To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DELBERT K. VVoonwARn, of Lordstown, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Easels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification;

This invention relates to easels for the use of artists; and the invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved easel, the same being partlyin section, and having the hinged extension of the shelf adjusted in position to support a picture suitably for being copied. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the hinged extension of the shelf. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, showing the sliding bracket for supporting the shelf. Fig. 4 shows an adjustable bracket for the same purpose; and Fig. 5. is a modified form of prop for the extension-shelf.

A indicates a two-legged frame, having a third leg, B, hinged thereto at the top and adapted to assist in supporting the frame A in an upright position. The legs A are provided with longitudinal slots 0, in which sliding adj ustable brackets or supports are to be arranged to hold the shelf D in any desired position. I prefer to form the supporting-brackets E with tongues e e, adapted to fit in the slots 0, the upper one, e, having a pin, 6", entering it behind the leg A, and the lower one, 0, having an obliquely-arranged pin, 6*, adapted to enter one of a series of perforations, in said leg. The bracket has a slot, e with which an adjustable guard, d, secured to the under side of the shelf near each end thereof, is adapted to engage to prevent the shelf from being displaced.

A modified form of adjustable support for the shelf consists of a pin, F, having a projection, d, to serve as a handle, and adapted"to be secured in a perforation in the leg by a peg.

This pin is provided with an offset, d and has ablock or lug, (1 secured thereto, to bear against the guard d. hen in proper position, the offset and lug will serve to hold the shelf in place.

The shelf D is provided at one end with an extension, G, connected thereto by ahinge, g,

which is adapted to be oscillated upon a pivot, g, and secured at the end by a 'pin and a series of perforations, 9 in the shelf. The object of this construction is to adapt the extension to be moved either horizontally or vertically, and it is to be supported by a prop, whichis adapted to engage with one of a series of notches, h, in the under surface of the extension.

As shown in Fig. 1, the prop H consists of a rod having its lower end adapted to slide along a guard, '9 which is attached to the left leg of the easel, and connected to a rod, 9 which is secured to the shelf D in such manner that when the shelf is adjusted in height the prop will likewise be adjusted to correspond to the altered position of the extension G. A simpler means of accomplishing the same result consists in supporting the prop H at its lower end by a pin, which is linked thereto, and a series of perforations in the leg A, for receiving the said pin, asshown in Fig. 5. When the prop is not in use it may be turned up along said leg A and secured by any suitable catch. The upper surface of the extension is provided with a back, h, and an adjustable slat, h between which and the back h the picture is to be placed to hold it in position for being copied. The upper edge of the sheet or frame of the picture to be copied may be sup ported by a hook, h", connected to a string, 71*, which is to be tied to a wire, 765, on the leg A.

J indicates a cross-bar, having aseries of notches, 1 therein, and provided with two slots, i, through which the bolts or clamps j are inserted and secured by thumb-nuts to hold the said cross-bar at any desired elevation on the frame A. The object of the notched crossbar is to serve as a support for the rest K and to prevent it from sliding sidewise. The rest is provided with a hook at one end, by which it may be kept from slipping down off the crossbar, and which also serves as a means for hanging it up when not in use. The under side of the cross-bar J is provided with hooks j, in which the rest K may be placed when not in use. Hooks 7c are also provided for hanging the rest upon, according to convenience. The shelf is provided with hooks I, for hanging wipers upon.

To assist in staying the easel, a cord, L, is

secured to the legs A, and hooked on one of a series of hooks, P, on the leg B. The back M of the frame A is made broad, to form a support for small pictures, when such are to be drawn or painted. The legs A are to be provided with foot-pieces m, by which the easel is to be held with the foot when adjusting the shelf up or down.

The leg B may be hinged to the top of the back M, instead of to the top of the easel, if desired. This change would render the easel lighter, and at the same time support the same more steadily.

What I claim is 1. The frame A, having the adjustable shelf D, and extension G, and prop H, substantially as shown and described.

2. The frame A, having the legs A slotted, in combination with the shelf having guards d, and the sliding adjustable bracketsE, constructed and arranged as shown and described.

3. The frame A andshelf D, having guards (I, combined with the extension G, and ad notched cross-bar J, having slots i, and the clamps arranged in said slots, substantially as. shown and described, and for the purpose set forth,

6. The rest K, having a hook at one end, combined with a support, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

7. The frame A, having'the adjustable shelf I), and foot-pieces m, by which it may be held while the shelf is being adjusted, substantially as shown and described.
