' 1 Claim. 01. 240-108) The present invention relates to a lamp shade and more particularly to a decorative lamp shade for Christmas trees and the like.
The general object of the present invention is the provision of a lamp shade of the character described having one or more decorative translucent panels adapted to be illuminated by the light bulb inside the lamp shade.
Another important object of the present invention is the provision of a lamp shade of the character described which is easily taken apart and reassembled so that the decorative panels may be changed if desired.
Another important object of the present invention is the provision of a lamp shade of the character described which may be easily and quickly fitted to standard small size sockets and light bulbs such as those used for Christmas trees.
Another important object of the present invention is the provision of a lamp shade of the character described which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture on a mass basis.
The foregoing and other important objects of the present invention will become more apparent during the following disclosure and by referring to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lamp shade;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the exterior body frame;
Figure 3 is an elevation of the sheet forming the decorative panels, said sheet being shown in flat state;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the folded sheet;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the insert to hold the sheet of decorative panels in place within the body frame;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the sheet and insert being assembled;
Figure 7 is a perspective view showing how the sheet and insert are inserted within the body frame;
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the assembled lamp shade showing how it is attached to the socket;
Figure 9 is a partial cross-section of the lamp shade; and
Figure 10 is a longitudinal section of the lamp shade.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like elements throughout, the lamp shade is made essentially of three detachable parts namely, an external body frame 1, a sheet of translucent material 2, which constitutes the three decorative panels 3 of the lamp shade, and an insert frame 4 which serves to hold the panels 3 in proper position within the body 1.
The body 1 has preferably an equilateral triangular cross-section and has three side faces which are mutually inclined and are each provided with a window 5 of ogival shape. The frame 1 consists in cross-members 6 making an equilateral triangle lying in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body 1. Three upright members 7 extend from the apices of the triangle formed by the cross members 6 and are disposed at right angles lice to the plane of said triangle. The uprights 7 consist in a straight portion 8, which is common to two adjacent faces of the body 1, and in branch curved portions 9 defining the ogival form of the window 5. Therefore the body 1 has three straight portions 8 and six curved branch portions 9, the latter meeting together at their upper ends. A curved triangular-shaped web member 11 is disposed between each pair of adjacent curved branch portions 9 and is provided with an aperture 12. The web members 11 serve to give rigidity to the body 1 and also to connect to said body a sleeve member 13 of cylindrical shape which projects outwardly partly from the top end of the body 1 and projects within said body, as shown more particularly in Figure 2, and is provided at its lower inner end with a restricted opening 14 (Figure 9). The sleeve 13 is adapted to receive a socket A for a light bulb B. The socket A and light bulb B are of the type used for Christmas trees. The neck part of the light bulb B engages the edge of the bottom of the sleeve 13 so that the lamp shade is retained on the socket and light bulb through said sleeve 13.
The sheet of translucent material 2 is cut out to form three ogival decorative translucent panels 3 which are connected along their side edges (Figure 3). The decorative panels are preferably coloured so as to impart an attractive decorative effect when lighted by the bulb B. The sheet 2 is folded along the side edges of the panels 3 and is inserted from the bottom end of the body 1 into the same so that each panel will register with a window 5 of the body 1, the edges of the panels engaging the inside face of the marginal portions of the uprights 7 and cross members 6. The sheet is maintained in this position by means of an insert frame 4 which has substantially the shape of the body 1 but has smaller dimensions so as to fit inside the body 1 and contact the inner face of the sheet 2. More particularly, the inside frame 4 consists in three ogival frames 15 extending in planes making an angle of 60 with each other, and connected at their lower ends by cross members 16 which form an equilateral triangle extending in a plane at right angles to the planes of the three ogival frames 15. The three frames 15 have common sides 17, as clearly shown in Figure 5, the insert frame 4 is adapted to snugly fit within the body 1 so as to engage the inside faces of the panels 3 to hold them in proper position within their respective window 5.
The body 1 and insert frame 4, together with the sleeve 13, may be made of moulded plastic material. It is preferable that the outside of the body 1 is covered with a metal layer such as tin.
The lamp shade is assembled in the following manner: the frame 4 is inserted inside the body formed by the folded sheet 2 (Figure 6) and these two assembled elements are inserted through the bottom end of the body frame 1 (Figure 7).
The lamp shade is secured to the socket A by inserting said socket within the sleeve 13 and inserting the bulb B through the bottom open end of the lamp shade and screwing said bulb within the socket A.
In use, cooling air will circulate through the lamp shade from the bottom opening defined by the bottom part of the insert, upwardly around the bulb B and will be discharged through the apertures 12 made in the web 11.
It is understood that an inside bulb is by no means essential and my invention may be made without provision for it, particularly if it is to be hung as an attractive ornament elsewhere than in a Christmas tree.
While a preferred embodiment according to the present invention has been illustrated and described it is understood that various modifications may be resorted to 3 without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A larnp shade of the character described comprising a body frame having a triangular cross-section and three windows of ogival shape made in the side faces of said body frame, a translucent sheet cut out to form three ogival panels connected along their side edges and inserted within said body with the marginal portion of said ogival panels in contact with the edges of said Windows, and an insert frame engaged Within said body frame and contacting the inside face of said translucent sheet to hold the latter in position Within said body, said insert frame tightly and snugly fitting said sheet and body frame, said insert frame consisting in three ogival frames interconnected at their lower end by a triangular frame, said.
