STILLMAN MOORE, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
TOP-PROP NUT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,596, dated May 15, 1883. Application filed July 18, 1882. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STILLMAN MooRE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Top- Prop Nuts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the nut, and of the two parts of which the nut is composed separated from each other. Fig. 3 is a side view of the larger part of the nut. Fig. 4 is an end view of the smaller part, and Fig. 5 is an edge view of the nut.
My invention relates to nuts for carriagetop props.
My object is'to' make an ornamental nut which shall be cheaper and more substantial than the nuts heretofore made for this purpose.
The improvementconsists in making the nut in two cast parts, one part having acircular flange and a circular recess, the other part having a beveled edge, and in setting the flange over the beveled edge placed in the recess to hold the two parts together.
A, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is the large or front part of the nut. its outside is rounded, has any desired ornamental figure or figures formed on it, and is cast of malleable iron. Its inside, C, Fig. 3, has the circular groove a, the circular flange b, and also the circular recess 0. The recess 0 is reamed out to make its bottom and the inside of the flange b smooth, and to allow the beveled edge of the part B of the nut to fit snugly in the-recess. The part Bis cast with the square part (I and with the circular beveled part or edge e. The beveled part 6 is turned to make its larger end fit snugly in the recess 0 in the part A. The part B is internally threaded, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To fasten the two parts A and B together, as shown in section in Fig. l, the bei'eled edge or part c is placed in the recess 0, and the flange bis set over the beveled edge e by a punch .or die arranged in a press or drop. The nuts are finished byjapanning, or in any other desired way.
I am Well aware that this kind of nut has I been made in two parts, with a nut proper and a metal disk, the parts connected together by stitched leather disks, and that various means have been adopted to hold leather coverings to this kind of nut; but \Nhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The top prop nut herein described, con sisting of the two parts A and B, the part A having the circular flange b and the circular recess 0, the part B having the square part (Z and the circular beveled edge e, the two parts fastened together by the flange I), set over the beveled edge e, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STILLMAN MOORE. Witnesses GEORGE TERRY, ARTHUR E. HOTOHKISS.
