SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,123, dated August 28, 1883.

'To these ends my invention consists of the 0 parts and combination of devices substantially as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to thea'nnexed drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved sorghumevaporator. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section on line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line y 51 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar section-on line Z Z of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a cross-sectionon line 2 z of Fig. 2. 1

In the accompanying drawings, A rmarks the furnace, having grates a, door a, and adapted to permit my improved sorghum- 5 evaporator, with its accompanying mechanism, to rest upon its walls and form the top .thereof.
B represents the boiler, placed upon a castmetal frame, 0, which latter in turn rests on the walls of the furnace at its rear end. The
" boiler is provided with a number of pipes, 1), depending from its bottom into the space in the frame 0, said pipes having their lower ends closed and arranged alternately in parallel lines, as clearly shown, so as to interfere with and arrest the currents of heat and cause them to act upon the saccharine liquid in the pipes and boiler. The boiler hasa spout, b, to allow the liquidto pass therefrom into the first of a number of sections into which the '60 evaporating-pan D is, by partitions d, longitudinally divided. With the exception of the. last section, which is subdivided by the partitione into two parts, termed the sirup-compartments, each section is provided with a group or set of flues, E, passing through the pan and extending forward into the smokebox F, to which they are-connected by an ordinary expansion-joint to allow for the expansion and contraction of said pipes. The rear end of the pan D rests on the bottom of the frame 0, while its forward end rests on the plate G, arranged on the walls of the furnace. The smoke-box is provided with the ordinary smoke-exit, f,- a pair of doors, f, at its front to permit the fluesto beeleaned, a slidingdamper, f in its bottom to allow the smoke, &c., to pass from the fire-box directly into the smoke-box, and a sliding registerdamper, f arranged out of contact with the fines E, so as to imperfectly arrest the draft when said damper is drawn out. \Vith the exception of the doors f, the foregoing parts are particularly set forth in the patent granted to me July 18, 1882, and numbered 261,325.
Between the flues in the sections of the evaporating'pan D, and at the partitions d, the bottom of said evaporating-pan is .crimped, as clearly shown at H, Fig. 3, to increase the amount of heating-surface, and thus facilitate the evaporation of the saccharine liquid contained in the pan. These crimps H are not extended the length of the pan to meet the front and rear walls thereof, but before reaching thesame are beveled or tapered off, so as to meet the bottom of the pan at its point of juncture with said front and rear walls, as is clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. This construction is provided to prevent the burning out of the front and rear walls at the points Where otherwise the crimps would meet said walls; and, further, to permit the free flow of liquid in the sections, and from one section to another,in the manner to be presently set forth.
The liquid passes from the boiler B by means of the spout b intothe first section of the pan D, and has free flow therein from one side of the crimp H, between the fiues E, to the other by reason of the beveling or tapering of the crimp, as described, and thence passes into the second section through the triangular opening or gate h, walled in by the crimp H at that point, the partition d, and the front wall of the pan. It will be noticed that the evaporating-pan is out of contact'with the boiler B, and that the intervening space is covered by a top plate, J of the frame 0. The space between this top plate andthe bottom of the frame 0 is divided into a number of sections or spaces by means ofpartitions j, corresponding in number andin line with the partitions (1 of the evaporating-pan D. The space jf immediately back of the sirup-compartments, is entirely inclosed to provide a dead-airspace to protect the rear wall of the sirup-'eompartments against the strong heat, and thereby prevent any burning or discoloration of the sirup in said compartments. The other sections have openings L in the bottom of the frame, communicating with the fire-space-of the furnace, said openings being ordinarily closed by the individual pivoted dampers K, arranged one in each section. .VVhen, after a sufficient quantity of saccharine liquid has beendischarged from theboiler into the evaporatingpan, the former may be removed from the frame 0, the operator first taking theprecaution to close the dampers 0. Upon the removal of the boiler the dampers K,or one or more of them, are opened with the aid of a'hook engaging with the eye j and held in iavertical plane by reason of the projection or rest j se sections of the frame 0, when the products of combustion pass from the furnace through the openings L in the bottom of said frame 0, and
