Description

Oct. 8, 1957 w. J. BARGEN 2,808,875
' COMBINATION ONE PIECE BACK AND SEAT Filed April 21, 1955 INVEN'IQR WILLIAM JAMES DARGEN ATTORNEYS United States Patent COMBINATION ONE PIECE BACK AND SEAT William James Bargen, Waukegan, Ill. Application April 21, 1955, Serial No. 502,796
1 Claim. (Cl. 155-178) The present invention relates to articles of furniture, and more specifically, to a combination of one piece back and seat constructions molded of fiberglass or other moldable material.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an extremely light weight, strong resilient fiberglass combination one piece back and seat construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of the class described which is strengthened by a continuous peripheral flange.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character which is inexpensive to manufacture, easy to attach to a support, and durable in use.
Other objects and advantages Will become apparent ll the following specification when read in light of the attached drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the invention.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the combined seat and back.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the device.
Figure 5 is a cross-section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 4, looking in the direction of the arrows, with parts broken away.
Fig. 6 is a cross-section taken on line 6--6 of Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrows, with parts broken away.
Figure 7 is an enlarged cross-section of a securing platform taken on line 7-7 of Figure 4, looking in the direction of the arrows, with parts broken away.
Now referring in detail to the drawing in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several figures, the reference numeral 10 indicates, generally, a seat panel having a concave central portion 11 and a convex forward edge 12. A back panel 13 extends upwardly from the seat panel 10 in a generally perpendicular relation thereto. The back panel 13 is joined to the seat portion 10 by means of an arcuate section 14. The back portion 13 is concave as at 15 from a point slightly above the center line of the back panel to the top thereof. The concavity 15 is formed on a vertical axis.
The back portion 13 is convex as at 16 with the convex area 16 formed about a horizontal axis at right angles to the axis of the concave portion 15. The seat panel 10 has an isosceles trapezoidal configuration having the widest portion at its front edge. The back panel 13 is provided with outwardly and upwardly diverging side edges 17 and the upper portion of the side edges 17 converge inwardly as at 18.
A handle opening 19 extends transversely of the back panel 13 slightly below the center of the panel 13.
The seat panel 10 is provided with a multiplicity of integrally formed depending attachment platforms 20.
"ice
Each front corner of the seat panel 10 is provided with three platforms 20 and the rear portion of the seat panel 10 is provided with a pair of platforms 20 at each corner thereof. The platforms 20 comprise a molded body portion 21 having a central vertically extending threaded bore 22 therein adapted to receive a fastener (not shown).
The peripheral edge of the seat panel 10 is provided with a downwardly extending flange 23 integrally formed with the panel 10. The back panel 13 has a rearwardly directed flange 24 formed integrally on the peripheral edges 17 and 18 thereof.
It should be noted that the flanges 23 and 24 are continuous and at the point of joining of the back panel 13 and the seat panel 10, the flanges become somewhat heavier as at 25.
The instant invention is formed from fiberglass material in the preferred embodiment thereof and is resilient while at the same time having a great residual strength. The flanges 23, 24 and 25 add considerably to the strength of the combined seat and back, and it should be noted that the provision of the multiplicity of the platforms 20 permit the application of the combined seat and back to many different patterns of supporting bases.
The use of moldable material such as fiberglass or other readily formable material permits great residual strength to be built into the device without sacrificing desirable resiliency. Furthermore, the device may be suitably pre-colored by adding coloring pigments to the material prior to molding.
Having thus described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that numerous changes may be resorted to without departing from the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A combined seat and back panel comprising a shallow concave seat panel, a back panel convex in vertical crosssection and concave in horizontal cross-section, said back panel having its lower end portion integrally secured to the rear end portion of said seat panel, said back panel having side edges diverging upwardly and outwardly from the juncture of said back panel with said seat panel, said seat panel having side edges diverging forwardly and outwardly from the juncture of said seat panel with said back panel, whereby the juncture portions of said back panel and said seat panel have a width less than the remaining portions of said back panel and said seat panel, a continuous flange integrally joined to the peripheral edges of said back panel and said seat panel and extending perpendicularly rearwardly from the plane of said back panel and perpendicularly downwardly from the plane of said seat panel, said flange having the maximum width thereof at the juncture of said back and seat panels and respectively tapering forwardly and upwardly therefrom, said flange reinforcing and strengthening said panels.
