Description

J. BROCKLEY TOOL SHARPENER Sept. 3, 1957 Filed April 4, 1955 INVENTOR JAcob BRocKLEY ATTORNEYS United grates Patent "ice TOOL SHARPENER Jacob Brockley, Hampton, Va.
Application April 4, 1955, Serial No. 498,821)
2 Claims. (Cl. 51-205) This invention relates to honing means, and more particularly to an improved manually operated tool sharpener.
One of the primary objects of this invention is to provide a device of the type described that will render the sharpener easier to use and which will enable the user to sharpen objects disposed in areas which cannot be ordinarily reached by a conventional sharpener.
Another object is to provide a sharpener in which various grades of stones may be easily and quickly interchanged according to the demands of the instrument to be sharpened.
Another object of the invention is to provide a honing device of the type described which may be used for domestic purposes as well as in the fields of agriculture and industry.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a manually operated honing device which is non-complex in construction and assembly and which may be easily and economically manufactured.
Other and further objects and advantages of this invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the following specification when read in conjunction with the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a honing device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the horizontal plane of line 3-3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the reference numeral indicates, generally, a tool sharpener constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention. The honing tool is seen to comprise an elongated fluted substantially cylindrical handle member 12 having a plurality of longitudinally extending anti-slip ribs 14 formed in the periphery thereof which extend substantially parallel to its longitudinal axis. As is seen in the drawing, one end of the handle member is provided with a centrally positioned, inwardly tapering recess 16 therein, to serve a function to be described.
A hollow substantially triangular socket member 18 is provided having side walls 20 and 22, a base wall 24, and an end wall 26. A frusto-conical stud 28 integrally formed with the end wall 26 projects laterally away therefrom, the stud 28 being tapered from its inner end toward 2,804,732 Patented Sept. 3, 1957 the outer end thereof and being adapted for insertion within the above-mentioned recess 16.
The base wall 24 of the socket 18 has an outwardly extending integrally formed boss 30, and is provided with a transversely extending internally threaded aperture 32 therethrough adapted to receive a thumb screw 34. The socket 18 is adapted to receive one end of a Whetstone 36 having a triangular configuration and which is releasably secured therein by the thumb screw 34.
Wherever reference is made herein to the term honing in connection with the tool, it will be understood that this includes sharpening as well as honing.
Having described and illustrated one embodiment of this invention in detail, it will be understood that the same is ofiered merely by way of example, and that the invention is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A tool holding device for a tool having a substantially uniform cross-sectional configuration throughout its length, said device comprising a fluted handle member having a longitudinally extending frusto-conical recess formed therein and extending inwardly from an end thereof, a substantially hollow socket member, said socket member having an end wall extending across one end thereof, said end wall having a laterally outwardly extending frusto-conical stud integrally formed on the outer side of said end wall of said socket member and adapted to be frictionally engaged within said frusto-conical recess, said socket member having a set screw extending through a side thereof to releasably secure one end of said tool in said socket member.
2. A tool holding device for a tool having a substantially triangular configuration in cross-section and comprising an elongated substantially cylindrical handle member, said handle member having a plurality of elongated circumferentially spaced and axially extending flutes integrally formed therewith, said handle member having an inwardly tapering recess extending from an end thereof, a substantially hollow triangular socket member including a pair of side walls and a base wall, said socket member having an end wall extending across one end thereof and having an open end oppositely disposed with respect to said one end, said end wall having a frustoconical stud projecting laterally from a side thereof for insertion into said recess, said socket receiving through its said open end one end of said tool, and a thumb screw threaded through said base wall for engagement with said one end of said tool to releasably secure said tool in said socket member.
