This inventionrelates generally. to attachments :fortfiller cans: and-=is more particularly;- concerned with av novel nozzle" assembly; including-valve means for preventin g loss of'li'quid whena filler can such-as a brake fluid can, for example, is-inverted; and including'm'eans" for actuating the valve means'of the novel assembly.when an end portion of the'nozzle' assembly; is'inserte'd into a filler aperture-into which the liquid'is to be poured.
A further'object' of invention in conformance with that set forth above is'to'provide a'nozzle assembly of the characterset forth including'means 'for retaining the .valve means of the novel assembly in resiliently urged sealing relationship: in the nozzle assembly for preventing..a'ccidental loss of liquid from the filler'can as wel'la's'preventing loss through evaporation, for example.
Another object (if-invention in conformance with. that set forth above is-to-provideanozzle assembly'of the character-set forth which is readily and economicallyrnanufa'ctured, easilyused, and highly practical and'efiicient for the'purpose intended;
These together with other objects-and advantages which will become subsequently'apparent reside in the details of construction and operation asmore fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being h ad"to the-accom-' panying drawing forminga part hereof,.wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughoutandinzwhich:'

Referring to the drawings, the fragmentary portion of a filler can is indicated generally at 10, said filler can incorporating an upper end portion 12 which includes an annular threaded outlet portion 14.
The novel nozzle assembly is indicated generally at 16 and includes a tubular nozzle or body member 18 having secured at its one end by means of welds 20, for example, an annular cap element 22 which is internally threaded at 24 for disposition on portion 14 of the filler can. The cap element 22 includes a central apertured portion 26 which is in communication with the internal bore portion 28 of the nozzle member 18. The intersec tion of the aperture portion 26 and the internal bore portion 28 constitutes a valve seat portion of the nozzle assembly. Disposed within the cap element 22 adjacent the inner surface portion 39 thereof is a sealing washer element 32 which is sealingly engaged by a lateral annular flange portion 34 of portion 14 of the filler can, the said washer element having a central aperture portion 36 constituting a continuation of the valve seat portion previ- 2,822,832 7 V Patented Feb. 11, 1958 ice 2 ously mentioned; said: valve seat portions being se g y engagedby a tapered'ivalve element 38 whichis centrally apertured at 40 for a purpose to subsequently bede scribed Therva'lvez'element 38 may-be comprised of any suitable material, such as rubber, cork, or plastic, the same being indicated asz'beirig ijarubberz material in the drawing.

The capielementa includes an annular flange portlon 58 extending beyondithe inner periphery of the nozzle member 18iproviding;:a:lateral abutment about the aperturedzportiorit26r. Extending from an intermediate portion of theactuating rod 42', see-Figure 3, is alaterally extending abutm'entwasher or element 62 being secured tliereona in any suitablermanner, said abutments' 58- and 62wconstituting;longitudinally spaced laterally extending abutment elements, and circumposed on the actuating rod: 42' is; a: oompressidnispring element: 64? The I fragmentary portion of a: hydraulic brakemaster cylinder is indicated at 66, saida'fr'agment'aryportion including the usual-filler apertureportion 6S, and when it: is desired to replenishxthesupply ofiibrakefluiiion example, in said master cylinder the end148-of the;nozzle' member 18' is inserted therein, and continued: downward move?- ment: as: illustrated by the phantom lines in Figure: 3; results in: the=p'ortion-t56'of the actuating rod '42 engaging the upper surface portioni of1 the'mast'er cylinder whereby downward movement overcomes the pressure ofa the compression) spring 641 urging the: valve element:v 38 upwardly; or retaining: it in: a: fixedposition: wherein the filler can moves downwardly whereafter the brake fluid liquid may be permitted to flow into the master cylinder, upward movement of the filler can 10 immediately results in the removal of pressure on the actuating rod 42 whereafter the compression spring 64 is again effective to prevent flow of liquid from the filler can.
Included in the end portion 48 of the nozzle member 18 is a second notch portion 72 which is of a substantially shorter length than the previously mentioned notch cutout portion 50 of the nozzle member, and when it is desired to positively seal the filler can the actuating rod 42 is rotated with the portion 52 thereof being placed in engagement with the notch 72 resulting in the valve element 38 being resiliently and positively urged into engagement with the previously mentioned valve seat portion.
Thus there has been disclosed a novel nozzle assembly which fully conforms with the objects of invention heretofore set forth.
Various positional directional terms such as upper, lower, outer, etc., are utilized herein to 'have only a relative connotation to aid in describing the device and it is not intended to require any particular orientation with respect to any external elements.
3, The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principals of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A nozzle assembly for filler cans comprising a tubular elongated nozzle member, a cap-element secured on one end of the nozzle member for mounting the nozzle member on a filler can, said cap element having a central aperture portion in communication with the interior of the nozzle member and defining at'the intersection therewith a valve seat portion, said nozzle member including at the other end a lateral cutout portion extending through a side wall portion thereof, a reciprocable valve element seated on the valve seat portion for controlling communication between the filler can and the interior of the nozzle member, a valve actuating rod secured at one end to the valve element, the other end of said actuating rod terminating in a laterally extending end portion below the outer end of the nozzle member, said lateral end portion extending through and reciprocable in the lateral cutout portion in the side wall of the nozzle member and extending beyond the outer periphery of the nozzle member, abutment means extending laterally from longitudinally spaced portions of the inner periphery ofthe nozzle member and an intermediate portion of the actuating rod, and compression spring means interposed between the abutment means for urging the valve element into sealing engagement on the valve seat portion.
2. A nozzle assembly for filler cans comprising a tubular elongated nozzle member, a cap element secured on one end of the nozzle member for mounting the nozzle member on a filler can, said cap element having a central aperture portion in communication with the interior of the nozzle member and defining at the intersection therewith a valve seat portion, said nozzle member including at the other end a lateral cutout portion extending through a side wall portion thereof, a reciprocable valve element seated on the valve seat portion for controlling communication between the filler can and the interior of the nozzle member, a valve actuating rod secured at one end to the valve element, the other end of said actuating rod terminating in a laterally extending end portion below the outer end of the nozzle member, said lateral end portion extending through and reciprocable in the lateral cutout portion in the side wall of the nozzle member and extending beyond the outer periphery of the nozzle member, abutment means extending laterally from longitudinally spaced portions of the inner periphery of the nozzle member and an intermediate portion of the actuating rod, compression spring means interposed between the abutment means for urging the valve element into sealing engagement on the valve seat portion, and a lateral notch portion extending through the side wall portion of the nozzle member for receiving the lateral end portion of the actuating rod therein, said notch portion being of a substantially lesser depth than the cutout portion.
3. A nozzle assembly for filler cans comprising a tubular elongated nozzle member, a cap element secured on one end of the nozzle member for mounting the nozzle member on a' filler can, said cap element having a central aperture portion in communication with the interior of the nozzle member and defining at the intersection therewith a valve seat portion, said nozzle member including at the other end a lateral cutout portion extending through a side wall portion thereof, a reciprocable valve element seated on the valve seat portion for controlling communication between the filler can and the interior of the nozzle member, a valve actuating rod secured at one end to the valve element, the other end of said actuating rod terminating in a laterally extending end portion below the outer end of the nozzle member, said lateral end portion extending through and reciprocable in the lateral cutout portion in the side wall of the nozzle member and extending beyond the outer periphery of the nozzle member, abutment means extending laterally from longitudinally spaced portions of the inner periphery of 'the nozzle member and an intermediate portion of the actuating rod, compression spring means interposed between the abutment means for urging the valve element into sealing engagement on the valve seat portion, and a sealing washer disposed within the cap element, said sealing washer having a central aperture portion comprising a continuation of the valve seat portion for engagement around the outer periphery of the valve element, said valve element being comprised of a resilient sealing material and having a tapered end portion extending through the valve seat portion.
