HORSE-BLANKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,867, dated May 22, 1883.

To all whom 'i-t may concern:

Be it known that I, CALEB M. ANDREWS, of the city and countyof Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Blankets; and I hereby declare that the following is a full,

, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to theaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention has reference to an improvement in horse-blankets.

The object of the invention is to secure the blanket more firmly on the horse and prevent the loss or displacement of the blanket.

The invention consists in securing the surcingle to the blanket and to pad the space between the blanket and the surcingle, on each side of the backbone, so as to secure the blanket more firmly, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.

Figure 1 is a view of a horse-blanket having a surcingle firmly secured, so as to form a part of the blanket. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, showing the surcingle on the outside of the blanket and the padding on each side of the backbone. Q

I am aware thathorse-blankets have before this been provided with straps secured to the blanket, and also that pads have been secured to the under side of the cover. Such, however, differ from my improved horse-blanket, in that in my blanket, where the surcingle is sewed to the blanket, both are strengthened and every part of the blanketis held firmly by the surcingle, while by placing pads between the snrcingle and the blanket the blanket bears closely against the back of the horse and is not raised away from the back by the pads, as in the case where the pads are under the blanket.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a horse-blanket having a surcingle permanently secured thereto, and having pads interposed and secured between the surcingle and the blanket, as described.
