Description

R. YOUNG.
PLUTING IRON.
(Model.)
` No. 278,650. Patented May 29, `1188s.
.flttomey ROBERT `YOUNG, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
FLUTINGBIRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,650, dated May 29, 1883.
Application tiled October 17, 18S-2. (ModeL) To all whom 'it 'may concern.- l
Be it known that I, ROBERT YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing; at-Hartiord, in the county ot' Hartford and State Of Oonnecticut, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Findus-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view Oi my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of the saine; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of a portion ot' the bed-plate.
lhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tlutingirons, wherein a suitable bed-plate having flutes orcorrugations.
upon its upper surtace is intended tp be heated and used in conjunction withV a corresponding'- ly-shaped pressure-plate for the purpose of uting or ornamenting,` wearing-apparel and other articles of linen, cotton, or other fabric; and the invention consists in casting or otherwise manufacturing these two portions of the device in sucha manner that the said bedplate may be lifted from the stove or heater by the pressure-plate and conveyed to the iron ing-table or other desired place `without the 'use of any additional implement or utensil,
thereby giving the operator entire control of the heated portion of the ilntingiron, with no danger of burning the hands or dropping said heated portion when transferring it from the stove or heater, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the bed-plate of a ilutingdron, cast or otherwise formed with its upper or corrugated. face preferably of an oval or convex shape, and provided with lips et b upon one `or both its ends, as may be found most desirable.
The pressure-plate B is cast or otherwise formed ot' a shape to correspond with that of' the bed-plate A, and is provided with corru- 4.5 gations to engage with similar ones thereon, while its ends are tapered to fiorm ilangeso,
which engage with the lips ct b upon the end l upon a table'or other place without the use ot' 6o any other implement Or utensil.
Having now fully described my invention, what [claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l l. The bed-plateoil a Hating-iron, cast or 0th- 65 erwise formedwith lips upon either or both ends, in combination with a pressure-plate adapted to engage therewith, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The pressure-plate of a dating-iron, hav- 7o ing,r its ends tapered to form flanges, and adapted to engage with the bed-piece thereof, substantially as shown anddescribed.
3. The bed-plate A, provided with lips a b, in combination with thel pressure-plate, hav- 75 ing flanged end o, and handle C, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified. p
In testimony that I claim `the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in. thepresenee 8o of two'witnesses.
ROBERT YOUNG.
