United States Patent O LIPSTICK CASE Thomas Joseph Cusack, Flushing, N. Y., assignor to The Virjune Manufacturing Company, Waterbury, Conn., a corporation of Connecticut Application August 14, 1953, Serial No. 374,257
1 Claim. (Cl. 20G-56) This invention relates to improvements in lipstick containers of the swivel type, having a lipstick cartridge so arranged as to be elevated or retracted by the manual rotation of the base ange of the inner casing.
In lipstick containers of the above nature, it is customary to provide -a cover cap for the container when it is not Ibeing used, so as to prevent the lipstick from coming in contact with exterior articles, such as those carried in a Aladys handbag.
Cnc object of the present invention is to provide a lipstick container of the above nature which will avoid the tendency for causing the lipstick to be jammed against the inside of the `cover cap when the base ange yof the inner casing is turned.
A further object is to provide a lipstick container of the above nature which is so constructed as to be smooth in operation, and which will allow the base flange to be turned in either direction with respect to the cap without elevating or retracting the lipstick when the cap is in closed position.
A further object is to provide a device of the above nature in which the lipstick carrier cannot be elevated Without first removing the cover cap from the container.
A further object is to provide means for holding the cover cap in closed position, consisting of a freely rotatable clutch band having nibs thereon Which serve to frictionally engage the inside of said cap, and in which said rotatable band is held in position yagainst the base ange of the inner casing by the inside shell of the conrainer which is locked on said casing with its lower edge in loose contact with said clutch band.
A further object is to provide a lipstick container of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very eiiicient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawings one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 represents a vertical cross-sectional view of a lipstick container embodying the present invention, with the cover cap shown in its normal closed position.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section, with the lower portion of the cover cap removed to show the appearance of the free turning clutch band.
Fig. 3 is a side View, partly in section, of the lipstick carrier cup.
Fig. 4 is a side view, partly in section, of the inside shell.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the spiral sleeve cam.
Fig. 6 is a side view of the inner casing of the lipstick container showing the base ange thereof, partly in section.
Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the free-rotating clutch band, showing the vertical nibs for frictionally engaging the inside surface of the bottom of the cover cap.
Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the sev- 2,777,572 Fatented Jan. 15, 1957 eral views, the numeral 9 indicates the outer cover cap of the lipstick container. VWithin the outer cap 9, provision is made of a cylindrical inside shell 10 which surrounds an inner casing 11 having an enlarged integral base flange 17 and a beaded upper end 26. The casing 11 is provided with a pair of vertical slots 2S, 29 having an inwardlyoiset friction bar 2'7 therebetween. The slot 29 has a laterally extending upper lsection 36 for a purpose to be ereinafter described.
Freely surrounding the inner casing 11 is a cylindrical spiral sleeve cam 12 with a suicient -clearance space 13 to permit rotation of the sleeve cam when the base ange 17 is manually turned.
Below the inside shell 10 is a clutch band 14 which is free to rotate around the inner casing 11. The clutch band 14 is provided with a plurality of elongated nibs 19 having a detachable frictional engagement with the inside of the cover cap 9.
Provision is also Ymade `of a lipstick carrier cup 20 having the usual lipstick-holding headed pin 15 yand a bottom air hole 16.
A locking nib 21 extends inwardly from the bottom of the inside shell 10 for engaging the spiral cam 12 to cause the latter to remain stationary with respect to said shell 10 when the inner casing 11 is turned by rotation of the base llange 17. y
The sleeve cam 12 is provided with a `spiral slot 23 and has a recess 24 in its 'bottom edge within which is located a depending tab 25-the latter serving to frictionally engage the inside shell 1t) `and prevent looseness of said sleeve cam 12.
One advantage -of the free rotating clutch band 14 is that when the base flange 17 is rotated with respect to the cover cap 9, the clutch band 14 will not rotate, and 'the inside of said cap will thus be prevented from wearing action 'by the lugs 19.
Operation in the operation of the present invention, the pin 15 will be embedded in the lipstick cartridge and the head of said pin, which is outside of the lipstick carrier cup 20, will project through the spiral slot 23 of the cam 12 `and the vertical slot 29 of the inner casing 11. Consequently, assuming the ycover cap 9 to be removed, when the iianged base 17 of the inner casing 11 is rotated while holding the inside shell 1t) station-ary, the carrier 20 will be caused to move either upwardly or downwardly to elevate or retract `the lipstick carrier cup 20 Within the casing 11.
The bead 26 on the ltop of the inner casing 11 serves to prevent upward movement of the spiral sleeve cam 12. Moreover, the lateral slot 30 `at the top of the vertical slot 29 serves as a seat in which the carrier pin 1-5 may rest after it has been elevated in said slot 29, and during the applicati-on of the lipstick cartridge to the face of the user.
The offsetting of the friction bar 27, inwardly, serves to keep the carrier 29 in -a vertical position with respect to the sides of the inner casing 11 and thus prevent tipping of the lipstick cartridge which might otherwise impinge upon the sides of the cover cap 9.
it will be understood that the inside shell 10 serves as a guide for the sleeve cam 12, land that the locking nib 21 will resiliently engage the surface of the inner casing 11.
The friction tab 25 at the bottom of the cam 12 serves to compensate for any looseness which may occur Iand also to give smooth action to the moving parts.
-it will be understood that the elongated nibs 19 of the clutch band 14 will have sutlicient height to form a friction lock with the cover cap 9 when the latter is in closed position, and that the bore of said cap 9 is sufficiently larger than the casting 11, so that in assembled position the cap may be turned freely without imparting any motion to the cam 11?..V it will be nnderstoodthat when the coverc'ap 9 is `in' assembledposition, it will not lieV in contact with the inner shell 10. rfhis is accomplished by making the rotary clutch band'liV slightlylarger in .diameter thanY the shell 10 lso that Vwhen the outer coverplcapk is in closed position, rotation of the base flange 17 of :the l inner casing 11 Will-notcause the lipstick to be elevated.
It will also be understood 4that. the clutch band 14 has suicient. clearance below the inside yshell l'and above the base flange 17 yto lallow for free turning of said band with a minimum offriction.
While there has been disclosed in this specication, 'one form -in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understoodV that this-.form is shown for-the purpose of illustrationonly, `andthatl lthe invention is not to be limited Vtov the rspecific disclosure, -but may be modified and ern- Vbodied in various other forms without departing from its l spirit. l In fshort, the `invention includes all Vthe modications ,and embodiments coming .wit-hin the scope of `the following Aclaim.
HavingV thus fully rdescribed `fthe invention, what is claimed yas new, and forwhich it is desired-to secure Letters Y Patent, is:
In aY lipstick container, the combination comprisingyan inner vcasing having a cylindrical guide portion `and an integral anged base portion, said cylindrical guide portion being Vprovided with a Vertical slot said base portion forming an annular seat Aat one end of said cylindrical guide portion the other end `of said guide portion being provided with an outwardly ared portion, a sleeve cam surrounding said guide portion and having a helical slotV therein, the end of said sleeve camV being in abutting engagement respectively Vwith said Iannular seat 'and saidV flared portion, an intermediate cylindrical shell surrounding said Vsleeve cam and in frictional engagementwith said sleeve cam for relative rotation therewith, a cylindrical lipstick carrier cup located'within said inner casing and having a guiding pin extending throughsaid vertical slot and said helical slot for moving said cup axially within said guide portion, a cylindrical clutch band loosely ,i mounted on said guide portion below and in axialregister with said intermediate shell the endsof said clutcjh lband loosely abutting respectivelysaidannu'l'ar -seatand one end of 'said intermediate'shell, fand a cylindrical outer cover cap lof greater inside vdiametertha-n the vouter diametervof Asaid intermediate shell and said clutch band, .said
clutch band having a plurality of elongated outwardly projecting, rounded nib-s for `frictiemally engaging the i11- side surface of said cover cap to avoid elevation of said lipstick into contact with the outside cover cap when the flanged base of said inner casing is rotated relative toV said outer cap when said capV is -in place.
