LAMP-FIXTURE.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 280,441, dated July 3, 1883.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, DWIGHT W. BENNETT, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.

This improvement relates particularly to hanging lamps of the kind wherein a socalled harp or frame is employed to support the reservoir, and has connected to it the holder for the shade.

One feature of the improvement relates particularly to the support for the reservoir.

The improvement therefore consists in the combination, with a cast-metal harp or frame, of a stud adapted to receive the lamp-reservoir upon it, and cast with or into the said harp or frame, and a plate fitted to the said stud, and secured thereon by a projection on one entering a recess in the other.

Another feature of the improvement relates to the connection of the harp or frame and the shade-holder.

The improvement therefore further consists in the combination, with buttons having a swiveling connection relatively to the upper ends of the harp or frame, of slots in the shadeholder through which the buttons may pass, and over which they may afterward be turned to secure the parts together. Preferably inclined or wedge-like surfaces are provided 011 the shade-holder, so that the buttons may when turned thereon forcibly draw the harp or frame and shade-holder together.

The improvement also consists in the combination, with the hanger and pulleys for suspending-chains, of bearings for the journals of said pulleys, and wires secured by casting at the sides of said bearings, and bent over said 0 journalsto secure them in the bearings.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a lamp-fixture embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top view of a part of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the hanger. Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrative of a modification of certain parts, and Fig. 5 represents a detail perspective view on a larger scale, showing how the journals of the pulleys are held in their bearings.

A designates the harp or frame ofthe fixture. It is made of cast-iron or other metal.

B designates a stud adapted to receive upon it a lamp-reservoir having in the bottom a 5 5 socket of suitable size to fit upon it.

C designates a metal plate having a central opening, and adapted to be fitted over the stud B and support the bottom of a reservoir fitted on the stud. This plate is prevented from turning on the stud by means of a teat or teats,

At the upper ends of the harp or frame are buttons D, whose shanks have a swiveling connection with the same. They are preferably cast in their swivel-bearings by the use of parting-sand, which is subsequently removed.

E designates a shade-holder, which may be made of cast metal and provided with any suitable devices for securing a shade to it. In this shadeholder are slots 0, through which the buttons D,when properly turned, may pass. After these buttons are passed through the said slots they may be turned across the same to secure the harp or frame and shade-holder 7 5 together. On the upper side of the shadeholder, adjacent to the slots, are inclined or wedge-like surfaces (Z, by acting upon which the buttons may be made to draw and clamp the harp or frame and shade-holder together.

G designates a plate fitted to the upper side of a plate, F, and having arms or extensions, which at the outer ends are provided with bearings e for the journals of the pulleys H. The plate G is secured to the plate F by a bolt, 8 5 I, and the bearings e impinge on the shadeholder.

In Fig. 4, I have shown bearings e, which have cast into them wires f, which, after the insertion of the journals of the pulleys, may 0 be bent down over them, so as to retain them in place, as best shown in Fig. 5. The sus pending-chains,which are used in conjunction with these pulleys, maybe of any suitable kind, and can be attached to any suitable counter balance-weight after passing over the pulleys H of the hanger.

It will be seen that by my improvement I very materially eheapen the production of the lamp-fixturesand greatly improve them.

The shade-holder may be transported detached from the harp or frame, and connected IOO to the same, on the arrival of the parts at their I 3. The combination, with a harp or frame destination, by even a person having little or no mechanical skill.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with. a cast-metal harp or frame, of a stud east with or into the same and adaptedto receive the lamp-reservoir upon it, and a plate fitted to the stud and secured thereon by a projection on one entering a recess in the other, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with a harp or frame provided with buttons having a swiveling connection relatively thereto, of a shade-holder provided with slots through which the buttons may be passed and across which they may be turned, substantially as specified.
