1 Claim. (Cl. 220-55) The present invention relates to a combination grave marker and flower holder and has for its principal object to provide a transparent or translucent grave marker and one which can contain flowers in a preserved state or semi-preserved in a special gas filled atmosphere in which flowers are known to be long-lasting and nonfading.

Many grave markers of this type have been proposed in the past and were intended to be manufactured from glass, and other materials, while none of them have been successful on the market, due in large part to the inherent breakage quality in glass and the opacity of other materials used.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a grave marker having a space within which flowers may be displayed.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a grave marker which may if desired be filled with artificial flowers in a display bouquet or wreath and the marker sealed against the admission of dampness or air. A still further object of the present invention is to provide a grave marker manufactured out of polyvinyl and polyester resins, glass fibres, and other transparent and opaque materials, and one which may have the name engraved, cast or acid-etched on the face thereof for permanent-identification.

These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the annexed drawings, in which:

Figure 2 is a view in cross section showing the details of construction of the marker and method of mounting on a base, as seen on line 2-2 of Figure 1,

Figure 3 is a detail view of the combination handhold, latch, and lock of the present invention as seen on line 33 of Figure 1,

Figure 5 is a perspective view showing how the lid of the marker is raised to take care of or replace the flowers.

Referring in more detail to the drawing, in which like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the invention will be seen to consist of a base of concrete, stone or the like having a recess 11 in the top surface thereof in which is placed the bottom 12 of the marker 13, the lower box portion or section 14 which is of substantially rectangular shape in horizontal cross section and is provided on the upper edge at each end with inwardly directed recesses 15 each having an outwardly sloping bottom wall 16 and vertical side walls 17 each substantially triangular in shape.

The lower box portion 14 of the marker is provided on its top edge 20 with a shoulder 21 on 5 which the lid 18 rests in closed condition, the lid 18 being provided at each end with inwardly formed handhold recesses 22, each having an outwardly sloping bottom wall 23 and a horizontal top wall 24, and with similarly shaped triangular side walls 25. The hand hold recesses 22 fit more or less snugly into the recesses 15 in the lower box portion of the marker and a resilient leaf spring 26 is riveted by one end to the inner wall of the lower box portion 14 to overlie the bottom wall 16 of each recess although it is normally outwardly sprung at less of an angle to the vertical than the wall 16.

The outwardly sloping wall 23 of each of the hand held recesses in the lid is provided with a hole or slot 27 into which snaps the eyelet 28 on the free end of the spring strip 26, so that the hasp of a padlock 29 may go through the eyelet to lock the lid in place. The spring strip 26 is disposed through a narrow slot in the end walls of the lower box portion of the marker and may be placed there in the manufacture of the marker so that the plastic material seals the strip in the slot in a waterproof, airtight seal. Holes 30 areprovided in the horizontal wall 24 of the hand hold recesses to provide ventilation when desired, although these may be sealed with plastic in cases of hermetically sealed markers.

Similarly, the marker may have a thermo-setting plastic on its shoulder 21, and the marker can be heat treated to seal the lid in place. Or the whole may be made of glass fibre, the lower box portion may be of glass fibre and the lid of transparent plastic as desired, and suitable sealing means employed to insure the permanence of the floral arrangement 32 within the marker.

Hinges 31 are provided on the rear wall of the lower box portion 14 of the marker and are fastened to the lid in a conventional manner using rivets or other fastener devices. It is intended that the bottom 12 of the marker may be cemented to the base 10, but other means may be employed such as downwardly directed ribs and dove tails (not shown) may be formed on the markerslower surface, and these may be sunk in the cement of the base while being manufactured.

While a single embodiment of the present invention has been here illustrated and described, other embodiments may be made and practiced and many changes and alterations in the form and construction may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is:
