This invention relates to slide fasteners and, more particularly, to a new and improved slider therefor which is so constructed and arranged as to eliminate the possibility of foreign materials from entering the slider and obstructing the closing or opening movement of the fastener.
It is the primary purpose of the present invention to provide a slider which will resist the catching of overlyingor adjacent folds, flaps or portions of garment materials adjacent the fastener closure and which, when and if such catching should inadvertently occur, may be readily freed or released simply by manual operation of the slider in retrograde or reverse direction.
Accordingly, it is the general object of the present invention to provide an improved slider having means arranged therewith which tend to make the slider catchresistant and if catching occurs readily-releasable.
It is a more specific object of the invention to provide an improved slider having a tiltable or rockable member carried thereby with deflecting means arranged with the tiltable member and in which the movement of the tiltable member is controlled by the pull or actuating member when the slider is moved to open and close the fastener.

There is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, a conventional type slide fastener consisting of a series of spacedapart interlocking fastener elements 2 attached to the opposed beaded edges of tapes or stringers 3. There is arranged on the fastener elements, the improved slider 4 of my invention for longitudinal movement therealong in opposite directions to open and close the fastener in a well-known manner. Such a slider consists generally of overlying spaced-apart upper and. lower wings 5 and 6, respectively, having inwardly extending guide flange portions 7 along their marginal edges and connected at one end thereof by a neck 8 so as to provide a substantially Y-shaped channel 19 between the wings into and through which the fastener elements pass when the slider is moved therealong for engaging and disengaging the same. The lower wing 6 preferably is larger than the upper wing 5 and has upwardly extending portions 6a arranged to either side of the neck portion 8 and a downwardly extending portion 6b arranged at the lower end thereof.
' According to the present invention, there is arranged on the upper wing 5, a longitudinally extending lug portion 9 having an elongated recess 10 arranged in either side thereof. The upper wall of each of these recesses is tapered outwardlyat either end thereof so as to provide camming surfaces 12and 13 adjacent each end of the larger than the lug portion 10. On the upper end of this plate-like portion 14 there is arranged a pair of inwardly and upwardly extending deflecting plow-like portions 16 with one adapted to be disposed to either side of the neck portion 8 of the slider directly opposite the two diverging portions of the Y-shaped channel 19 of the slider for a purpose hereinafter to be explained. These plow-like portions are slightly thicker than the body of the wing 5. her 14, there is arranged an inwardly and downwardly extending deflecting plow-like portion 17 which is adapted to be disposed at the lower end of the wing 5 at the converging end of the slider channel 19. This plow-like portion 17 also is slightly thicker than the thickness of the body portion of the wing 5. Centrally of this platelike member 14 and on the inner side thereof there is arranged integrally therewith, to either side of the elonthe upper end of the slider to either side of the neckr portion 8 thereof and that the plow-like portion 17 at the lower end of the plate-like member 14 will be disposed over the lower end of the slider and aids in preventing longitudinal displacement thereof relative to the slider body. Thus, it will be seen that this plate-like member is adapted for tiltable or rockable movement relative to the upper wing due to the V-shaped portions 18 which bear against the outer side of the slider wing 5. 7

On the lower end of this plate-like mem to either side of the lug portion 9 and not only serve to attach the pull member to the lug portion but also act to keep the plate-like member 14 in position on the slider body and cooperate therewith to rock this plate-like member in a manner and for a purpose presently to be described.
Having described the construction of my improved slider, it functions in the following manner. When the pull member is grasped to move the slide in a direction to interengage the fastener elements 2 and to close the fastener, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the trunnion portions 21 thereof are moved along the recesses 10 of the lug portion 9 toward the upper end of the slider body. As they approach the upper end, of the slider the trunnion portions engage the camming surfaces 12 on the upper Walls of the recesses, thereby rocking the plate-like member 14 about its fulcrum and moving the plow-like portions 16 inwardly. In such position, it will be seen that the distance a between these portions 16 and the upwardly extending portion 6a of the lower Wing 6 is slightly less than the height of the channel 19 of the slider and that the plow-like portions 16 are substantially in contact with the fastener elements as they pass into the diverging portions of the slider channel. Thus, it will be seen that these plowlike portions 16 tend to prevent any foreign materials from entering the slider channel. That is to say, these plow-like portions tend to guide foreign materials to one side thereby preventing them from entering the slider channel and to jam between the fastener elements and the inner walls of the slider wings in the slider channel. In the event any foreign material M gets caught between the plow-like portions 16 and the fastener elements 2, as shown in Fig. 6, all that is necessary to release the caught material is to reverse the direction of the slider by moving the pull member 20 in the opposite direction whereby the plate-like member 14 will rock and the plow-like portion 16 will move away from the fastener elements so as to release the caught material, as shown in Fig. 7.
When the slider is moved in a direction to open the fastener, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the pull member 20 is grasped and moved toward the lower end of the slider. As the trunnion portions 21 of the pull member approach the lower end of the lug portion 9, these trunnion portions will engage the camming surfaces 13 at the lower end of the lug portion thereby rocking the flat-like member about its fulcrum and moving the lower plow-like portion 17 inwardly. In such position, it will be seen as before that the distance b between the plow-like portion 17 and the lower extending portion 6b is slightly less than the height of the slider t channel 19 with this plow-like portion substantially in contact with the fastener elements 2 as they pass into the slider channel. This plow-like portion 17 also acts to prevent foreign materials from being dragged into the slider channel upon opening movement of the slider. It will be seen that these plow- like portions 16 and 17 at the respective upper and lower ends of the slider not only tend to guide foreign materials away from the channel entrances but also restrict the openings into the slider.

As a result of my invention, it will be seen that there is provided an improved slide fastener having a catch resistant and self-releasing means arranged therewith which. is inexpensive in its manufacture and assembly and of a simple construction and readily and conveniently operable.
While I have shown and described ,an' embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this embodiment is merely for the purpose of illustration and description, and that other forms may be devised within the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A slider for slide fasteners of the class described comprising a pair of spaced apart wings connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide substantially a Y- shaped channel therebetween, ta plate-like member superimposed on the outer side of one of said wings for tiltable movement in a direction longitudinally of said slider, means carried by said plate-like member at least at one end thereof which acts to deflect and prevent foreign materials from entering the slider channel, and means for moving said tiltable member;
2. A slider for slide fasteners, as defined in claim 1, including an elongated lug portion arranged on said wing and a pull member attached to said lug portion for longitudinal movement therealong, said pull member adapted to co-operate with said plate-like member to tilt the same from one position to another.
3. A slider for slide fasteners of the class described comprising a pair of spaced-apart wings connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide substantially a Y-shaped channel therebetween, a plate-like member superimposed on the outer side of said wing for tiltable movement in a direction longitudinally of said slider, said plate-like member having an elongated aperture arranged therein centrally thereof, an outwardly extending elongated lug portion arranged on said wing, said lug portion disposed in and extending outwardly through the aperture in said plate-like member, transversely extending bearing means arranged on the inner side of said platelike member which rests on the outer side of said wing, means carried by said plate-like member at the upper end thereof adjacent said neck portion which acts to deflect and prevent foreign materials from entering the slider channel at the upper end of the slider, and a pull member attached to said lug portion on the outer side of said plate-like member for longitudinal movement therealong, said pull member adapted to co-operate with the outer side of said plate-like member to tilt it about said bearing means when said pull member is moved from one end of said lug portion to the opposite end thereof.
4. A slider for slide fasteners, as defined in claim 3, including means carried by the plate-like member at the lower end thereof which acts to deflect and prevent foreign materials from entering the slider channel at the lower end of the slider.
5. A slider for slide fasteners of the class described comprising a pair of space-depart wings connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide substantially a Y-shaped channel therebetween, a plate-like member superimposed on the outer side of one of said wings and mounted thereon for tiltable movement relative thereto in a direction longitudinally of said slider, said plate-like -member having a relatively thick plow-like portion carried thereby at the upper end thereof which is disposed adjacent said neck portion and the entrance to said slider channel which acts to deflect and prevent foreign materials from entering said channel, a lug portion carried by said wing portion, and a pull member pivotally attached to said lug portion, said pull member adapted to cooperate with said plate-like member to tilt it from one position to another.
6. A slider for slide fasteners of the class described comprising a pair of spaced-apart wings connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide substantially a Y -shaped channel therebetween, a plate-like member superimposed on the outer side of one of said wings and mounted thereon for tiltable movement relative thereto in a direction longitudinally of said slider, said platelike member having a relatively thick plow-like portion carried thereby at the upper end thereof which is disposed adjacent said neck portion and the entrance to said slider channel which acts to deflect and prevent foreign materials from entering said channel, said platelike member having an elongated aperture arranged thercin centrally thereof, an outwardly extending elongated lug portion arranged on the outer side of said wing which is disposed in and extends outwardly through the aperture in said plate-like member, and a pull member attached to said lug portion on the side of said plate-like member for longitudinal movement therealong, said pull member adapted to co-operate with the outer side of said plate-like member to tilt it from one position to another.
7. A slider for slide fasteners, as defined in claim 6, including an inwardly extending plow-like portion arranged at the lower end of said plate-like member which is disposed over the lower end of the slider adjacent the entrance to the slider channel at that end of the slider.
8. A slider for slide fasteners of the class described comprising a pair of spaced-apart wings connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide substantially a Y-shaped channel therebetween, a plate-like member superimposed on the outer side of one of said wings, a transversely extending projecting bearing portion carried by said plate-like member centrally thereof which bears against the outer side of said wing whereby the plate-like member is tiltable relative to said wing, said plate-like member having a relatively thick plow-like portion carried thereby at the upper end thereof which is disposed adjacent said neck portion and the entrance to said slider channel which acts to deflect and prevent foreign materials from entering said channel, said plate-like member having an elongated aperture arranged therein centrally thereof, an outwardly extending elongated lug portion arranged on the outer side of said wing which is disposed in and extends outwardly through the aperture in said plate-like member, and a pull member attached to said lug portion on the side of said plate-like member for longitudinal movement therealong, said pull member adapted to cooperate with the outer side of said plate-like member to tilt it from one position to another.
9. A slider for slide fasteners, as defined in claim 8, including an inwardly extending plow-like portion arranged at the lower end of said plate-like member which is disposed over the lower end of the slider adjacent the entrance to the slider channel at that end of the slider.
10. A slider for slide fasteners, as defined in claim 8, wherein the pull member includes a pair of trunnion portions arranged at one end thereof which are disposed in recesses arranged in either side of the lug portion, and camming surfaces arranged on the upper walls of said recess adjacent each end thereof with which said trunnion portions co-operate to tilt said tiltable member about its bearing portion when said pull member is moved to either end of said lug portion.
