PATENT OFFICE.
ELISHA K. GREEN, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
PIPE-GRAPPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,492, dated July Application filed April 26, 1883. (N0 odem I To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELISHA K. GREEN, of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Pipe-Grapple, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in a grapple for use in raising and lowering pump or well tubing and for other work of similar character. The grapple is made with two jaws hinged together at one end and provided with a link for their connection at the other end, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side perspective viewrof my improved grapple. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 shows the connecting-link detached. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a portion of the well-tubing or pump-pipe.
A B are the jaws of the grapple, hinged together by a pin at a. The jaw B extends beyond the hinge-pin and is provided with an eye at Z) for connection of a ring and chain.
The outer ends of the two jaws A B are slotted, and in the slot of one jaw the link 0 is permanently attached by a pin, d, and a movable pin, 6, carried by a chain, f, is provided for connecting the link to the other jaw, so as to hold the two jaws firmly together and at the same time allow of their disconnection. The two jaws are formed on their inner surfaces with concaves h, which are for the purpose of allowing couplings on the pipes to be passed through without opening the jaws. I
In using the grapple two of them are necessary, one to relieve the other while it 'is being adjusted, moved upor down, or taken off of the pipe. One is attached to the pulley-block for .hoisting or lowering the pipe, as desired. The
ways being loose on the pipe.
other is suspended by a rope or chain to some stationary post or beam, one or the other al- The grapples, as described above, are now ready for use. The pin 6 is now drawn from the one attached to the pulley-block, which allows the grapple to open, and the jaws are passed around the pipe and the pin c replaced again. The grapple is now ready for use. As soon as strain is put upon the hoisting-ropes the grapple will assume an angular position with reference to the pipe, and thus grasp the same firmly, so the tube or pipe can be raised or lowered.
The other grapple, attached to the stationary beam or post, must be applied to the pipe or tube directly under the one attached to the pulley block and in the same manner. When the pipe or tube has been raised or lowered and it is desired to move the grapple upon the pipe, the ropes are slackened, so that the grapple may assume a right-angle'position, and the coupling on the pipe or tube. (represented at g in Fig. 4,) can pass freely through concave h ofthe jaws.
In using these grapples the great danger of slipping and time consumed in tying and un-' tying ropes which are incident in the ordinary way is removed and the time saved.
' Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Apipe-g-rapple consisting of thetwo jaws A B, hinged together, and provided with the conneeting-link (l, substantially as described.
2 In a pipe-grapple, the hinged jaws A B, formed with concaves h, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
