UNITED STATES GEORGE OUSTIS PYLE, OF DAYTON,
OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ALBERT M. SULLIVAN, OF SAME PLACE.
FEED-WATER REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,014, dated June 5,
Application filed March 22, will (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE O. PYLE, a resident of the city of Dayton, county of Montgomery, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved vFeed-I/Vater Regulator, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and efficient apparatus for regulating the feed-water supply of steam-boilers, whereby the level of the water may be maintained at nearly a uniform point at all times.
It consists in a supply pipe and valve combined with a waste-pipe and operated by a float, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of my regulator, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line' 00 a: of Fig. 1.
The case A is made in two parts tightly bolted together, so as to form a closed receptacle for the float, and is to be attached to the boiler on the water-level by short sections of pipeone at a from below the water-line andone at b from the steam-spaceso that the water shall stand at thesame level in the case as in the boiler.
At 0 on case A is the connection for the feed water pipe from the pump, communicating with a short pipe, (1, within the case, which in turn connects at one .end with a waste-pipe, e, passing out through the case, the other end of pipe (I terminating within the case and being closed by a check-valve, f. Between pipe d and the watse-pipe c is a cock, g, placed to turn on a horizontal axis, and with an aperture for connecting the pipes d e. The aperture is made the full width of the plug, so that a slight movement will cause a full opening.
B is a float ona hollow stem, 71, that is connected to the plug of cock the stem passing out through a stuffing-box in the side of the case, so as to serve as the axis for that end of the plug, while allowing atmospheric air vto e11- ter the float.
In the normal position of the float, with the water at the desired level, the cock g is in position to open communication between pipe 61 and waste-pipe 0, so that water forced in at pipe 6, instead of opening the check-valve f against the steam-pressure, passes out of the waste pipe to a tank or to the suction-pipe of the pump, as may be arranged. When the water-level falls the float, moving down, turns the cock, thereby cutting off the connectionto the waste-pipe,'and the feed-water, having no other outlet, forces open the check-valve and enters the case until the level is raised again. As but a slight movement of the float is required to effect the feed of water to the case, the level will remain nearly uniform at all times. The flow of water is to be regulated be foreor after it goes through the pump, or the steam for operating the pump may be regulated. Only a small continuous supply of water is required to pass to the supply-pipe of the case.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The feed-water regulator consisting of a supply-pipe provided with a check-valve, and a waste-cock operated by a float, combined with a closed case connected with the boiler, substantially as shown and described.
2. In feed-water regulators, the combination, with case A, of feed-water pipes c (1, check valve f, cock waste-pipe e, and float B, substantially as described, for operation as speoi fled.
GEORGE O. PYLE.
