United States Patent My invention relates to means for displaying flags on sidewalks, in yards and the like, and is designed as an improvement over the subject matterof my U. S. Patent,

The primary object of my invention is to provide simple and practical means for displaying a flag at full or half mast and means for anchoring the staff in the ground or the like.

The concrete block 23 is preferably round and as in my aforesaid patent is provided with a central vertical, laterally pronged anchor rod 27 having an upper end eye 29 in a concavity 31 in the upper end of the block and in which the hooked screw 21 is detachably inserted. A wing nut 33 on said screw 21 on top of the plate 13 provides for tightening said screw.

Leveling means for the base plate 13 comprises a pair of vertical screws 35 with lock nuts 37 thereon. The leveling screws 31 are located at one end of the base plate 13, on the opposite side of the socket 17 from the hooked screw 21 and opposite side of the longitudinal center of said plate and are engageable with the ground 25 Another object is to provide improved means-for suspending a flag on a flagstatf at full or half mast by a hem on the flag slidably mounting the flag on the staff for permanent attachment to the staff.

Still another object is to provide an improved base for the flagstaff on which the staff may be stood for storage or other purposes.

Still another object is to provide improved means for detachably anchoring the base to a concrete block adapted to be embedded in the ground or the like.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Referring now to the drawings by numerals, the flagstafl? 1, as in my previous patent, comprises upper and lower tubular sections 3, 5 detachably connected together by a pin 7 and an ornamental knob 9 is threaded on a threaded stud 11 extending upwardly out of the upper end of said stalf. The pin 7 is welded, as at 8, in the lower section 5 and the upper section 3 may be pulled off said pin to disassemble the flagstalf 1.

The base for the flagstaff 1 comprises an oblong, preferably oval metal base plate 13 with a rounded downturned edge flange 15 and a tubular metal socket 17 rising therefrom and in which the lower end of the fiagstalf 1 is removably inserted. The socket 17 is welded on the base plate 13, as at 19, in the longitudinal center of said plate and preferably to one side of the trans verse center of the plate.

The flag 39, as in my aforesaid patent, is provided with a hem 41 at its inner edge by means of which it is sleevedon the staff 1 and vertically slidably attached to the flagstafi 1.

The suspending means for the flag 39 comprises a tape 43 of a length to extend vertically through and out of the hem 41, preferably being slightly longer than said hem. The tape 43 is provided at upper and lower ends thereof with grommets 45, 47 adapted to be applied over the stud 11 when the knob 9 is removed and to be clamped against the upper end of the fiagstatf 1 by said knob when the knob is replaced. The hem 41 is stitched at its upper end, as at 59, to the tape 43 adjacent the upper end of the tape. By this arrangement, the tape 43 may be pulled out of the hem 41 from its point of attachment to said hem to reverse said tape end for end for a purpose presently explained.

Referring now to the operation of my invention, when it is desired to display the flag 39 at full mast, the grommet 45 at the upper end of the tape 43 is applied over the stud 11 so that said hem 41 is suspended by a short length of the tape 43 from said stud and the remainder of said tape hangs free through said hem, all as shown in Figure 1.

To display the flag 39 at half mast, the tape 43 is pulled out of the hem 41 to reverse it end for end and the grommet 47 is applied over the stud 11 in place of the grommet 45, whereby the hem 41 is suspended by a long length of the tape 32 and slides down the staff 1 to position said flag at half mast, as shown in Figure 2.

The base plate 13 may be detached from the concrete block 23 by loosening the hooked screw 21, and the screw 21 withdrawn into said plate together with the screw 35. Then, the stalf 1 may be rested on a floor or the base plate 13 for storage in upright position. As shown in Figure 8, the tape 43 may be detached from the stud 11 so that the hem 41 will slide down onto the lower section 5 of the fiagstafi 1 and be furled in said lower section and then, the upper section 3 of the fiagstafi 1 may be pulled loose from the pin 7 to shorten the shaft for storage.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scopestaff, a tape secured intermediate its transverse center and one end to said hem to provide long and short portions on said tape at opposite sides of its point of securement to said hem, and terminal means on said tape and the upper end of said staff for attaching the longand short portions of the tape to said upper end selectively to lower and raise the flag on the staff. p v

Means for displaying a flag comprising an upright flagstafi, a flag having a hem slidably sleeved onto said staff, a tape secured intermediate its transverse center and one end to said hem to provide long and short portions on said tape'at opposite sides of its point of secnrernent to said hem, and terminal means on said tape and the upper end of said staff for attaching the long and short portions of the tape to said upper end selectively to lower and raise the flag on the staff, said tape being reversible end for end for attachment to the means on the upper end of the staff.
