4Referring l,now :mone .,particnlanly to. thedrawi-ngsj, thexie isl shown in Figure la sofa bed indicated generally' by the 2,8 18,583 `@Permed1.13m; e958 fa' r'cl 43exteidsI-longitudinallyBetweeneadh ofthe-plates ,ing mechanism best illustrated in Figure 8.
3 headed rivets 79 with coil springs Si) mounted on the shank of the pins between the plate 77 and the head thereof to thus mount the plate 77 for limited lateral movement. A coil spring 83 is connected to an outwardly vbent portion 84 of the bar 75 and a tip S1 of the member 72 thus constantly biasing the latch bar 75 to urge the dogging mechanism 76 towards the seat.74. A tubular member 52 is pivoted to the link 46 as at 51. The tubular member 52 is U-shaped, and one arm there- -of is associated with each link 46 with the web extending longitudinally and forming the outer edge of the frame of the sofa bed.
A leg 85 is pivoted to the tube 52 as at 86, and a plate 87 is welded to the leg 85 and to one end 88 of a bell bell crank 89 pivoted as at 90 to the other side of the tube 52. The crank 89 and leg S5 are thus joined for conjoint pivotal movement about the same axis. A link 92 is pivoted to the crank 89 as at 93 and to the member 46 as at 94. The free end of the crank 89 is notched as at 95. A mattress 96 is provided lying freely on the spring network (not shown) which extends from the angle 38, side channels 36, 44 and 46 and U-shaped tube 52.
Adjacent the front center of the sofa bed, when in the position shown in Figure 1, there is a further latch- A front upholstery board 61 is cut away as at 140. A bracket 141 is mounted upon the vertical flange of the angle 57 and pivotally mounts a latch lever 142, which latch lever is provided with a detent 143 for dogging connection with y the member 144 mounted on the inner side of the front y latch bar 142 towards dogging connection with the member 144. The lower end of the member 143 is bevelled as at 145 to permit the same to slip over the member 144 to engage therewith.
The operation of the above described device is as follows: Assuming the sofa bed to be in the condition shown in Figure l, the cushions 23 are removed therefrom and the bed unfolded. The first step in unfolding is to engage the latch bar 142 by the lingers of the operator and release the detent 143 from the member 144. Thereafter under the force of the springs 40 and 40a, the device will automatically move into the position shown in Figure 3. The rollers 125, being in engagement with la bar 150 riveted to the arm 36 and the link 32 as shown, ride upwardly with the movement of the bar 150 thus causing the backrest to move vertically, the slides 114 riding upwardly in the guides 123. It will be noted `that in Figure 3 the notch 35 of the crank 89 is engaged under the dogging mechanism 76 and locked upon the seat 74. Thus the outer sections of the mechanism are locked together to pivot as a unit about the pivots .66 which swing outwardly as the links 35 swing about the pivots 34.
Further swinging of the assembled unit counterclockwise about the pivot 66 causes the detent 71 to engage the inwardly extending member 78 causing the latch -bar 75 to rock laterally to permit the notch 95 of the crank 89 to be disengaged from the dogging mechanism. Such disengagement is illustrated in phantom in Figure 5.
VFurther swinging of the unit about pivots 66 causes legs 55 tol engage the floor, and thereafter the remaining 4unit is pivoted about pivots 47 until legs 54 engage the door, after which the remaining mechanism pivots about pivots 51 until legs 85 engage the oor. This further iunfolding of the unit raises the backrest to the extreme pivoted counterclockwise about pivots 51 until the notches are engaged under dogging mechanism 76 of latch 75. This locks the outer sections together, securely holding the folded mattress 96 therein. Further counterclockwise rotation of the unit about pivots 66 returns the mechanism to the position shown in Figure 2, and as the unit approaches its fully folded position the bevelled edge 145 of detent 143 passes over member 144 and latches the unit in its sofa position. Concurrently with this movement, bar is swung to the position shown in Figure 2 completely disengaging the rollers 125 and allowing the backrest to drop to its lowermost position as shown in Figure 2.
While there has been described what is at present considered a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the essence of the invention and it is intended to cover herein all such changes and modications as come within the true spirit and scope of the appended claims.
