Description
Dec. 4., 1956' COOK TIMING INDICATOR TAPE Filed July 15, 1955 IHH I! ll IHI H HHI IIIHHI INVENTOR. EDWA2D o: COOK;
United States Patent TIMING INDICATOR TAPE Edward Donald Cook, Arroyo Grande, Calif.
Application July 15, 1955, Serial No. 522,280
1 Claim. (Cl. 116-424) This invention relates to marker tape, and more particularly to a pressure sealing adhesive tape provided with an index line rendering the tape especially suitable for use in the process of timing internal combustion engines, where a timing light is used to properly time the ignition system to the engine while the engine is in motion.
The main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved marker tape especially suitable for use in timing internal combustion engines, said tape being simple in construction, being easy to apply, and being provided with index means of high visibility.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved pressure-sensitive marker tape particularly suitable for use in providing an index mark on the balance wheel of the ignition system of an internal combustion engine for the purpose of properly timing the ignition system to the engine While the engine is in motion, the marker tape being arranged so that it is visible while the balance wheel is in motion when a proper stroboscopic timing light is employed, the marker tape being inexpensive to manufacture, and being easy to detach and apply to the rim of the balance wheel of the ignition system being timed.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claim, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a roll of pressuresensitive marking tape according to the present inven tion.
Figure 2 is a plan view of a section of tape taken from the roll of Figure 1, showing the index line thereon.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the balance wheel of an ignition system and illustrating the manner in which a piece of marker tape according to the present invention is applied to the rim of the wheel to provide an index mark for timing the rotation of the balance wheel. I
Referring to the drawings, 11 designates a roll of marker tape according to the present invention, said tape comprising a strip of suitable flexible material 12 provided on its bottom surface with a coating of pressuresensitive adhesive material 13 of a well known composition, for example, of a composition comprising small particles of rubber suspended in a suitable paste or semiliquid including hydrocarbon material, such compositions being Well known in the art.
The top surface of the strip 12 is darkened over its entire area, as shown at 14, except for a narrow area 15 extending longitudinally along the strip and located midway between and parallel to the side edges of the strip. For example, the top surface of the strip 12 may be dark blue, and the intermediate section 15 may comprise a white stripe located midway between the side edges or" the strip and extending for the entire length of said strip.
In using the marker tape, a small piece of tape, shown at 16 in Figure 6 is torn from the roll of tape 11 and is placed on the rim of the balance wheel or pulley 17 to be timed at the proper location of said rim with respect to the timing pointer 18 which is ordinarily mounted on the timing gear cover 19 of the engine ignition assembly. The timing adjustment is then made in the usual manner, by observing the location of the marker stripe 15 on the marker tape section 16 with respect to the pointer 18 while the engine is in motion.
By the use of the pressure-sensitive marker tape, visibility of the index mark on the rim of the balance wheel or pulley 17 is assured and it is not necessary to spend considerable time in locating the marker line and applying chalk or other Whitening material to said line in order to render the marker line visible. Thus, the marker line can be quickly established on the balance wheel or pulley 17 and the adjustment 'of the ignition system can be accomplished in a rapid and easy manner.
While a specific embodiment of an improved marker tape for use in timing automobile or other internal combustion engines has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In a rotary balance wheel for an internal combustion engine, a timing marker comprising a strip of tearable flexible material disposed transversely on the rim of the wheel, and a coating of pressure-sensitive adhesive material on the surface of the strip adjacent the rim of the wheel, the other surface of the strip being darkened over its entire area except for a narrow area spaced midway between and extending parallel to the side edges of the strip.
