2,800,661 :Patented :July 30, 1957 2 My invention is directed to a construction of necktie which possesses supen'or'wearing qualities and includes means. for reinforcing the necktie for maintenance of the shape of the necktieover a long wearing life of the necktie superior to conventional necktie construction.

I construct the display'end of the necktie separate and apart from the neckband portion and the opposite terminating end of the necktie and subsequently connect the display-endof the necktie to the neckband portion. The display endof the necktie according to my invention is formed by an ornamental front and back portion which are interconnected at their opposite sides by inserts formed bymultiple folded longitudinally extending sections. These multiple folded longitudinal sections are 15 stitched along their edges to the front and back portions ofthe "necktie. The longitudinally extending multiple 1 folded inserts may be' arranged with their folds in echelon inwhich'event the frontpanel of the display portion of the necktie-is formed narrower than the rear panel of .thenecktie and the multiple folded inserts provide a step- -like formation at opposite borders of the front panel producing a most aesthetic and ornamental appearance. Where the front and rear panels of the necktie are of the same width the rnultiple folded inserts ateach side of the necktieprovide a third dimensional or depth effect to the displayportion of the necktie when viewed slightly in .-profile. In --both forms of my invention the multiple folds constitute strengthening ribs extending longitudirnally-at oppositesides of the front and rear panels of the -display-end-of the-necktie'and eliminate curling and dis- =tortion-of-the necktie, insuring a long wearing life While 1 maintaining a' fresh aesthetic appearance.

-Referring to the drawings in more detail, reference character 1' represents thedisplay portion of the necktie 'connected to the terminating end portion 2 through a neckband portionwhich is stitched together at 3. There -is-also a stitched connection 4 1 extending around the terminating end portionl for securing the lining 19 within-"the terminating end portion 2 of the necktie. There 40 .is a stitched-connection 5- extending diagonally of the necktie forsecuring the inserted'side web sections 6 and -Tbetweenthe front-and rear panels shown'at lA'and 1B aof-the display portion lof the necktie. The two inserted side websections-aresymmetrical with respect to the front :ipanel lA and the rear panel'l-B of the displayportion 1 of the necktie and are structurailythe same except that the inserted :side*-websection 6 is formedin-a left-hand arrangement while the inserted side web section 7 is formedina right-hand arrangement.

The front panel -1 A ofthe display portion 1 of the necktie-has the marginal edges thereof turned inwardly as represented-at 8 and 9. The rearpanel 1B of the display section-1 has the marginal edges thereof turned --inwardly -as represented at 10 and 11. The left-hand side Web-inserted section dhas inturned edges 12 and 14 extending longitudinally-of the-insert with stitched con- :nections made fast to the inturned edges 8 and 14 'of panels 1A and 1B andconcealed by the material of the front panel 1 and the material of the left-hand side Webinserte'd section 6. Similarly, the right-hand side webinserted-section '7 is provided with marginal inturned edges-15 and.16, which are stitched to the inturned edges 10 andll of rear panel 1B and concealed by the overlapping of the frontipanel IA and rear panel 1B with'the material of the right-hand side web-inserted section'7. A similarly concealed stitching is provided between the marginal edges 8 and 9 of the front panel 1A and the marginal edges 12 and 15 of the left and right side webinserted sections 6 and 7. r i

A lining 19 is secured in the terminating end portion 2 of the necktie as shown more clearly in Figs. 2, 6 and 7.

The marginal edges of the terminating end portion 1 of the necktie represented at 20 and 21 are connected through concealed threads with the inturned marginal edges 22 and 23 of the lining 19 as shown more clearly in Fig. 6. A rear loop 24 is sewed to the back of the rear panel 13 of the display portion of the necktie as shown in Fig. 2 for receiving the terminating end portion 2 of the necktie when the tie is in wearing position.

The third dimensional effect imparted to the necktie when viewing the necktie partially in profile insures an attractive and aesthetic appearance to the display portion of the necktie.

The principles of my invention may also be embodied in in the arrangement illustrated in Figs. 8-14. In Fig. 8 I have shown the necktie in extended position and viewed from the front; while in Fig. 9 I have shown the same necktie viewed from the rear. This form of necktie comprises a display portion 25 and a terminating end portion interconnected by the stitched connection 27. The display portion 25 includes a front panel 28 and a rear panel 29, where the front panel 28 is substantially narrower in width than the rear panel 29. The longitudinally extending marginal edges of the two panels 28 and 29 are interconnected by the left-hand side web section 30 and the right-hand inserted web section 31.

The front panel 28 has the marginal edges 32 and 33 thereof turned inwardly. The marginal edges of the left-hand and right-hand side web-inserted sections 30 and 31 are turned inwardly as represented at 36 and 37, and are connected by concealed threads with inturned marginal edges 34 and 35 of the rear panel 29. The left and right-hand side web-inserted sections 31 have a multiplicity of folds arranged in echelon. That is to say, the lefthand and right-hand side web-inserted sections progress outwardly step-by-step in opposite directions from the front panel 28 and connect with the rear panel 29. The aesthetic effect produced is that of a multiplicity of ornamental extending edges on opposite sides of the front panel 28. These multiple folds at each side of the front panel 28 give a third dimensional effect when the necktie is viewed partially in profile from either side thereof.

The front and rear panels 28 and 29 and the multiple folded left-hand and right-hand side inserted web sections 30 and 31 are stitched to the display section 25 of the necktie as represented at 38, viewed from the front of the necktie as in Fig. 8, and at 39 as viewed from the opposite side of the necktie as in Fig. 9.

The terminating end portion 26 of the necktie is provided with a lining 40 which is stitched to the terminating end portion of the necktie by a spirally arranged stitching 41. The terminating end of the necktie 26 has the marginal edges thereof turned inwardly as represented at 42 and 43 as shown more clearly in Fig. 13. The ends of the lining 40 are turned inwardly as represented at 44 and 45. These inturned edges are stitched in a manner which conceals the stitches and obscures the stitches from external view. A rear strap 46 is provided on the back of rear panel 29 for receiving the terminating end 26 of the necktie when the necktie is tied in a wearing position.

giving a third dimensional eflect. By forming the side web-inserted sections from ornamental fabrics in contrasting colors which harmonize with the material of the 4 front and rear panels a most aesthetic and attractive appearance is imparted to the necktie.

The side web-inserted sections 6 and 7 and 30 and 31 are preformed in the cloth sections before the cloth sections are inserted between the front and rear panels of the necktie. That is, the multiple folds or creases are pressed therein so that they retain their shape and reinforce the opposite edges of the front and rear panels. The folds are not intended to reverse themselves and accordingly may be creased very firmly into the multiple folds of the inserted sections. The inserted sections, while being freely expansible intermediate their opposite ends, are gathered at their opposite ends; that is the upper ends of the inserts 6 and 7 are attached to the display end of the necktie 1, at 5, while the lower ends thereof are secured at 6B and 7B as shown in Fig. 3.

In the case of the form of my invention shown in Figs. 8-14 the side web-inserted sections 30 and 31 are gathered and connected at their upper ends 30A and 31A at 38 and 39, whereas at their lower ends these inserts are gathered and connected at 30B and 3113. Thus, the side web inserts give a third dimensional effect when viewed in profile, commencing in a position adjacent the top of the display portion of the necktie to a position adjacent the terminating end of the display portion of the necktie. Each of the side web-inserted sections are expansible and to provide for the required third dimensional effect, I construct these inserted web sections of a width which is slightly less than the front panel of the necktie. That is to say, in the necktie of the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1-7, for a front panel 1A of a maximum lateral width of approximately 2 /2 the side web-inserted sections 6 and 7 have a maximum exposed width of 2%. In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 8-14, for a front panel 28, having a maximum width of approximately 1%" the side web-inserted section 30 and 31 have a maximum exposed width of 1 /2".

The diagonal stitching 5 in the forms of my invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is located in such a position that the stitching is concealed by the knot or loop of the tie when tied in a four-in-hand manner. Similarly, in the form of my invention shown in Figs. 8-14, the V-shaped stitching 38 and 39 is so located in the necktie that this stitching is concealed by the knot or loop of the necktie when the necktie is tied in a four-in-hand manner.

I have found the forms of my invention disclosed hereing highly practical and effective and although I have described my invention in certain preferred embodiments I realize that modifications may be made, and I desire that it be understood that no limitations upon my invention are intended other than may be imposed by the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:

1. A necktie comprising a front panel, a rear panel, a pair of side web multiple-folded sections, one of said sections being disposed between the marginal edge of the front panel and the adjacent marginal edge of the rear panel and the other of said sections being disposed between the opposite marginal edge of the front panel and the adjacent marginal edge of said rear panel, said sections being constituted by material separate from the front and rear panels, a stitched connection between the front peripheral edge of one side section and the adjacent peripheral edge of the front panel, another stitched connection between the rear peripheral edge of said last mentioned side section and the adjacent edge of said rear panel, another stitched connection between the front peripheral edge of the opposite side section and the aligned peripheral edge of the front panel and another stitched connection between the rear peripheral edge of said last mentioned side section and the aligned peripheral edge of said rear panel, the multiple folds of each of said sections being visible from opposite sides of said front panel.

2. A necktie as set forth in claim 1 in which the opposite ends of said side web multiple-folded sections are gathered and connected between said front and rear panels adjacent the opposite limiting ends of said side web sections.

3. A necktie as set forth in claim 1 in which both the front and rear panels are continuous display surfaces and wherein the side web multiple-folded sections each constitute continuous display surfaces intermediate the peripheral edges of the front and rear panels.

4. A necktie as set forth in claim 1 in which said side web multiple-folded sections each includes at least two folds one of which is directed inwardly between said panels and the other of which is directed outwardly beyond said panels for substantially equal distances.

5. A necktie as set forth in claim 1 in which the front panel has longitudinally extending rearwardly turned edges and wherein said rear panel has longitudinally extending forwardly turned edges and wherein said side web multiple-folded sections each has edge portions extending contiguous with the rearwardly and forwardly turned edges and wherein said stitched connections are located between the rearwardly and forwardly turned edges of said panels and the said edge portions of said side web multiple-folded sections and are concealed thereby.

6. A necktie as set forth in claim 1 in which said side web multiple folded sections each have a width less than the width of said front and rear panels.
