oHARLES o. PEARSON, OF HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA.
PANTALOON GARMENT. A
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'latent No. 281,790, dated July 24, 1883.
Application filedAugust 24, 1882.
T0 all whom, it may concern.-
- Be it known that I, CHARLES CHARLEY PEARsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntsville,'in the county of Madison and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Panta- 10011 Garments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to garn enisnus'ually.
worn by gentlemen, and refers particulanly to drawers and pantalg'ons for miners and others.
The object of my invention is to promote comfort to the wearer and dufabilitytotithe garment 5 and it consists of thefi ontap d rear portions, constructed as shown.aiididescribed, and a re-enforcing s't rip all combined to form a garment, as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of drawers, show ing the location of the gathers or folds. In Fig. 2 the front is thrown open; showing the re-enforcing Strip. Fig. 3 is a back view, and Fig. 4 is a detail, showing the re-enforcing strips lapping. Fig. 5 is a view of the rear portion of a leg spread out, the dotted lines indicating the position of the notches or gathers to be formed therein. Fig. 6 is a view of the front portion of a leg spread out.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the figures.
A represents the front portion. and B the back portion, of a pair of drawers.
To provide a fullness in the cloth between the side seams and the back seam, there are two series of gathers or folds in the cloth at the points 0 don each side. For a like pur- (No model.)
up of the cloth by the gathers. By means of these gathers a close fit can be made, whileat the same time the cloth is relieved from strain at those points, which receive it to a great eX- tent in a garment that approximates a close fit.
The back seam having the gathers d is covered by a re-enforcing strip, 0, which not only strengthens the seam and cloth, but partially or wholly covers the gathers, which would otherwise be liable to chafe the wearer. The lower end of this strip laps the lower ends of the downwardly-pro ecting face-pieces of the waistband, whereby greater durability is secured.
In lieu of gathers, V-shaped notches can be cut in the cloth, and the edges brought together and suitably secured; or the cloth can be simply folded.
A garment containing my improvements can be made to give a close fit, and at the same time permit all necessary flexions of the parts with ease and comfort to the wearer, and witlr out strain or damage to the garment.
I am aware that men s drawers have heretofore been made with gathers in the front piece at the knee, and with a strip or notch cut out of the back portion at theknee, and therefore do not broadly claim such as my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a garment substantially such as herein shown and described, consisting of the front and back portions cut in the form shown, and having two series of gathers on each side seam of the back portion, two series of gathers at the knee in the front portion, and a rte-enforcing strip over the back seam, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES CH ARLEY PEARSON.
