Ciaims. (Cl. 155-482) Thisinvention relates to improvements in ready-made adjustable slip covers for upholsteredfurniture, and particularly to the arm portions of suchslip covers.

The construction of upholstered chairs and sofas has now become sufficiently standardized to provide a market for ready-made slip covers. To assure thatsuch slip covers fit snugly and smoothly however, it is necessary that they be adjustable to the varioussizes and styles of chairs differing with respect to their back rest dimensions, seat dimensions, arm dimensions, :andflcushion dimensions. The slip covers contemplated herein are concerned primarily with two of these variables, namely, arm widths and arm shapes.

It is among the objects of the invention to provide an adjustable slip cover for an upholstered chair having a seat, a back rest and an arm, the cover comprising a body portionincludihg a back rest portionhaving a lower edge and a seat panel having a front, side and rear edges, the rear edge being connected to the lower edgeof the back rest portion; an inner-and-upper arm engaging panel having a lower edge secured toa side edge of the seat panel, theinner-and-upper arm engaging panel having a curvilinear front edge adapted to outline inner and upper forward edges of the arm; and a front-and-outer arm engaging panel having an upper edge providing a curvilinear portion secured to a portion of the curvilinear front edge adapted to extend along an inner edge of the arm, and providing a substantially rectilinear portion secured to the remainder of the front edge of the inner-and-upper arm engaging panel adapted to extend along the upper front and upper outer portion of the arm.

The inner-and-upper arm engaging panel and the frontand-outer arm engaging panel are preferably provided with ends extending behind the back rest to be joined to similar extensions extending behind the other end of the backrest by suitable laces or the like. The lower edge of the front-and-outer arm engaging panel preferably has a depending pleated skirt secured thereto, permanently or detachably by suitable separable fasteners.

A more complete understanding of the invention will follow from a detailed description of the accompanying drawing wherein:

Fig. 1 is a front elevation of an upholstered chair provided with a slip cover contemplated by the present invention;

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the chair of Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is an elevation, partially in section, taken along line 33 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in plan depicting a portion of the chair of Fig. 1 with the arm portions of the slip cover in extended condition;

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary front elevation of the parts in the extended condition of Fig. 4;

Fig. 6 is a section taken along line 66 of Fig. 5; and

Fig. 7 is a plan View of portions of a blank prior to assembly.

A typical upholstered chair as depicted in the drawing, particularly Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, comprises a back 2,793,684 Patented Ma y 28, 1957 rest 10 having shoulders 12, a seat 14 receiving a cushion 16, arms 18,,and suitable legs, not shown. The slip cover 20 comprises a body portion including a back rest portion 22 having a lower edge 24 and lateral shoulder covering portions 26, and a seat panel 28, best shown in Fig. 4, havinga front edge 30, side edges 32 and a rear edge 34. The rear edge of the seat panel is sewed to the lower edge of the back rest portion in the usual fashion. The slip cover also provides an inner-and-upper arm engaging panel 36 having a lower edge 38 secured to the side edge 32 of the seatpanel, the inner-and-upper arm engaging panel also having a curvilinear front edge 40 adapted to outline the inner and upward forward edges of the arm or arms 18.

The slip cover also provides a front-and-outer arm engaging panel 4 2 having an upper edge 44 providing a curvilinear portion 46 secured to an adjacent portion of the curvilinear front edge 40 of the inner-and-upper arm engaging panel .36 adapted to extend along the inner edge of the arm, the upper edge of the frontandouter arm engaging panel also providing a substantially rectilinear portion 48 secured to the remaining part of the front edge of the inner-and-upper arm engaging panel, adapted to extend along the upper front and upper outer portion of the arm or arms 18.

As clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the seam between the inner-and-upper arm engaging panel and the front-and-outer arm engaging panel is provided with a welt 50 which continues along the rectilinear edge portion 48 to the rear of the backrest 10 as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

The inner-and-upper arm engaging panel 36 is provided with areducedextension 52 containing a grommet 54* adapted to receive a lacing 56 as shown in.Fig.3 by

which it is connected to a similar extension at the opposite endof thebackre'st; Tie tapes,hooks, snap fasteners,

or' othersuitable connectors may be substituted for. the laces andgromrnetsif desired.

The front-and-outer arm engaging panel is of sufficient length to extend completely along the side of the arm 13 and the side of the back rest 10 :and behind the back rest where its grommets 58 will receive suitable lacing elements 60 to join it to a similar extension from the opposite end of the back rest. It will be clear that these lacing elements 56 and 60 will be tightened sufficiently to produce a snug and smooth fit with respect to the arm and back rest portions involved. The upper edge 44 of the panel 42 may be additionally secured to the panel 36 along the upper outer edge of the arm by means of spiral pins 68 or the like, applied at suitable intervals.

The forward edge of the seat panel 28 and the lower edge of the front-and-outer arm engaging panel are shown in Fig. 5 :as separably joined to a depending pleated skirt 62 having a welted edge 64, by means of snap fasteners 65 or the like.

With reference to Fig. 7, it will be noted that the innerand-upper arm engaging panel is likewise provided with a curvilinear rear edge 66 whose curvature is selected to accommodate the greatest variety of arm conformations and sizes possible.

The great value of the slip cover thus described will be best appreciated by a brief summary of the manner in which it is installed. The back rest engaging portions and the seat panel :are applied from above until they engage the parts for which they are intended. They are adjusted to best advantage in accordance with known practice whereupon the portions with which the present invention is primarily concerned are adjusted. With reference to Fig. 4 of the drawing, the inner-and-upper :arm engaging panel Will be stretched to a position approximating that depicted in Fig. 4, whereupon it will .fold the front-and-outer arm engaging panel 42 from the extended position depicted in Fig. 5 about'the forward outer edge of the arm 18 and along the outer side thereof and then folding the grommeted end about the rear portion of the back rest whereupon it too will be secured to its counterpart by means of suitable lacing elements 60 received through the grommets 58.

Thus, with great simplicity, a very pleasing aspect, as depicted in Fig. 2, will be produced, providing a snug .and smooth fit for furniture having arms of widely vary- .ing styles and sizes.

It will be appreciated that when the front-and-outer arm engaging panel is folded back around the forward outer'edge of the arm 18, a fold of varying size and shape will be produced, providing :a third ply 68' of variable degree, depending upon the size and shape of the arm being covered, best depicted in Fig. 3.

Whereas only one form of the invention has been specifically illustrated and described, it will be recognized by those skilled in the art that the invention is widely applicable to a variety of situations. Accordingly, the invention should not be restricted to the form described beyond the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. An adjustable slip cover for an upholstered chair having a seat, a back rest and an arm, said cover comprising a body portion including a back rest portion having a lower edge and a seat panel having front, side and rear edges, said rear edge being connected to the lower edge of the back rest portion; an inner-and-upper arm engaging panel having :a lower edge secured to a side edge of said seat panel, said inner-and-upper arm engaging panel having a curvilinear front edge adapted to outline inner and upper forward edges of said arm and said inner-and-upper arm engaging panel having a reduced end extending behind said back rest; and a front-andouter arm engaging panel having an upper edge providing a curvilinear portion secured to a portion of said curvilinear front edge adapted to extend along an inner edge of said arm, and providing a substantially rectilinear portion secured to the remainder of said front edge of said inner-and-upper arm engaging panel adapted to extend along the upper front and upper outer portion of said arm.

An adjustable slip cover for an upholstered chair having a seat, a back rest and :an arm, said cover comprising a body portion including a back rest portion having a lower edge and a seat panel having front, side and rear edges, said rear edge being connected to the lower edge of the back rest portion; an inner-and-upper arm engaging panel having a lower edge secured to a side edge of said seat panel, said inner-and-upper arm engaging panel having a curvilinear front edge adapted to outline inner and upper forward edges of said arm; and a unitary front-and-outer arm engaging panel adapted to cover the front and outer surfaces of said arm, said unitary panel having an upper edge providing a curvilinear portion secured to a portion of said curvilinear front edge .adapted to extend along an inner edge of said arm, and providing a substantially rectilinear portion secured to the remainder of said front edge of said inner-and-upper varm engaging panel adapted to extend along the upper front and upper outer portion of said arm.

3. vAn'adjustable slip cover as set forth in claim 2 wherein said front-andouter arm engaging panel has an end extending behind said back rest.

4-. An adjustable slip cover as set forth in claim 2 .wherein said front-and-outer' arm'engaging panel-has a lower edge secured to a depending pleated skirt.

5. An adjustable slip cover as set forth in claim 4 wherein said skirt is detachably secured to said front- .and-outer arm engaging panel.
