6 Claims. (Cl. 5-36) This invention relates to an article of furniture which is useful as a seat and which is adapted to be converted into a bed. l
More particularly the invention is directed to an article of furniture such as an ottoman which is provided with a sectional frame structure adapted to be moved outwardly with reference to the ottoman to provide a bed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sectional frame structure which is adapted to support a mattress to form a bed, and which frame structure is foldable into coilapsed relation with reference to a frame support with the mattress folded between the sections so as to provide a support for a seat cushion to form an ottoman.
Another obiect of the invention is to provide a foldable sectional frame structure having one section mounted within the frame support and which is connected therewith for disposing the said section in alignment with the remaining sections to provide a bed and which is movable 'to a lowered position within the frame support with the folding of the remaining sections into collapsed relation for receiving a cushion on the uppermost section to provide a seat.
Still another object of the invention is to provide Van upstanding lheadboard when the foldable sectional frame structure is in bed forming relation and which is swingable to a position between the sections when the sections are in seat forming relation.

a 'l 2,185,416 EQ@ Eatented Mar. 19, 1957 Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the article of furniture includes a furniture frame 10 and a foldable or callapsible frame 11 consisting of a plurality of connected sections which are movable from an aligned formation for supporting a mattress so as to provide a bed to a collapsed folded condition within the furniture -frame to provide a support for a cushion so as to form an ottoman.
The furniture frame 10 consists of a rectangular-shaped frame in plan with which two of. the sections are connected, one for movement from elevated relation to a lowered relation within the contines of the said frame and the other for swinging movement from aposition outside of the furniture frame when the sections are in bed formation to a superposed inverted relation with the aforesaid section when the foldable frame is in collapsed condition.

The cross member 2i. is of angle iron construction and is arranged with the flange 23 thereof disposed vertically and secured to the inside faces of the rear flanges 22 of the frame members 14 and 15 adjacent the lower ends thereof.
The front and rear frame members i2 and i4 are connected together by side members 25 and 26. The side member 25a' is of angle iron construction and is arranged with the flange 27 thereof disposed horizontally and lowermost and with the flange 28 thereof disposed vertically and riveted or otherwise aiiixed to the outer faces of the side anges 2% and Si? of said frame members i2 and 11i at the lower ends thereof. The side member 26 consists 'of a flat bar which is riveted or otherwise axed to said side flanges 23 and 3f of the frame members 12 and .i4 at the upper ends thereof. Side members 3i. `and 32 corresponding to the side members 25 and 26 are riveted or otherwise affixed to the side fianges 33 and 34 of the frame members i3 and l5. The cro-ss members i6 and 21 are provided with caster rollers 35 and 36 which depend below the side members 25 and 31 for rollably supporting the furniture frame lli.
The foldable frame ll consists of four sections, namely, an inner end section 33, a short intermediate section 39, a reiatively long intermediate section di) and an outer end section 4i. The inner end section 33 is located wholly within the furniture frame lil and is connected therewith for movement from an elevated position to a lowered position `as hereinbefore described. For this purpose, the inner section 33 is Vsupported at each side by a pair of Vcrossed bars 42 and d3 which are pivotally connected intermediate their ends on pivot pins 44.
The bars 42 of said pairs of crossed bars are pivotallyv connected at their forward ends on pivot pins 45 with the vertical flanges 47 of the opposite side rails 4S and `49 of the .inner section 38 and at their lower ends the said bars have pin and slot connections 50 with the vertical flanges 28 and 5l of the side members 25 and 31 respectively of the furniture frame Eil. The bars 43 `of said pairs of crossed bars have pin and -slot connections 'S2 at `their forward ends 'with the vertical iianges 28 and `51 of the ` side members 25 and 31 respectively Iof the fur niture frame 10 and at their inner ends the said bars have pin and slot connections 53 with the vertical flanges 47 of the side rails 48 of the inner section 33. The slots of the pin and slot connections 52 are relatively shorter than the slots of the pin and slot connections 50 and 53. Links 55 are pivotally connected on pivot pins 56 to the bars 42 of said cross hars and are pivotally connected on pivot pins to the side liangcs 29 and 33 of the frame members 12 and 13 and said links prevent collapsing of the crossed bars and retain the inner section 38 in the upper position when the sections are in ood forming relation. Upon the collapsing of the foldable frame 1l to the collapsed position within the furniture frame 10, the said links permit of the lmovement of the crossed bars to a substantially liar relation and the inner section 38 to the lowered position as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Coil springs 5S are connected with the side rails 48 and 49 of the inner end section 38 and with the frame members 12 and t3 of the furniture frame lil and said springs are tensioned when the inner section is disposed in the lowered position and function to assist in elevating the inner section to the upper position.
The `short intermediate section 39 is pivotally connected to the inner end section 38 for movement from an aligned relation therewith when in bed forming condition to a substantially vertical relation when the sections are in collapsed relation with reference to the furniture frame 1li, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The said intermediate section includes oppositely disposed side rails 59 and 6% which are connected together by a cross bar 6l. disposed therehelow and having upwardly directed opposite ends which are riveted or otherwise aiixed Vto the under sides thereof. The side rails 59 and 66 are of angle iron construction and are pivotally connected to the inner end section 38 on pivot pins 62 engaging through the vertical flanges 63 thereof and through the vertical flanges 47 of the side rails 48 and 49 of the inner end section 58.
The relatively long intermediate section 40 is pivotally connected with the short intermediate section 39 and is also swingably connected with the furniture frame for movement from au aligned position with the remaining sections when in bed forming relation to an inverted relation when the sections are in collapsed con dition with reference to the furniture frame itl, as .shown in Fig. 4. The said intermediate section includes oppositely disposed side rails 65 and 66 which are connected together by an end rail 67. The said section is pivotally connected with the intermediate section 39 on pivot pins 68 extending through the vertical anges 69 of the side rails 65 and 66 of the intermediate section 40 and through the vertical flanges 63 of the side rails 59 and 60 of the intermediate section 39. Side arms 70 are riveted or otherwise aliixed to the inner ends of the vertical anges 69 of the side rails 65 and 66 of said intermediate section and said arms extend rearwardly and are pivotally connected at their inner ends on pivot pins 71 to the side flanges 29 and 33 of the frame members 12 and 13 of the furniture frame 1li. To accommodate the said arms, the inwardly directed flanges 19 of said frame members 12 and 13 are cut away at their upper ends as at 72.
The outer end section 41 is pivotally connected with the long intermediate section 40 for movement from aligned relation therewith, when in bed forming relation to a collapsed condition with reference to the furniture frame 10 to dispose said outer end section uppermost for supporting a cushion so as to serve as an ottoman seat. Thesaid outer end section includes oppositely disposed side rails 74 and 75 and end rails 76 and 77. The said side and en d rails are of angle iron construction and axed to `said end rails 77 are depending legs 78 having caster rollers 79 for supporting the outer end of the collapsible frame 11 when in extended bed forming relation. The said outer end section is arranged in narrowly spaced relau tion from the. outer end of .the intermediate .section 40 and is provided with depending side plates 82 which are riveted or otherwise affixed to the outer faces of the ver` tical anges 83 ot the side rails 74 and 75 thereof adjacent the inner end of the section. Angle members 84 underlie and are affixed to the side rails and 66 of the intermediate section 40 and have their forward ends pivotally connected to the said side plates 82 on pivot pins 85. Flat bars 86 are pivotally connected to the hat plates 82 on pivot pins 87 located below the pivotal connections S5 of the angle bars S4 with said plates. At their inner ends the said oars 86 have pin and slot connections 88 with the vertical flanges 69 of the side rails 65 and 66 of the intermediate section 40. Coil springs 90 are tensioned between brackets 91 and 92 pivoted to the side plates 82 and to the vertical iianges 69 of the side rails s and 66 of the intermediate section 4i). The springs 90 being tensioned when the sections are in extended bed forming relation function to assist in swinging the intermediate section 40 out of alignment with the outer end section 41 and into the upwardly extending relation shown in Fig. 3 when the outer section 41 is elevated to dispose the sections in collapsed relation with reference to the furniture frame 10. The outer section 41 is provided with adjustable depending lugs 94 which seat upon the inverted intermediate section 40 for supporting the outer end section intermediate the ends thereof when in collapsed relation. The rollers 79 of the legs 78 also rest upon the upper flange 17 of the cross member 16 for supporting the forward portion of the outer end section when in collapsed relation and the inner end thereof is supported at the rear of the furniture frame iii when in said collapsed condition on the cross member 20.
The inner end section 38 also includes an end rail 96 which is riveted or otherwise allixed to the opposite side rails 48 and 49 thereof and a fabric spring 97 of any desired construction is atixed at its edges to the inwardly directed flanges of the side and end rails of the inner section and of the intermediate sections 39 and 40 for supporting a mattress section S, shown in broken lines in Figs. 2 and 4. A fabric spring 98 of any desired construction is affixed at its edges to the inwardly directed flanges of the side and end rails of the outer end section 41 for supporting a mattress section R which is secured in position thereon and serves as a cushion when the sections are in collapsed relation as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
In order to prevent a pillow falling from thehead end of the foldable frame 11 when in bed forming re1ation, a head board is provided which is aflixed between side members 101 pivoted on pivot pins 102 to upright members 103 atlixed at their lower ends .to the side rails 48 and 49 of the inner end section 38. The head board 100 is disposed in upright relation when the foldable sections are in bed forming relation and is moved into a horizontal relation between the folded over portions of the mattress section S when the sections are in collapsed relation as shown in Fig. 4. For this purpose pivotally connected links 104 and 105 are arranged at each side with the outer ends of the links 104 pivoted on pivot pins 106 to the side members 101 and with the links pivoted on pivot pins 107 to the bars 43 of the pairs of crossed bars. Links 108 are pivoted at their v inner ends tothe uprights 103 on pivot pins 109 and which are alxed to the frame members 14 and 15 of the furniture frame 10. The spring latches 113 retain the inner end of the intermediate section 40 and the'inner end of the outer end section 41 in downward relation so as to retainthe mattress section S in doubled over relation between the inner end section 38v and the long intermediate section 40 when the sections are in collapsed relation.
Constructed in this manner, the foldable frame 11 is movable from the extended or bed forming relation shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings to the collapsed or folded relation shown in Fig. 4 to provide an ottoman seat. In the movement of the foldable frame to the collapsed relation, the outer end section 4l and the intermediate section 40 are elevated whereby the springs 90 function to swing the intermediate section 40 into up.- wardiy extending relation as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This functions to move the intermediate section 39 into upwardly extending relation and lowers the crossed legs to thereby lower the inner section 38 and swing the head board 100 from the vertical position to inclined relation. The outer end section 41 is then moved inwardly to dispose the intermediate section 40 in inverted relation and the inner section 38 in fully lowered relation with the intermediate section 39 in substantially vertical relation as shown in Fig. 4 ofthe drawings. ln this position, the outer end section 41 is supported on the furniture frame it) as hereinbefore described and the mattress section S is doubled over between the inner section 3S and the intermediate section 40 with the head board lud disposed in substantially horizontal relation between the folded over portions thereof.
What is claimed is:
l. In an article of furniture of the character described, a frame structure including corner members and side, front and rear members secured at their ends to said corner members to provide a rigid structure, a foldable frame consisting of an inner end section, a short intermediate section, a long intermediate section and an outer end section, pivotally connected crossed members connected at each side with said frame structure and with said inner end section for movement of said crossed members from an expanded upper position to a collapsed lowered position for supporting said inner end section in said upper and lowered positions, anrms aiixed to the inner end of said long intermediate section and pivotally connected to the front corner members of said frame structure for swinging movement of said long intermediate section from a position extending forwardly of said frame structure to a position in which said section is inverted and disposed above the inner end section, links pivotally connected to said frame structure and pivotally connected to corresponding members of said crossed members at opposite sides of the frame respectively for preventing collapsing movement of said pivotally connected crossed members when the sections are in bed forming relation, and means pivotally connecting said sections together in end to end relation for movement from aligned relation for supporting mattress sections to provide a bed to a collapsed folded relation in which said inner section is moved to said lowered position by the folding of said sections and said long intermediate section is moved to said inverted relation and the outer end section is disposed uppermost and above the inverted long intermediate section for supporting a cushion to provide a seat.

In an article of furniture of the character described, a frame structure including corner members and side, front and rear members secured at their ends to said corner members to provide a rigid structure, a foldable frame consisting of an inner end section, a short intermediate section, a long intermediate section and an outer end section, pivotally connected crossed members connected at each side with said frame structure and with said inner end section for movement of said crossed members from an expanded upper position to a collapsed lowered position for supporting said inner end section in said upper and lower positions, arms aixed to the inner end of said long intermediate section and pivotally con- ..Rtlted` to the ,front corner members of' said frame structure for swinging movement of said long intermediate section from a position extending forwardly of said frame structure to a position in which said section is inverted and disposed` above the inner end section, links pivotally connected to said frame structure and pivotally connected to corresponding members of said crossed members at opposite sides of the frame respectively for preventing collapsing movement of said pivotally connected crossed members when the sections are lin bed forming relation, means pivotally connecting said sections together in end to end relation for movement from aligned relationpfor supporting mattress sections to provide a bed to a collapsed folded relationy in which said inner section is moved to said lowered position by the folding of said sections and said longintermediate section is moved to said inverted relation and the outer end` section is dis posed` uppermost and above the inverted long intermediate section for supporting a cushion to provide a seat, a head board disposed above and extending across said frame structure adjacent the rear thereof when the sections of said` foldable frame are in said aligned relation, means pivotally connecting said head board to said inner end section, and pivotally connected links pivotally connected with said head board and with one of said crossed members for moving said head board from said position above said frame structure to an out-of-the-way position between the sections when said foldable frame is in` said collapsed folded relation.
3. In an article of furniture of the character described, a frame structure, a, foldable frame consisting of an inner end section, a short intermediate section pivoted to said inner end section, a long intermediate section pivoted to said shortintermediate section, and an outer end section, means pivotallyV connecting said outer end section to said long intermediate section including side plates aixed to said outer end` section adjacent the inner end thereof, rigid members underlying and aiixed to the outer end of said long intermediate section and extending under the adjacent end of said outer end section and pivotally connewcted` to said plates` and links. pivoted to said-plates and having pin and slot connections with said long intermediate section, leg members supporting the outer end of said outer end section, collapsible means arranged at opposite sides of `said inner end section and connected with said frame `structure and with said inner end section for movement thereof from an expanded upper position to a coliapsed lowered position for supporting said inner end section in said upper and lower positions, and arms rigidly connected with said long intermediate section and pivotally connected to said frame structure for swinging movement of said long intermediate section from a position extending forwardly of said frame structure to a position in which said section is inverted and disposed above the inner end section, and said sections being movable from aligned bed forming relation to a collapsed folded relation in which said inner section is moved to said lowered position and said outer end section is disposed uppermost and `above said intermediate sections for supporting a cushion to provide a seat.
4. In an article of furniture of the character described, a frame structure including corner members and side, front and rear members secured at their ends to said corner members to provide a rigid structure, a foldable frame consisting of an inner end section, a short intermediate section, a long intermediate section and an outer end section, pivotally connected crossed members connected at each slide with said frame structure and with said inner end section for movement of said crossed members from an expanded upper position to a collapsed lowered position for supporting said inner end section in said upper and lower positions, arms aiixed to the inner end of said long intermediate section and pivotally connected to the front corner members of said frame structure for swinging movement ewan-11e 7 of said long intermediate section from a position extending forwardly of said frame structure to a position in which said section is inverted and disposed above the inner end section, means swingably connected with said frame structure and said inner end section for preventing collapsing movement of said pivotally connected crossed members when the Isections are in bed forming relation, and means pivotally connecting said sections together in end to end relation for movement from aligned relation for supporting mattress sections to provide a bed to a collapsed folded relation in which said inner section is moved t0 said lowered position by the folding of said sections and said long intermediate section is moved to sa-id inverted relation and the outer end section is disposed uppermost Y and above the inverted long intermediate section for supporting a cushion to provide a seat.

In an article of furniture of the character described, a :rigid supporting frame structure, a foldable frame consisting of an inner end section, a short intermediate section, a long intermediate section and an outer end section, pivotally connected crossed members connected at each side with said frame structure and with said inner end section for movement of said crossed members from an expanded upper position to a collapsed lowered position for supporting said inner end section in said upper and lower positions, arms aixed to the inner end of said long intermediate section and pivotally connected to the forward end of said frame structure for swinging movement of said long intermediate section from a position extending forwardly of said frame structure to a position in which said section is inverted and disposed above the inner end section, means swingably connected with said frame structure and with said inner end section for preventing collapsing movement of said pivotally connected crossed members when the sections are in bed forming relation, and means pivotally connecting said sections together in end to end relation for movement from aligned relation for supporting mattress sections to provide a bed to a collapsed folded relation in which said inner section is moved to said lowered position by the folding of said sections and said long intermediate section is moved to said inverted relation and the outer end section is disposed uppei-most and above the inverted long intermediate section for supporting a cushion to provide a seat.
6. In an article of furniture of the character described, a rigid supporting frame structure, a foldable frame consisting of an inner end section, a short intermediate section, a long intermediate section and an outer end section, expan-sible and contractible means connected at each side with said frame structure yand with said inner end section for movement of said means from an expanded upper position -t'o a collapsed lower position for disposing said inner end section in upper and lower positions, arms affixed to the inner end of said long intermediate section and pivotally connected to the forward end of `said frame structure for swinging movement of said long intermediate section from a position extending forwardly of said frame structure to a position in which said section is inverted and disposed above the inner end section, means swingably connected with said frame structure and with Isaid inner end section for preventing collapsing movement of said expansible and contractible means when the sections are in bed forming relation, and means pivotally connecting said sections together in end to end relation for movement from aligned relation for supporting mattress sections to provide a bed to a collapsed folded relation in which said innen section is moved to said lowered position by the folding of said sections and said Ilong ntermediate section is moved to said inverted relation and the outer end section is disposed uppermost and above the inverted long intermediate section for supporting a cushion to provider a seat.
