Application September 5, 1956, Serial No. 608,054
1 Claim. (Cl. 2--49) My invention relates to an improvement in childrens bibs, especially bibs for new-born infants, and provides a construction in which I eliminate entirely the necessity for employing tapes, ribbons, pins, and the like, for fastening the bib inplace.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bib in which the neck opening is readily enlarged, so as to adapt the bib to infants of varying sizes and also to permit continued use of the bib as the child grows.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a bib in which the babys clothing as well as the mothers is protected against soiling when the baby is being fed and when the baby is being burped by holding the baby over the mothers shoulder.
My improved construction also provides means for preventing spilling of the babys food while the baby is being fed and for preventing spilling should the baby vomit while being burped.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bib having a readily detachable neckpiece whereby any number of bibs may be used with the one neckpiece, enabling the mother to employ bibs of various colors and patterns to harmonize with the babys clothing.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown in elevation a bib embodying my improved construction.
Referring to the drawing in detail,
2 designates the body of the bib. This may be made of any suitable fabric, such as terrycloth, for instance. Adjacent its bottom I provide the bib with an open pocket 4, extending transversely of the bib. The upper end of the body portion 2 is cut out, as shown at 6, to provide one half of the neck portion of the bib. In forming the neck portion 6, the material of the bib is shaped to provide extensions or flaps 8, which are left for attachment of the neckpiece 10. This piece 10, it will be understood, is placed around the back of the babys neck when the bib is in use.
The neckpiece is removably attached to the extensions 8 of the body 2 of the bib by snap fasteners 12 and 14. I prefer to employ at least a pair of fasteners 12 and a pair of fasteners 14, as this permits enlarging of the neck opening as the baby grows. It is within the purview of this invention, of course, to increase the number of fasteners employed, should that be found desirable.
The bib is backed with a moisture-proof or moistureabsorbent material 16, which is fastened at the top to the flaps 8 of the bib body 2 with snap fasteners 18.
2,835,895 i atented May 27, 1958 v the bib is draped over the mothers shoulder With the backing 16 immediately over the mothers clothing. Should the baby vomit or drool while being burped, the mothers clothes will be protected against soiling, thereby avoiding the necessity and annoyance of draping a towel, diaper, or other article over the shoulder before placing the baby in burping position.
It will be seen from the foregoing that my invention provides a bib which is novel and useful in its construction. It is to be understood that changes may be made therein without, however, departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
As an article of manufacture, a babys bib comprising, in combination, a bib body member the upper end of which is shaped to provide an upwardly projecting flap at each side of the bib; an intermediate concaved area which is adapted to conform to the front portion of a babys neck, said flaps projecting upwardly beyond the lower end of said concaved area; a neckpiece for the bib shaped to conform to the back of the babys neck; a snap fastener element fixedly secured to the front face of each of said flaps; a plurality of snap fastener elements fixedly secured to the ends of said neckpiece and disposed in aligned relation lengthwise of the neckpiece, said last-named snap fastener elements being selectively engageable with the first-mentioned snap fastener elements for attaching the neckpiece to the bib body member, to provide a neck opening capable of being varied in size; a moistureabsorbent, protective backing for the bib body member, the upper end of said backing conforming to the shape of the upper end of said body member; a snap fastener element fixedly secured to the two upper corners of the said protective backing; and cooperating snap fastener elements secured to the rear face of each of said flaps of the body member to provide for removably attaching the said backing to said body member with the upper end of the body member and of the backing in register with each other.
