Application November 9, 1953, Serial No. 391,091
1 Claim. (Cl. 164124) This invention relates to improvements in puncturing devices, and more particularly to a novel puncturing device contained in a sanitary holder.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type which will enclose a plurality of puncture points in a sanitary container of convenient size.
The device is intended for use with a kit of supplies customarily provided for the nursing of newborn infants. A kit of this type includes one or more formula bottles and nipples. It has been found necessary to puncture the nipple an additional number of times to accommodate the very young infant. Nipples as provided are not sufliciently punctured and this has made it necessary for the nurse to find a puncturing implement and properly sterilize it, making necessary an inconvenient expenditure of time. The present device may be included with the nursing kit of supplies and will effect a saving of time as well as a safety factor in sanitation.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a puncturing device embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the device as used to puncture a nipple.
Fig. 3 is an exploded view in elevation of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral refers to the device generally, having a handle portion 11 provided at its inner end 12 with recess 13 forming an elongated socket for the retention of the cork 14 which may or may not have a shoulder as at 15.
The inner end 12 of the handle portion 11 is provided with an exterior thread which insertably engages and meshes with an internal thread at 16 of the hollow cap member 17 which latter provides a protective enclosure and guard for the needle 18 which in the preferred form is double-ended and reversible. The needle 18, after sterilization is inserted in the cork 14.
In use, the cap 17 is normally in place to protect the needle 18. The cap is removed and the needle is used to make a plurality of punctures as at 19 of the nipple 20.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A puncturing device for nursing bottle nipples including an elongated handle member having a cylindrical end bore therein, a thread externally disposed thereon, a shouldered cork disposed for the greater portion of its length within said bore, a double-pointed needle firmly gripped in said cork and projecting therefrom in general alignment with said handle member, and a sheath threadingly engaged on said handle to enclose the exposed portion of said needle.
