SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,986, dated July 10, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LUGINDA B. J. WIsH- ARD, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dolls,

of which the following is a specification.

The object of my said invention is to pro duce a cheap and at the same time practically indestructible doll. This object is accomplished by constructing a skeleton or frame of tough wire in such a manner that the joints may be bent and rebent many times without breaking, covering said skeleton, and mounting a head thereon, as will be hereinafter more flully described.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, Figure l is a rear elevation of a skeleton constructed in accordance with my invention, the outline of the covering and head being shown by dotted lines; and Fig. 2, a'similarly-drawn side elelation.

As will be seen by an examination of said drawings, the skeleton" consists of two wires twisted andlooped together. A substantially uniform loop is formed in the middle of each wire, and said loops are extended into and support the head of the doll. Both wires are then twisted together for a short distance, 0 which twisted portion forms the neck of the skeleton. The ends of the wires are then bent outwardly, one end of each in each direction,

By reason of the knots in the skeleton at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees the limbs of the doll are easily bent at those points, and the bend being in this construction distributed over the length of the loop or coil forming the knot, instead of being confined to a single point, as when the wire is straight, the bending does not tend to break the wire in nearly the same degree in the former as in The loops also form eyes by means of which the outer portion of the doll may be securely attached to the skeleton by sewing or otherwise.

I am aware of the patent to Miller, No. 164,582, June 15, 1875, its construction and the arrangement of the various parts therein combined, and I do not broadly claim the same.

I am aware that heretofore stuffed animals, figures, and skeletons and dummies have been held in position by wire within the same.

, Having thus fully described my said invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by: Letters Patent, is

A doll consisting of a flexible body having within stiffening-wires, said wires twisted to form a loop in the head and in each hand and foot, said wires also forming knots at the shoul 7o ders and hips and a knot at each elbow and knee, said wires extending between said knots, and drawn together and twisted upon each other to form the back and neck of the same, substantially as shown and specified.
