1 Claim. (Cl. 135-6) This invention relates to a shade or awning adapted for mounting on a boat.

An object of this invention is to provide a shade which may be removably mounted on a boat, being supported from the sides or gunwale or from a seat.

Another object of this invention is to provide a shade device which when applied to the boat will not interfere with fishing or the like from the rear portion of the boat.

A further object of this invention is to provide an improved supporting means for the flexible shade element and an improved mounting means for the flexible element so that the shade will not blow ofl in the event there is a relatively heavy breeze blowing.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 20 designates generally a boat which may be a power boat or the like. The boat 20 includes a side wall or gunwale 21 and in order to provide means whereby a shade element may be Supported rearwardly of the cabin 22, I have provided a 2,821,204 Patented Jan. 28, 1958 base plate 23 of elongated configuration which has secured to the opposite ends thereof inner and outer jaw members 24 and 25. A screw 26 is threaded through the jaw member 24 and is adapted to bear against the inner side of the gunwale or side wall 21 of the boat 20. A second clamping screw 27 is threaded through the jaw 25 and includes an outer head 28 having a screw operating bar 29 loosely or slidably extending therethrough. The plate or base member 23 has formed integral with the upper side thereof an upstanding lug or not member 30 which is formed with a horizontally disposed threaded opening 31. A vertically disposed post 32 is fixed relative to the base member 23 by means of a split clamp 33 through the split portions of which a clamping bolt 34 loosely extends. One side of clamp 33 bears against lug 30 with the lower edges of the split portion of clamp 33 hearing against base 23. The bolt 34 is adapted to be threaded into the opening 31 and bolt 34 includes a head 35 having a bolt operating lever 36 loosely extending therethrough. When bolt 34 is tightened clamp 33 is tightly held against lug 33 and base 23, and also tightly held against post 32. The post 32 is provided at its upper end with a disc shaped plate 37 which is formed on one side thereof with teeth 38. A second disc-shaped plate or clamping member 39 is disposed in face abutting relation to the plate 37 and is provided in its inner face with teeth 40 adapted to coact with teeth 38 in holding the plate 39 against rotation relative to plate 37. A clamping bolt 40 is extended through the two plates 37 and 39 and a wing nut 42 is threaded on the bolt 41. The plate 39 has fixed thereto an elongated tubular bar 43 which is adapted to be angularly adjusted relative to the post 32. The outer end of bar 43 is secured relative to a central casting generally indicated at 44 by means of a split clamping member 45. The clamping member 45 is tightened about the tubular member 43 by means of a clamping screw 46 which is threaded into the casting 44 and the screw 46 is formed with a head 47 having a screw operating lever or bar 48 loosely extending therethrough. The casting 44 is substantially square in plan and is formed with an inwardly offset horizontal flange 49 which forms with the plate 50 a groove or channel 51 extending about the top of the casting 44. The center of a polygonal shade member 52 which is formed of fabric or the like is secured in the channel or groove 51 by means of fastening members 53. The corners of the shade member 52 are provided with triangular reinforcing members 54 and a grommet 55 is fixed through the corners of the fabric 52 and through the reinforcing members 54. The shade member 52 is supported in extended shade forming position by means of outwardly extending rods 56 which are formed at their inner ends with eyes 57. The eyes 57 engage between pairs of ears 58 extending from a central circular body 59 which is formed on the lower side of the casting 44. The inner ends of the rods 56 are secured between the ears 58 by means of bolts or other fastening members 60. The rods 56 extend outwardly between pairs of lugs 61 which extend downwardly from the lower side of plate 50 and the rods extend radially outwardly from the central body 59 beneath each corner of plate 58. The rods 56 are yieldably held against the plate 51) by means of flat springs 62 which are secured to the lower side of plate 50 and engage beneath pairs of rods 56, as shown in Figs. 4 and 14. The outer ends of the rods 56 are formed with V-shaped books 63 which are extended through the grommets or eye members 55, as shown in Fig. 7.

In the use and operation of this shade device the clamping means including the plate 23 with the clamping jaws 24 and 25, and the clamping screws 26 and 27, are secured to the gunwale or other upright portion of the boat.
