n m States PatentO 'SCRAPER-BLADE-SHARPENER Wilhelm Brink, Dayton, Ohio Application February 6, 1956, Serial No. 563,697 4 Claims. or. 76-82) This invention relates to scrapers for woodwork or the like and more particularly to a sharpener for the blades of such scrapers.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a scraper blade sharpener which will provide a perfect and sharp edge on the scraper blade with a minimum of effort.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a scraper blade sharpener of the above type which includes a sharpening edge which is adjustable and contains a plurality of sharpening edges which may alternately be rotated into operative position.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a scraper blade sharpener bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efiicient in operation.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention looking from the top thereof;
Fig. 2 is a bottom perspective view thereof looking from the same side as Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary rear perspective view thereof;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view shown alone of the tempered steel cutting tool forming a part of the invention.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, indicates a rectangular block of solid hardwood, metal or other suitable material having the beveled edges 11, substantially as illustrated.
The block 10 at one side on the undersurface thereof is provided with a longitudinally extending cutout portion 12 of V-shaped cross section (Fig. 4), the inner side of the cutout 12 lying in a substantially vertical plane at the center of the block. Positioned against this inner face of the cutout portion 12 is an elongated, rectangular plate 13 of brass, being suitably mounted thereat by means of the wood screws 14, the upper edge of the plate 13 being freely spaced below the apex of the cutout portion 12 (Fig. 4).
The side of the block 10 remote from the cutout portion 12 is formed with a transverse downwardly inclined bore 15 of triangular cross section and having its apex disposed lowermost, as shown in Fig. 3. As shown in Fig. 4, the bore 15 terminates just short of the other face of the block and the longitudinal axis thereof intersects the plane of the outer face of the cutout portion 12, with the lower edge or corner 16 of the bore 15 passing through the inner face of the cutout portion 12 below the apex thereof and slightly spaced above the upper edge of plate 13 for a purpose which will hereinafter become clear.
A tempered steel cutting tool 17 (Fig. 5) of triangular 2,790,339 PatentedApr. 30, 1957 .cross section is sl-idably positioned within the bore 15, being 'adjustably locked therewithin .by means of the countersunk set screw '18 screw threaded through the top. of the block 10 in vertical alignment with bore 15. The tool 17 {isprovided with the three .cutting edges 19, the l'owermost of which when the tool is positioned with- .in "the. bore 15 being in operative position in vertically spaced relationship to the upper end of the plate 13. By means of the set screw .18, the tool 17 may be re- -moved and rotated so as to bring a new cutting edge 19 into operative position, and its position may also be adjusted longitudinally Within the bore 15, in both cases 'to'c'ompensate for wear of the cutting edge.
The "lower edge of the tool 17 when positioned within bore 15 is disposed at substantially 18 degrees to the horizontal.
In operation, the edge of the scraper blade is checked to be sure that it is perfectly straight. After this is done, the blade is fixedly mounted by suitable means (as shown in phantom in Fig. 4) with the scraper blade edge uppermost. The sharpener is then grasped by means of the block 10 which serves as a convenient handle and with an even pressure it is pushed slowly twice over the blade shown in phantom lines in Figure 4, bringing the cutting edge 19 of the tool 17 across the edge at the indicated angle. The blade is then reversed, and the operation repeated on the other side. The space between the upper edge of the plate 13 and the cutting edge 19 of the tool is to accommodate the already sharpened edge of the scraper blade (Fig. 4).
It should now be apparent that there has been provided a scraper blade sharpener which will eliminate cut fingers while sharpening the blade and which will provide two perfectly sharp edges of the scraper blade, thus permitting the scraper blade to be employed for sur-facing cabinets or the like and in an efiicient manner. It would also be apparent that there has been provided a scraper blade sharpener of the above type which is easy to use, will provide a perfectly sharp pair of edges on the blade and wherein the sharpening tool is adjustable and may be rotated to bring a plurality of sharpening edges into operative position to compensate for wear.
The block 10 is one and five-eighth inches by two and a half inches by seven inches, while the tempered steel tool 17 is one and nine-sixteenth inches long and seven-sixteenth inches wide across each face. The brass plate 13 is one-sixteenth of an inch by fifteen-sixteenths of an inch by seven inches. The space between the plate 13 and the shar'pening steel is three-thirty-seconds of an inch.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new and what is desired to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A scraper-blade-sharpener comprising an elongated body member, said body member at one side on the bottom thereof having a cut out portion extending substantially the length thereof, said cut out portion being of substantially triangular cross section and having an inner face lying in a substantially vertical plane at the center of said body, said body at the side thereof remote from said out out portionhaving a transverse inclined bore extending downwardly toward the outer face thereof, said transverse bore being of angular cross section with a plurality of corners with one of said corners being disposed lowermost, said bore axis intersecting the plane of the outer face of said out out portion and having the lower corner thereof extending downwardly below the outer face and intersecting the same, a cutting tool of 3 angular cross section adapted to slide within said bore and having a plurality of cutting edges adapted to be alternately positioned within the lowermost corners of said borevbelow said outer face of said out out portion to compensate for wear, locking means for securing said tool within said transverse bore, and a metal plate secured to the inner (face of said cut out portion of said block and having an upper edge extending parallel to and freely spaced below the apex of said out out portion, 1
said upper edge being fir'eely spaced from the operative cutting edge of said tool when in position within said transverse bore whereby to accommodate the sharpened side of the scraper blade while the other side is being sharpened.

3. A scraper blade sharpener according to claim 2, said transverse bore being substantially equi-lateral trlangular in cross section, said tool having three equiangul-arly spaced cutting edges and being of the same cross section as said bore.
4. A scraper blade sharpener according to claim 3, the lower edge of said cutting tool within said bore being disposed at substantially 18 degrees to the horizontal when the inner face of said cutout portion is in a substantially vertical plane. I
