W. H. FARRA.
CUTTER BAR FOR HARVESTERS. No. 278,922. Patented June 5,1883.
d' ac w N PETERS Pnm-mnb n hu. Washington. at;
UNITED STATES.
PATENT FFIcEa \VALTER H. FARRA, or MOUNT JACKSON, VA., ASSIGNOR or TWO-THIRDS TO MoneAN M. Moore AND CHARLES A. a. MOORE, OF SAME PLACE.
CUTTER-BAR FOR HARVESTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,922, dated June 5, 1883.
Application filed January 8, 1883. (No model.)
To all whozh it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. FARRA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Jackson, in the county of Shenandoah and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gutter-Bars for Harvesters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to cutter-bars for harvesters; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, by which the teeth may be easily and quickly detached for grinding or for other purposes, and again replaced, thus also enabling the cutter-bar to be easily repaired in case one or more of the teeth should break, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a plan view of a cutter-bar to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is arear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bar alone, the teeth having been detached. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of one of the teeth detached. Fig. 5 is aperspective view of one of the fastening-staples. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line a; w in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view on the line y y in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a plan view of a section of a cutter-bar, showing the teeth of a slightly different shape.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings represents the cutter-bar of a harvester, which is provided with transverse dovetailed recesses B B to receive the teeth, two such recesses being formed for each tooth. The sides of the recesses may be straight, parallel, as in Fig. 8, orone of their sides may be inclined, as shown in the rest of the figures, making the recesses wedge-shaped, so that they will hold the teeth more securely. The teeth 0 are formed with prongs or projections D, shaped to correspond with the recesses provided for their reception, and having dovetailed sides to fit the said recesses. The rear edges of the teeth and cutter-bar have notches E and E registering with perforations F and- F through saidteeth and cutter-bar, to receive the fasteningstaples G, which are ordinary metallic staples, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The legs of said staples H and I enter the notches E E and perforations F F,
respectively, and when driven into place they will hold the teeth securely. The legs H of the staples are so shaped or flattened as to fit nicely in the notches E and be flush with the rear edge of the cutter-bar, so as not to interfere with the free movement of the latter in its bearings. In order to prevent the staples from being lost or from dropping out, the legs H may be clinched upon the under side of the cutter-bar, as shown at J in Fig. 7 of the drawings. This, however, will not interfere with the ready removal of the staples when it is desired to remove the teeth, as the said leg H may be easily bent out of the notches E E and the staple withdrawn. This improved method of securing the teeth in the cutter-bar is exceedingly simple, convenient, and inexpensive, especially when the recesses B are wedgeshaped and the prongs D of the teeth shaped to correspond. The teeth may be easily adjusted, held firmly, and readily removed, as 7 5 they are not liable to bind.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The cutter-bar provided with recesses on the rear edge, and-the'perforaftions, in combi- 8o nation with the cutters provided with corresponding recesses and perforations, and the fastening-staples, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' 2. The combination of the cutter-bar hav- 8 5 ing transverse dovetailed recesses in its face, perforations F and notches E in its rear edge, the cutters or Y teeth 0, having dovetailed prongs or shanks D provided with perforations F and notches E, and the fastening-st-a- 0 ples G, having flattened rear legs, H, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. ROINEOK, J osnrrr EsTY.
