LIFTING JACK.
Patented June 26', 1883.
@MMP
Afforney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PLEASANT WITT, or ooNKLINc, TENNESSEE.
LlFTlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,000, dated June 26, 1883. Application tiled April 30, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PLEASANT WITT, of Conkling, in the county of Washington and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvementin lifting-jacks, the object being to provide a device of this character which shall combine cheapness and simplicity of construction and durability and efficiency in use.
- Vith these ends in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and com.- binations of parts, as will be hereinafter de scribed, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of aliftingjack embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a view there-v of in vertical section.
rlhe standard to which the operating parts of the device are secured may be of any desired and suitable construction. As herein vshown it consists of an upright, A, a foot, B,
and a brace, C. A metal arm, D, secured to the upright aforesaid by means of flanges E and a band, F, has a recess, G, formed in its inner face, said recess receiving the rack-bar H. The upper end of the rack-bar is held in place by means of a loop or bearing, I, while its lower end plays in a vertical sl ot, J ,formed near the bend of the arm vl). In the drawings the arm is shown to be composed of plates bolted together; but it may be made in one piece, if desired. A gravity-bail, K, fulcrumed on the said arm and provided with a l nife-edge, L, is arranged to engage with the teeth of the bar, to the lower end of whiehthe lifting-hook M is secured. The said bar is operated by means of a hand-lever, N, having a gravity-pawl, O, fulcruined in its outer end, and provided with a notch, I?, which receives the edge Q of the bearing It, the said edge constituting the fulcrum of the lever. The outer end of the gravity-pawl O aforesaid is sufficiently long and heavy to insure a ready and positive engagement between its inner end and the teeth of the rack-bar. The said bearing R consists of a curved plate, the ends of which are respectively bolted to opposite faces of the upper end of the upright A. That portion ofthe plate extending above the top of the upright is traversed by an opening, S, the outer end of which is lower than the inner end, which terminates at the edge O aforesaid. By virtue of this construction of the bearing the lever is allowed all thcplay required for it, while at no time is it carried beyond the range of the straps T, which guide it and prevent its lateral displacement.
The top of the upright may be cut away as sliown or not, it being` necessary only that it shall not interfere with the act-ion of the lever.
Staples U, placed on the si de of the upright. are designed to receive the lever when the arm is not mounted in its bearing, it being readily lifted therefrom for the purpose of re moval.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but that I hold Vmyself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a wagon-jack, the combination, with a standard provided with an upwardly-projecting arm, of a sliding rack-bar mounted in said arm, a gravitycatch pivoted to the arm and adapted to engage the rack-bar, and a hand-lever provided with a gravity -pawl, adapted to engage with and raise theraek-bar, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wagon-jaclgtlle combination, with a standard provided with an upwardlyeprojccting arm, of a sliding rack-bar mounted in said arm, a gravity-catch pivoted to the arm and adapted to engage the rack-bar, a removable hand-lever provided with a gravity-pawl, and a curved slotted plate secured to the upper end of the standard and serving as a fulcrum and side support for the hand-lever, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I .have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PLEASANT wITT.
