1 Claim. c1. 68-270) My invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes wringers, particularly to clothes Wringers of the class including a pair of rubber rollers in interfacial contact one with the other, an object of my invention being to provide a device of the character herewithin described whereby clothes are prevented from wrapping around the wringer rollers.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described in which the wringer guards are designed to follow the movement of the rollers irrespective of the position thereof. By this is meant that the upper roller is often displaced by the entry of relatively thick articles whereby the roller is inclined to one side and, by use of this invention, the guards of the roller follow the movement thereof thereby preventing the clothing from wrapping around same.
Yet another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described in which the pair of guards are spring-loaded one with the other thereby providing undue tension upon either side of the roller and preventing clothes from wrapping around same irrespective of the direction of rotation thereof.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is simple in construction, economical in manufacture, and otherwise, well suited for the purpose for which it is designed.
With the foregoing objects in view, and such other objects and advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a fragmentary perspective view of the upper roller of a pair of wringer rollers with my device shown in an exploded representation.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of my device in the assembled position.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of my device.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
Proceeding now to describe my invention in detail, it will be seen upon reference to the accompanying drawings that I have illustrated a wringer roll I mounted upon a shaft 2 and it is to be understood that this is the upper roll of a pair of conventional rubber rolls normally used in present day wringers.
The shaft 2 is journalled for rotation within vertical supports or stiles 3 which, in this embodiment, are shown to be of Wooden construction although it Will be appreciated that, if desired, these supports may be of metal.
A mounting plate 4 is shown at each end of the roll, and which is substantially triangular in shape, and apertured as at 5 through which aperture the ends of the aforementioned shaft 2 may pass. Secured to said plate and outstanding therefrom is a parallel sided bracket 6 designed to embrace the aforementioned vertical support 3 and being secured thereto by means of screws or similar means. 7 a
H The upper cor'ner's 7 of the supporting plate 4 extend diagonally upwardly and outwardly in the form of ears 8, said ears or extensions being apertured as clearly illustrated in Figure l.
A guard for said wringer is provided comprising a pair of guard plates 9 extending between the support plates 4 and pivotally connected therebetween as will hereinafter be described one upon each side of said roll. Each guard plate takes the form of a longitudinally extending right angular bar, the lower edge 10 of the bottom flange 11 of the plate being tapered in cross-sectional configuration and being designed to bear against the perimeter 12 of the roller 1. At the ends of the upper flanges 13 of the guard plates, I have provided upstanding ears 14 being apertured as at 15 by which means the guard plates may be pivotally secured to the extensions 8 by means of bolts or rivets 16 and, it is to be understood that these guard plates are thus hingedly suspended between the pair of support plates 4 so that the aforementioned lower edges 10 are in contact with the periphery of the roller 1 as shown in Figure 1.
Means are provided coacting between the pair of guard plates which are diametrically disposed around the roller, in order to maintain the aforementioned edges 10 in close contact with the surface of the roller under all conditions and, in this embodiment, it will be observed that I have provided a further pair of apertured ears 16 extending downwardly from the upper flange 9 of the guard plates and that a relatively heavy duty coil spring 17 extends across the end of the roller 1 and between the ears 16 thus exerting inward pressure upon the guard plates 9.
In operation, the edges 10 of the guard plates 9 are maintained in contact with the periphery 12 of the roller 1 thereby preventing clothing from passing around this roller and that the spring 17 maintains this contact irrespective of any temporary displacement of the roller 1 which may occur due to relatively thick material being passed through the rollers.
Finally, in conclusion it will be observed that I have provided a single spring 17 at each end of the guards coacting between the two guards in order to hold same in contact with the roller. However, it will be appreciated that under certain conditions it may be more desirable to provide a pair of springs instead of the single spring, each spring reacting between its guard plate and the end plate 4. However, this is a feature of design in order to adapt my wringer guards for use with other types of wringers and does not alter the scope of this invention.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as hereinabove described, and many apparently widely dilferent embodiments of same made Within the spirit and scope of the claim without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a wringer having side stiles and a roll journalled at each end in said side stiles, a guard for said roll comprising a pair of right angle bars having upper and lower flanges extending lengthwise of said roll on opposite sides thereof, said upper flanges having respective upper and lower apertured ears extending from opposite faces thereof at each end of said roll, mounting plates extending across each end of said roll and having bracket means supported on said side stiles, said mounting plates having apertured extensions lying adjacent said upper apertured ears, pivot means pivotally supporting said upper ears on said extensions for hingedly suspending said angle bars from said mounting plates with the lower flanges thereof lying adjacent the periphery of said roll, and spring means extendsaid angle bars are resiliently urged toward each other into contact with the periphery of said roll on opposite sides thereof.
