Description

' UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE,
GEORGE NEILSON, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
PROCESSOF TREATING IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 281,784, dated July 24, 1883.
Application filed November 9, 1882. (N specimens.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE NEILsoN, of
Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Process of Treatbe exposed; and it consists in forming upon the surface of the iron a coating of the carbonate of cobalt, this carbonate of cobalt having a natural affinity for iron, and not susceptible to changes produced by chemical or 'thermic action.
To Work myinvention I proceed as follows: The iron, after being carefully selected, cleansed, and polished, is covered with a mixture of cobalt and some unctuous or fluid carbonaceous compound as a vehicle. The amount amount of vehicle required should besufli ing is applied the iron is placed in a furnace and its temperature raised to a red heat, and so maintained until the vehicle is fully carbonized and the carbonate of cobalt formed. The iron is then removed from the furnace, and, after being sufficiently cooled, is immersed in oil. It is then dried by the application of heat and subjected to a hammering or rolling 1)1O-' cess until the desired degree of polish and hardness is obtained.
I claim The above-described process, consisting of the following steps: first, preparing the sur face of the iron; second, coating the same with a compound of cobalt and a carbonaceous vehicle; third, heating the same; fourth, covering with oil; fifth, hardening the surface, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. 7 GEORGE NEILSON. Witnesses:
WILLIAM EDsoN, HELEN M. FEEGAN.
