Description

Jan. 21, 1958 v F. E. SIMMONS GARMENT'HANGER Filed Feb. 8, 1955 flarzkLE'. Simmons INVENTOR ATTORNEYS GANT one Frank E. Simmons, Bel Air, Md., assignor of forty percent to Leroy J. Hennessy and twenty-five percent to Eljay Corporation, Baltimore, Md.
Application February 8, 1955, Serial No. 4%,843
1 Claim. (Cl. 223-88) This invention relates to garment hangers and more particularly to hangers designed primarily for supporting trousers from the cut]? ends thereof.
An important object of the invention is to provide a trousers hanger embodying spring arms normally urged laterally and trousers-engaging blocks carried at the free ends of said spring arms adapted to be fitted within the cult ends of the legs of trousers to exert pressure to the cuff ends of the trousers suflicient to maintain the tousers creased.
Another object of the invention is to provide a trousers hanger which will automatically adjust itself to the width of the trousers leg in which it is positioned, thereby eliminating the necessity of manually operating screws, levers or like conventional adjusting means to adjust the hanger for use with trousers of a particular width.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a trousers hanger wherein the trousers-engaging blocks are held in proper alignment with respect to each other against lateral twisting under the weight of the trousers supported on the hanger.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational View of a trousers hanger constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hanger.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the hanger comprises a pair of identical hanger arms indicated generally by the reference character 5, the arms being arranged side by side, as better shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing.
These arms 5 are constructed of lengths of heavy semirigid wire material and are formed with loops 6 disposed intermediate their ends, the free ends of said hanger arms being extended laterally at 7 and formed into loops 8 looped around the pins 9 of the trousers-engaging blocks 10. As shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing, these pins 9 extend transversely through the recesses 11 formed in one of the supporting surfaces of the blocks 10, the recesses being of such sizes that they will permit slight pivotal movement of the blocks With respect to the arms 5.
2,82%,582 Patented Jan. 21, 1958 The reference character 12 indicates a hook which is formed with the usual shank 13, which shank is formed into a pair of lateral loops 14 which are interlocked with the loops 6, pivotally connecting the hook 12 to the hanger arms 5'. Stabilizing rods 16 are formed with right angularly extended eyes 17, so that the eye of one red accommodates the adjacent rod for a longitudinal sliding movement. The other ends of said rods are connected to the trouser-engaging blocks 10'.
Thus it will be seen that these rods 16 will not only stabilize the hanger, but will permit of sliding movement of the blocks 10 towards and away from each other when the hanger is adjusted for positioning in trousers legs of various sizes.
It might be stated that these blocks 19 may be made of any suitable material such as plastic, wherein they can be readily and inexpensively constructed to maintain the cost of the hanger at a minimum.
The outer surfaces of the blocks lid are preferably provided with a plurality of parallel grooves which tend to create friction between the trousers legs supported by the hanger and the blocks, to prevent the trousers positioned on the hanger from becoming accidentally displaced.
In order to better grip the trousers legs within the creases thereof, the outer side edges of the blocks it) taper, as better shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing.
In the use of the device, the arms 5 are pressed in wardly with the blocks 10 connected thereto, positioned within trousers legs at their cuff ends. The hanger arms are now released with the result that the outer ends of the hanger arms will expand, pressing the tapered edges of the blocks ill against the inner surfaces of the trousers legs in which they are positioned. It has been found that with this construction the hanger will tend to maintain the crease in the trousers.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A trousers hanger comprising a supporting hook, a vertical shank extending from said hook, a pair of eyes at the lower end of said shank, pairs of downwardly divergent resilient arms, an eye at the angle formed between each pair of said downwardly divergent arms and engaging through one of said first named eyes, a vertical extension depending from the outer end of each arm, pairs of horizontally ribbed blocks each having a recess in the upper edge thereof, an eye carried by the lower end of each extension engaging in a recess, means extending across said recesses and through each of said latter named eyes for securing said blocks to said extensions, each of said blocks having the end of a horizontally extending rod secured thereto, the inner ends of said rods being in overlapping relation, and loops carried by the inner end of each rod loosely engaging the adjacent rod whereby said divergent arms may flex under weight of a garment.
