G A. GAGE.
GAR COUPLING.
No. 279,332. Pa'pented June 12.1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. CAGE, OF MINEOLA, TEXAS.
@CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,332, datedJ'une 12, 1883.
Application filed October 30, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. CAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mineola, in the county of Wood and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Coupling Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to car-couplers, the object being to provide a coupler with a coupling-pin of improved construction, and to combine said pin with effective and durable devices for raising and lowering it.
' The invention consists in the combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim. a
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a coupler provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 represents the coupling-link detached.
A represents a. portion of an. end of a car,
and B is the draw-head, provided with an extension, 0, the latter being longitudinally grooved to receive a spring, D, and an extension of a sliding block, E, the latter being adapted to enter the draw-head. The spring D bears against the block.
F represents a vertical rod supported in guides f on the end of the car, and having a looped right-angular arm, F.
G represents a lever pivoted at one end to the end of the car, and formed with a loop, g, to surround the arm F, and terminating in'a handle, 9.
a loop, This loop is adapted to be inserted through the looped end of the arm F of the rod F, and secured by a cross-pin, 71, or other equivalent means. The pin H passes through an opening in the draw-head, and is adapted to fall into the link when the block E is forced back by the thrust of the link.
I represents the couplinglink, formed with square ends,.12, to adapt it to squarely strike the block E.
The pin H may be readily removed when desired, and is capable of slight movement in the loop of the arm F.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a vertical rod secured by keepers to the end of a car, and provided with a looped end, F, of a coupling-pin having a loop at its upper end adapted to project through the loop of the arm F and be re' tained by a crossrpin, and a lever pivoted at l H represents a couplingpin provided with one end to the end of the car and looped to surround the arm F, and terminating in a handle, substantially as set forth.
I11 testimony whereof I affix-my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. CAGE.
