* UNITED STATES HENRI n. OASGRAIN, or QUEBEC,
PATENT OFFICE.
PROVINCE OF QUEBEC, CANADA.
CIGARETTE-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,451, dated July 17, 1883.
Application filed January 23, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRI E. OASGRAIN, of Quebec, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented a new and Improved'Gigarette-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved machine for making cigarettes.
The invention consists in a ciga ette-machine formed of a band or apron attached to two cylinders journaled in frames hinged to each other in such a manner that the cylinders can be parted from each other, one of which cylinders is provided with a crank-handle for turning it, and the other with an internal tension-spring, whereby, if the tobacco and the paper are placed on the band or apron, which forms a loop or bight by not being entirely enrolled, and the crank-handle is turned, the paper will be rolled around the tobacco, and the cigarette will be formed. As, soon as the crankhandle is released the tension of the spring winds the band or apron on the cylinder provided with a spring, and the cigarette is made.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved cigarette-machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same, showing the manner in which a cigarette is rolled. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the spring cylinder. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of part of the band attached to the cylinder. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail end elevation of the springcylinder. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail crosssectional elevation of the same.
Two cylinders, A and B, are journaled in the end pieces, 0, of the frame D, jointed to each other in such a manner that the cylinders can move toward and from each other. The shaft B of the cylinder B is provided at one end with a crankhandle, E, and the shaft A, running through the cylinder A, is surrounded by a spiral spring, F, one end of which is attached to one end of the cylinder A, and the other end of which spring is attached to (No model.)
Each cylinder A and B is provided with a longitudinal slot, a, which increases in size toward the center of the cylinder, which slots are adapted to receive transverse end loops, J, formed on the ends of a band or apron, K, which is nearly as Wide' as the cylinders are long. A rod or wire, L, is passed through each transverse end loop, J, and then the said end loops and wires are passed into the slots of the cylinders A and B.
The operation is as follows: By separating slightly the two cylinders A and B the band K offers a bight, loop, or pocket in which the tobacco is placed parallel with the cylinders. A slight turn of the cranlehandle outward will close the machine and swallow the tobacco. The paper having been wet at one end, its dry end is then introduced between the cylinders A and B, so as to touch the tobacco. Then the frames D are pressed firmly toward each other, and the tobacco will thus be held in the bight or loop formed by the band K below the cylinders, the paper 0 projecting upward from between the cylinders. By turning the crankhandle E in the direction of the arrow at, Figs. 1 and 3, the band K will be wound from the cylinder A upon the cylinder B, and the paper 0 will be drawn downward in the direction of the arrow 12, and will be passed around the tobacco held in the loop or pocket formed by the band K, and thus the cigarette will be formed. By winding the band K on the cylinder B the spring F has been tightened, and
as soon as the handle E is released the recoil 5 IOO erably moistened or guinmed at the edges before rolling the cigarette.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 5 Patent In a cigarette-machine, the combination, with two frames hinged to each other, of cylinders journaled in the frames, and of an apron attached to the two cylinders, one of the said cylinders being provided with a crank IO for turning it, and the other being provided with a spring for rotating it, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. 7
