VCURRY-COIVIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,338, dated July 31, 1883. Application ined April 14, 1883. 11101161.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. W. MA- GRUDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tennallytown, District of Columbia,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry-Combs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- 1o pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a. plan'view; Fig. 2, a sectional view.
My invention relates to currycombs; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth, whereby a curry-comb of simple construction is produced, having the requisite qualities of dura- 2o bility and strength, and possessing the further advantage of being easily cleaned and repaired when found necessary.
In curry-combs of the ordinary and wellknown form, the several rows of teeth consist 25 of as many plates of metal formed with serrated edges and provided with a hanged edge, through `which pass rivets for fastening the plates to the back or base plate of the comb;
hence when oneA or more of the said serrated 3o plates become bent -or broken, the comb becomes unserviceable on account of the difficulty of straightening the plates. In my improvement the toothed plates are removable and replaceable at will, being secured to the 35 back plate of the comb by sliding the iianges on their lower edges into suitable channels formed upon the back plate of the comb, said plate being held in position by means of a pivoted bar provided with asuitable retaining 4o device at its free end, said bar being adapted to be swung around outof position when the plates are to be removed fromthe comb.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A
represents the back plate forming the base of the comb, and B the usual handle secured to 45 the same.
C C C represent a number of plates or strips of metal'securcd to the plate A by rivets or other suitable fastenings. These plates C are set crosswise of the plate A, and are of such 5o length as to leave a narrow space between their ends and the side edges of the plate A, and upon this space is secured at one side the stationary crossipiece D and at the other the pivoted cross-piece E. The plates C are placed 5 5 a distance apart just sucient to permit the toothed plates E F to fit between these laterally-extending iianges f f on the lower edge of the latter, fitting into grooves c c on the edges of plates C C, and serving to retain said 6o plates E F in position. The toothed plates l are held securely in position by means of the pivoted cross-piece E, which lies against the ends of the plates C and closes the ends of the slots between them, a thumb-screw, G, in 6 5 the plate A, or a spring-catch of any desired form, being employed to hold the pivoted crosspiece in position.
lVhen it is desired to remove the plates F, to clean, straighten, or replace them, it is only 7o necessary to loosen the screw G from engagement with the cross-piece E, swing the latter around from in front of the grooves, and draw out the toothed plates.
HavingA described my inventionI claim* In a curry-comb, the combination, with the back or base A, having the hanged plates C C, of the detachable tooth-plates F, arranged to slide lengthwise of the channels c, and adapted for separate and independent removal and re- 8o placement, the pivoted bar E, and suitable fastening device, G, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE C. W. MAGRUDER. Witnesses:
