Description

April 30, 1957 L. J. GORGOL ET AL TRANSVERSE PIN TOOL HOLDER Filed Dec. 30, 1954 United States Patent TRANSVERSE PIN TOOL HOLDER Leonard J. Gorgol and Eugene M. Liberty, Indianapolis,
Ind., assignors to Western Electric (Ioinpany, Incorporated, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application December 39, 1954, Serial No. 478,598
Claims. (Cl. 27997) This invention relates to tool holders, and more particularly to devices for holding taps.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved device of simple construction for holding a tap.
Another object of this invention is to provide a tap driver having a replaceable key for holding a tap for rotation into apertured Work to be tapped.
One embodiment of the invention may include a slotted tap driver for holding and driving a tap having a square tang and a cylindrical shank, the shank being positioned and retained by friction in the slot in the tap driver with the square tang of the tap entering a notch in a replaceable rectangular key positioned in the slot of the tap driver to thus drive the tap by means of the replaceable key.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following detailed description and the accompanying drawings, illustrating a preferred embodiment, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device with a tap held therein by a replaceable key;
Fig. 2 is a section taken along lines 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken along line 33 of Fig. 1 and showing the key and tap in working position.
Referring now in detail to the drawings there is shown a tap 11 having a cylindrical shank 12 and a square tang 13 which the present invention is adapted to hold in a bifurcated tap holder or driver 15 to actuate it to tap holes in an article. The tap driver or holder 15 has a slot 16 dividing one end into two legs 18 and 19 which cooperate to hold by friction the shank 12 of the tap. 11 in corresponding axial grooves 21 and 22 on facing surfaces 23 and 24 of the legs 18 and 19.
Transverse grooves 26 and 27 of rectangular shape in the legs 18 and 19 cooperate to hold a notched or U- shaped rectangular key 29 between these legs on the end of the tap 11, a notch 30 in the key 29 being positioned to receive the tang 13 of the tap 11 to rotate it with the tap driver 15 to drive it into an aperture in a work piece.
In operating the device, the key 29 is placed in the transverse rectangular grooves 26 and 27 with the downwardly facing notch 30 of the key facing the corresponding axial grooves 21 and 22 in the legs 18 and 19 and the shank 12 of the tap 11 is frictionally forced into the axial grooves 21 and 22, the notch 39 in the key 29 receiving the square tang 13 of the tap 11 to rotate the tap with the tap driver or holder 15. The removable key 29 may be quickly replaced with a similar key when desired.
It is to be understood that the above-described arrangements are simply illustrative of the application of the principles of this invention. Manifestly other arrangements may be readily devised by those skilled in the art which will embody the principles of the invention and fall within the spirit and scope thereof.
What is claimed is:
l. A device for holding a tool comprising an elongated member having an axial recess for receiving a tool shank and a transverse opening intersecting the axial recess, and a replaceable key inserted into the said transverse opening and having a recess for engaging a tool placed in the said axial recess of the elongated member.
2. A tool holder comprising an elongated member having a pair of axially extended legs having cooperating recesses for holding a tool shank, a replaceable key having a depending opening, said legs having cooperating transverse slots for receiving the key so that its depending opening engages a tool inserted into the elongated member to drive it.
3. A tool holder comprising an elongated body having a pair of axially extended cooperating legs for holding a tool shank, said legs having a pair of juxtapositioned transverse grooves therein, and a notched key adapted to fit into the pair of transverse grooves, the notch in the key receiving the end of the shank of the tool to rotate the tool with the elongated body.
4. A device for holding a tool comprising an elongated member having an axial recess for receiving a tool shank, and a recessed key adapted to fit into the axial recess in the elongated member, the recess in the key receiving the end of the tool shank to rotate the tool with the elongated member.
5. A tool holder comprising a driver having a longitudinal slit forming a pair of resilient fingers for receiving and frictionally holding the shank of a tool, and a U- shaped key designed to extend transversely in the slit for receiving between the legs of the key an end portion of the shank having interlocking faces thereon for locking the tool against rotation in the driver.
