Description
July 16, 1957 I. SILVERMAN DRILL ATTACHMENT FOR MIXING PAINTS AND THE LIKE- Filed Jan. 28, 1955 JNVENTOR. SILVERMAN United States Patent DRILL ATTACHMENT FOR MIXING PAINTS AND THE LIKE Isaac Silverman, Bronx, N. Y.
Application January 28, 1955, Serial No. 484,623
1 Claim. (Cl. 259-134) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mixing devices for stirring or mixing paint and the like.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved drill attachment which will fit in the chuck of an ordinary hand electric drill and which will mix or stir the contents of a paint can or other container.
As a further object, the present invention proposes forming the attachment with an elongated shaft having a mixing blade removably secured to its lower end and an extension stem projecting below the mixing blade to space the blade away from the bottom of the container, the contents of which are being mixed.
Another object of the present invention proposes constructing the shaft of the attachment so that it will fit in any one of a number of drill chucks and forming the extension stem so that it will space the mixing blade a predetermined distance above the bottom of a container.
As a still further object, the present invention proposes constructing the attachment so that the mixing blade will normally be held a predetermined distance from the bottom of a container but also so such distance can be varied during the operation of the mixing blade.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. l is a side view of a full paint can partly broken away and of an electric hand drill with a drill attachment for mixing paint and the like constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the drill attachment with I the lower end broken away.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the lower end of the device with parts broken away and in section.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the lowermost blade or paddle.
Fig. 6 is a side view of the blade shown in Fig. 5 but with parts broken away.
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but illustrating a modification of the present invention.
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Figs. 4 and 7 but illustrating another modification.
Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating still another modification of the present invention.
The drill attachment, in accordance with the first form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, is designated generally by the reference numeral 15.
Drill attachment has an elongated shaft 16 with an upper end portion 17 adapted to fit in the chuck of an electric hand drill 18 or in a standing drill press (not shown). An axially disposed keyway or slot 19 extends substantially the full length of the shaft 16.

' The lower end 20 of shaft 16 has a shoulder 23' and the blade 21 rests on the shoulder and is secured to the shaft 16 by a set screw 13'. The lower end 20 of shaft 16 also contains an axial opening 23.
A second mixing blade 13 is provided. Blade 13 has a hub 12 with an axial opening 11 alignable with the axial opening in the lower end 20 of shaft 16. Mixing blade 13 also has four spaced bladesor vanes 10, 9, 8 and 7 with downturned portions 6. s f:
Extension stem 22 has a threaded upper end portion 30 of reduced diameter adapted to extend through the axial hub opening 11 of the second mixing blade 13 and removable to screw into the threaded axial opening 23 in the lower end 20 of the shaft 16. An extension cap 31 fits on the threaded lower end 31' of extension stem 22 and is adapted to rest on the bottom 32 of a container 33 inside of the container. The length of the extension cap 31 and stem 22 is such as to dispose the two mixing blades submerged in the paint or other contents 34 of the can or container 33. The extension stern and cap spaces the lower mixing blade 13 from the bottom 32 of the container 33 for rotation in the container with the downturned portions 6 of its blades 10, 9, 8 and 7 disposed to scrape material from the bottom of the can. The extension stem 22 has spaced openings 35 and the cap 31 has a set screw 35' adapted to fit openings 35. Thus the blades 13 and 21 may be raised or lowered by fixing the cap 31 on the extension stem at difierent heights.
The modification of the invention illustrated in Fig. 7 is characterized by the provision of a round shaft 36 in place of the grooved shaft 16 shown in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive. The mixing blade 37 and extension stem 38 are like those shown in the first six figures and described above;
The modification illustrated in Fig. 8 is characterized by the provision of a shaft 40 having an outwardly projecting axial key or extension 41 extending substantially the length of the shaft. The mixing blade 42 and extension stem 43 are like those described above and shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive.
The modification of the present invention illustrated in Fig. 9 is characterized by the provision of an elongated shaft 45 having a lower end 46 with an axial shaft opening 47. A mixing blade 48 has a hub 49 with an axial hub opening 50 alignable with the axial opening 47 in the lower end 46 of the shaft 45. The mixing blade 48 also has a plurality of blades or vanes 51 radiating from the hub 49.
An extension stem 52 is provided normally to hold the mixing blade 48 to the shaft 45. Extension stem 52 has a threaded lower end 53 and a headed upper end 54 with a smooth intermediate or upper end portion 55 between the two end portions. The smooth portion 55 of the stem 52 extends slidably and rotatably through the hub opening 50 and into the shaft opening 47. A bottom or lower end seat 56 at the lower end 46 of the shaft 45 adjacent the shaft opening 47 prevents the headed upper end 54 of extension stem 52 from coming out of the shaft opening 47.
An internally threaded stem end member or cap 57 screws on the threaded lower end 53 of extension stem 52 and a coil spring 58 encircles the stem 52. A set screw 57 holds the cap 57 in place on the stem 52. The
To fix the hub 49 of the mixing blade 48 to the shaft 45 atiall times, the hub 49 contains a keyway 61 and the shaft 45 has a like alignable keyway-62 both adapted to receive a single key63.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be'understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein 1.0
disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in theappended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I'claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent Apparatus for mixing paint and the like comprising a vertically disposed elongated shaft having an upper end adapted to fit into the chuck of electrically actuated-mechanism and having a lower end, a mixing blade secured to the lower end of said shaft and an extension stem projecting below the mixing blade to space said blade from the bottom of a paint container, the contents of which is being mixed, said stem having spaced transverse openings therethrough, said mixing blade having a hub removably secured to the shaft and a plurality of pitched vanes, an extension cap slidably mounted on the end of the extension stem, said cap having an opening in its wall adjacent the inner end thereof, and a set screw in the opening in said cap adapted to seat in one of said spaced openings in the stem for adjusting the distance of the blade from the bottom of the container, and a mixing and scraping blade secured to the bottom of said extension stem.
