(Cl. 294-8728) The present invention relates to bottle carriers for conveniently carrying bottles such as milk bottles, beverage bottles, and the like.

The general object, according to the present invention, is the provision of a bottle carrier which takes up much less space and is much lighter than conventional bottle carrying baskets such as those normally used by milkmen.

The bottle carrier, according to the present invention, will be found useful by the general public for its convenience for carrying bottles of the beaded mouth type. The milkman will find it particularly serviceable for delivering a plurality of milk bottles to the consumer. Said carrier also protects the mouth of the bottles against rain, snow, dust and dirt, thereby maintaining said bottles in a more sanitary condition.

The carrier is preferably provided with means to suspend the same above floor level with the bottles suspended therefrom out of reach of animals.

' Another object, according to the present invention, the provision of a bottle carrier which provided means to positively lock the bottles in the carrier. l

The carrier, according to the present invention, may also be designed for carrying beverage bottles such as soft drink bottles or other bottles with a beaded mouth.

The invention will be more fully described in the following description and by referring to the annexed drawings in which:

Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like elements throughout, the embodiment shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 comprises a sheet metal body member forming a bottom fiat wall 11, a top wall 12, a longitudinal lateral wall 13 and end walls 14; the walls 13 and 14 join the top and bottoms walls 11 and 12 so as to define a space which opens along one longitudinal side of the body member. The bottom wall 11 projects a substantial distance from the open side of the body member and is provided with a plurality of substantially equally spaced deep recesses 15. The recesses 15 are provided with substantially parallel straight edges spaced from each other a distance substantially equal to the diameter of a standard milk bottle A taken at the mouth portion thereof, immediately underneath the bead B. Thus the milk bottles may be inserted into the recesses 15 and suspended from the bottom wall 1 of the body member 10.

In order to prevent accidental disengagement of the bottles from their recesses 15, each recess is provided with a collar member 16 which consists of a leaf spring member secured to the bottom wall 1 as by rivets 17, adjacent the longitudinal wall 14 of said body member 10. Each collar member 16 extends over the bottom wall 11 and, due to its resiliency, tends to contact the same. Each collar member 16 has a substantially circular opening 18 of such a diameter as to loosely receive the bead B of a standard milk bottle A. The outer portions 19 of the collar members 16 project slightly beyond the free edge 2!) of the bottom wall to facilitate lifting of the collar members. i

The carrier is further provided with a pivoted cover 21 which is pivotally mounted on the end walls 14 by means of rivets or the like 22 and which is adapted to cover the portion of the bottom wall 11 projecting from the open side of the body member. 4

The top wall 12. is provided with spaced transverse slots 23 for receiving the ends of a handle 24 which is retained in engagement therewith by being provided with pins 25 engaging the underface of said top wall 12. Thus the handle can take a retracted position in which its cross leg is flat against the top wall 12 so that the carrier may take up a minimum of space when not in use,

The bottle carrier just described is used as follows;

As shown in Figure 2, to insert a milk bottle A into 7 the carrier, the cover 21 is opened, a collar member '16 is lifted off the top surface of the bottom wall 11 by pulling on its projecting portion 19, and the bottle is inserted into the corresponding recess 15 such that the edges of said recess engage just underneath the bead B of the milk bottle A. The milk bottle is pushed all the way to the bottom of the recess 15 whereupon the collar member 16 engages the mouth of the bottle and, due to its resiliency, takes its original position fiat against the top face of the bottom wall 11 thereby preventing disengagement of the bottle from the carrier. When the cover 21 is closed, its free edge rests on the projecting portions 19 of the collar member 16, as clearly shown in Figure 3. Thus the bottle carrier completely encloses the top portion of the bottles suspended therein.

To remove a bottle A from the carrier, the cover 21 is opened, as shown in Figure 2, and the collar member 15 is lifted, thereby releasing the mouth portion of the bottle which is then free to be disengaged from the recess 15.

Figures 4 to 8 describe another embodiment of the bottle carrier more particularly adapted for carrying beverage bottles, such as soft drink bottles. The carrier illustrated in Figures 4 to 8, comprises a sheet metal body member 26 consisting of a flat bottom wall 27 having upwardly directed end flanges forming end walls 23 onto which is secured a top wall 29 by means of screws 29. The top wall 29 covers substantially the entire area of the bottom wall 27 and is spaced therefrom. Preferably, the centre portion of the top wall 28 is closer to the bottom wall than the outer portions thereof so that the top wall defines two side portions 36 upwardly inclined with respect to the middle portion 31.

A handle 32 having downwardly directed end portions 33 is mounted on the middle portion 31 of the top wall 28 by having said portion 33 engaging slots 34 and retained therein by means of transverse pins 35. This construction enables the handle to be retracted with the transverse portion thereof flat against the middle portion 31 of the top wall.

The body member 25 forms a housing which is open along the two longitudinal side faces thereof, as clearly shown in the drawings. The free longitudinal edges 36 of the bottom wall 27 on both sides of the carrier are provided with a plurality of spaced deep recesses 37 similar to the recesses 15 described in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive,'but'havingtheir straight parallel edges 38 closer togetheiybeing spaced a distance substantially equal to thediameter of a standard beverage bottle A taken just underneath the bead B of the mouth of such a bottle A. As is the'first embodiment, a plurality of leaf' spring collar members 39 are riveted at 40 to the bottom.27 and extend over. the top face of the bottom wall. 7 Preferably, the recesses 37 are aligned in pairs on' each side of the body carrier and: a single leaf spring forms two opposite 'collar members, each associated with a pair of recesses 37.
