended position rearwardly of said legs, a pair of elongated inner posts having lower ends for resting on the floor, clamp means for clamping intermediate portions of said posts to said rear legs of the chair whereby said posts are held in transversely spaced relation, lower and upper U shaped links having elongated side arms and outer transverse end portions connecting outer ends of the side arms in transversely spaced relation with the said side arms in substantially parallel and transversely spaced relation, inner ends of the side arms of the lower link being pivotally connected to corresponding lower portions of said inner posts below said clamp means, inner ends of the side arms of the upper link being pivotally connected to corresponding upper portions of said inner posts above said clamp means, a pair of outer elongated posts having lower ends for resting on the floor, pivotal connections between lower portions of said outer posts and outer portions of the side arms of the lower link and pivotal connections between upper portions of said outer posts and outer portions of the side arms of the upper link, said pivotal connections being relatively disposed to position the corresponding side arms of the lower and upper links in parallelism, and a kneeling pad secured to the upper side of the upper link.
