Description

Dec.v3, 1957 A. R. suNlcH HAIR TRIMMER Filed Sept. 22, 1955 Fig. 4
United States Patent Albert R. Sunich, Muskegon, Mich.
.Application September r422, 1955,Serial No. -535,819
44Y`Claims. (Cl. 30430) YThis .invention relates ingeneralltornew and useful irnmrovements in hair ycutting devices, .and more particularly to an improved hair -cutting `device-whereby the 'user .may trim or cut his own hair.
There have ybeendevised imany types 'of "hair 'trimming devices which utilizein conjunction Ywith ,combs and razor blades to do the actual cutting of the hair. However, ltherazor blades are normally mounted rigid with respect to the support frame therefor and the comb portion thereof with the resultthat the "hair is chopped and improperly mut. It is :therefore .the.primary .objectief thislinvention to provide an improved hair trimmer wherein the blade for effecting the cutting operation is rigidly mounted by a support frame and a comb utilized in conjunction with the blade is mounted whereby the comb may give with respect to the blade in the hair cutting operation so as to effectively trim the hair.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved hair trimming device of the type which includes a razor blade, the hair trimming device including a support frame which has a recess formed in the underside thereof, there being means provided for rigidly mounting the razor blade in the recess beneath the blade, the comb being mounted for movement independent of the support frame and the blade to effect the desired cooperation between the comb and brush.
Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved hair trimmer which is of an extremely simple construction and formed of readily obtainable materials so that manufacture thereof is economically feasible.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved hair trimmer which includes a support frame having mounted therein for movement therewith a blade holder and razor blade, there also being carried by the support frame a comb to be utilized in conjunction with the blade, the comb being resiliently mounted with respect to both the support frame and the blade whereby movement of hair guided by the comb during a cutting operation is permitted.
These, together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent, reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hair trimmer which is the subject of this invention and shows the general details thereof;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan View of the cutting end of the hair trimmer and shows the general relationship of the parts thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary front elevational view of that portion of the hair trimmer shown in Figure 2 and shows further the details thereof;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary bottom plan view of the cutting portion of the hair trimmer and shows the formation of a recess in the comb for permitting access 'to the blade retaining screw;
Mice
Figure i5 l:is an enlarged transverse Vertical sectional view taken substantially upon theplaneindicat'ed'.byfthe .section line-S--S ,of Figure 3 andshows the specific relationship between the .blade yand the comb; :and
1Eigure-6 is ian .enlarged perspective -view ofrthe comb.
Referringnow `to thedrawings indetail, vit will `beffseen that there is illustrated in Figure 1 the lcomplete :hair trimmer, .whichiis the subject of this .-invention, the l'hair trimmer `being ireferred Vto in general :by "the reference numeral 10. The hair trimmer :10 iincludes anfelongated support frame which is :referred to in vgeneral by .the reference `numeral 12. The l support 2 frame '12 :includes "la rearhandle ,portion A-14 and Ya forward blade -andcomb supportportion 16. The blade and'comb support portion ,16 ais, generally=rectangular in cross-section and has `formed .in the undersidethereofa recess y18 whichri's best `illustrated uin AFigure .3. .Aligned with the recess y.18is a recess V20 formed intheleading edge of .thesupportframe Positioned within the recess .18 fand .clamped lagainst the underside of the blade and comb support ,portion 16 fis aira'zo'r Iblade yL22. The razor `blade v22 is retained in placebya blade holderf24 which is clamped against the -razor blade "22 Lby means 'of'an adjusting screw '26. `I f desired, either `the underside of the 'blade Aand comb support-portion 16 or the Aupper side of `the blade 'holder 24 may be provided with suitable projections which are received within the razor blade 22 to prevent twisting thereof.
Also seated in the recess 18 and underlying the blade holder 24 is a comb which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 28. The comb 28 includes a base 30 and projecting teeth 32. The teeth 32 cooperate with the razor blade 22 in the manner best illustrated in Figure 4 for the purpose of cutting hair.
In order that the comb 28 may be resiliently mounted within the recess 18 and at the same time guided for use in cooperation with the razor blade 22, there is provided at opposite ends of the base 30 parallel bores 34 and 36, the bores being in alignment. Formed in an extreme end part of the blade and comb support portion 16 is a pair of bores 38 which are aligned with the bores 34. Suitable bores 40 are formed in the blade and comb support portion 16 at the opposite end of the recess 18. Positioned within the bores 34 and 38 are pins 42 which are urged into the bores 34 by springs 44 mounted within the bores 38. In order to facilitate assembly of the hair trimmer 10, the bores 38 may extend entirely through the blade and comb support portion 16 and be closed at their outer ends by plugs 46.
Positioned in the bores 36 and 40 are pins 48. The pins 48 are urged within the bores 36 by springs 50 carried in the bores 40.
From the foregoing description of the mounting of the comb 28, it will be readily apparent that the comb 28 may shift longitudinally of the support frame 12 and at the same time, is retained in parallel relation with respect to the razor blade 22. Further, due to the resilient mounting of the comb 28, it will return to its normal position after each movement by the head in a cutting operation.
In order that access to the screw 22 may be obtained, there is formed in the base 30 an enlarged slot 52. This permits the replacement of the blade 22 without removing the comb 28.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
